Hollywood action films set in the Middle East cover a considerable portion of the present action genre. America’s thirst for glory has no bounds, and the way it uses such movies as a tool of hegemony is rather lucid if one is looking for it. Some of you might be wondering where I’m headed with this, but all I’m saying is that in all these movies, America becomes a beacon of hope, valor, sacrifice, and “worth” (pun intended if you remember how Captain America lifted Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Endgame). Anyway, coming back to the topic, here are five movies like Kandahar that you can watch. Although there are many, the list I’ve made is based on the first few names that came to mind that I’ve seen and liked. To make the list shorter, all these movies are based in the Middle East...

Kandahar reunites is director Rick Roman Waugh with Gerard Butler, after they made Angel Has Fallen and Greenland together. This time they tackle the spy thriller genre, with cast that includes Travis Fimmel, Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, and Bahador Foladi. With the script penned by Mitchell Lafortune, these particular types of stories often suffer from narrative sameness: westerner travels to the Middle East, things go boom, westerner saves the day, the end. This follows a predictable path.
The story begins in Iran with Tom Harris (Butler) with his partner Oliver (Tom Rhys Harries) working on wiring at a nuclear plant center. This cover is just to deposit a bomb. The two are surrounded by guards who become suspicious of their intentions, but Harris de-escalates the situation, and they manage to get away. His partner is worried that the army forces are onto them being CIA spies. Things are fine until...

After graduating from Waapa in 2011, Ben O’Toole played policeman Pete for three seasons of Love Child, had supporting roles in The Water Diviner and Hacksaw Ridge and co-starred in the Us movies Detroit and 12 Strong.

While most of us are more than aware that a certain amount of dramatic embellishment is to be expected from any adaptation based on real events, it is sometimes impossible to ignore to what level the truth can be stretched to accommodate those telling the story, and whether dramatisation for the sake of dramatisation can help or hinder said project.
In the case of Nicolai Fuglsig’s 12 Strong, where the truth ends and fiction begins isn’t altogether clear, nor does it seem that vital given the nature of the production itself. Having said that, if you’re prepared to be mildly incensed by its gung-ho “America saves the world again” narrative, the film presents an adequate retelling of a story which had until now remained under wraps by the powers that be.

Who is Chris Hemsworth when he isn’t Thor? Not an action star, as the excellent but financially disastrous “Blackhat” can attest; not a prestige-picture anchor either, as evidenced by the “Moby Dick” quasi-adaptation “In the Heart of the Sea.” The god of thunder comes closer to answering that question by trading in his hammer for a horse in “12 Strong,” which positions its star as a rather different kind of hero: an American soldier.

War films generally come in two varieties: a gray introspective look at its emotional and psychological cost and black and white jingoistic propaganda. The former is generally acclaimed as award worthy while the latter is dumped during winter months so its target audience of NRA-loving Republicans in American flag tees has something to watch during a drama-heavy, liberally slanted awards season. (I jest.) This doesn’t, however, inherently mean one route is “better” despite valid arguments to the contrary. And for those who vehemently disagree, it doesn’t mean the propagandized route is without any value. Films of this ilk are easy to be disregarded as two-dimensional, but a refusal to understand their value regardless is just plain lazy. Because while you may not “learn” anything, others find themselves healed.

Chicago – In the 16 years of the U.S. and Afghanistan war, which began a month after Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. has spent trillions of dollars and lost 2,400 soldiers. The story of that war’s first battle, “12 Strong,” would probably be more revelatory if we weren’t still there.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
To compare war films and their eras, the events depicted in the World War II film, “The Longest Day” (1962) took place 18 years before the movie, and it was about the decisive “D-Day” battle that helped to win that war. While “12 Strong” is a similarly dramatic war tale (and was classified until recently), it is just the beginning of a 16 year slog. If that had been the case for “The Longest Day,” and World War II was still going on, that film wouldn’t have the same feeling or impact. “12 Strong” suffers that fate because of the ongoing fighting in Afghanistan,...

With the start of a new movie year, the multiplex will present another entry in the genre that seems to have become a January tradition: the “inspired by true events” action thriller set in a recent military conflict. Although several had limited December releases in NY and La to qualify for Oscars, most had a “wide” release this month: Lone Survivor in 2014, American Sniper in 2015, and 13 Hours in 2016. Many have a “name” action star leading the charge, like Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper. This time it’s Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, prominent in the posters, looking determined while astride his black stallion. You heard that right, on horseback. So, in some ways this could be a modern wartime western. We just had a reboot of The Magnificent Seven, so this flick goes five better to tell the tale of a dozen fighting men , they’re definitely 12 Strong.

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at this week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues its hot streak at the box office, and with two soft contenders entering the ring this week, we don’t see why its reign won’t continue. There’s the based-on-a-true-story war flick 12 Strong and Gerard Butler’s Den of Thieves, neither of which is premiering with much fanfare. Is either of these worthy of the price of admission? Let’s see.

What we are excited about: The cast, no pun intended, is strong. Michael Shannon, Taylor Sheridan, Michael Pena, and William Fichtner are all great supporting actors. Combine the acting talent with a strong true story, and this has the potential to...

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer thinks big, and his war movies can range from noisy idiocy (Pearl Harbor) to near brilliant (Black Hawk Down). Luckily, 12 Strong sees the value in substance as well as spectacle. Based on Doug Stanton's 2009 bestseller, Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rod to Victory in Afghanistan, this rough-hewn drama has a compelling, mostly untold story to relate. After 9/11, an elite Special Forces unit comprised of 12 Green Berets led by Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), were dropped into Afghanistan in response to the attack.

Now in its 17th year, the war in Afghanistan is the longest armed conflict in U.S. history. The new military drama “12 Strong,” whose primary visual draw is U.S. troops on horseback shooting at the Taliban with machine guns, understands the reasons for that intractability. Helmed by Danish commercial director Nicolai Fuglsig, the Chris Hemsworth vehicle is is often hammy, but also wryly funny, breath-stoppingly tense, and uncommonly intelligent. Its January dump is a disservice to a promising debut feature. In almost any other situation, it would be inconceivable to think of the U.S. armed forces — the most formidable...

Until 1979, most of the modern world had never heard of Afghanistan as little more than a spot on a globe in the library. In that year, the Soviet Union sent special forces commandos in to raid the royal residence and kill the occupants, installing a puppet government. From that point forward, as a people and a place, they have rarely been Out of the news. To the British empire, Afghanistan was well known, but as Americans, we were ignorant of it. In fact, almost any country that has every tried to tame the Afghan territory has failed, and almost always after long, expensive, bloody campaigns. The lesson of futility was learned time and again.
Then, because of the Taliban, a product of soviet invasion and American intervention, acting as hosts of Al Qaeda, Afghanistan once again was put on the radar of the American people.

"Chances are we are not going to make it out of this one..." Warner Bros has debuted the second trailer for 12 Strong, formerly known as Horse Soldiers, about a Special Forces group sent into Afghanistan at the beginning of the war after 9/11. They end up working with a local Afghani warlord in order to take down the Taliban, riding horses into battle, which is why this was previously called Horse Soldiers, but of course. Chris Hemsworth stars, along with an ensemble cast including Taylor Sheridan, Michael Shannon, Austin Stowell, Michael Peña, Geoff Stults, and Elsa Pataky. This second trailer doesn't look any better than the first, with more action+explosions galore, patriotism everywhere, and lots and lots of guns. Here's the second trailer (+ original poster) for Nicolai Fuglsig's 12 Strong, directly from YouTube: You can also still watch the first official trailer for 12 Strong here, to see even more footage from this.

"There's no playbook here..." Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for their movie called 12 Strong, formerly known as Horse Soldiers. The full title (which explains the plot) is: 12 Strong: The Declassified True Story Of The Horse Soldiers. It's about a team of Special Forces soldiers sent into Afghanistan at the beginning of the war after 9/11. They end up working with a local Afghani warlord in order to take down the Taliban, riding horses into battle (like they used to do hundreds of years ago). Chris Hemsworth stars, along with an ensemble cast including Taylor Sheridan, Michael Shannon, Austin Stowell, Michael Peña, Geoff Stults, and Elsa Pataky. This looks like pretty much every other modern war movie, but with a twist, though it's still about good ole American soldiers risking their lives to keep the country safe & free. Here's the first official trailer for Nicolai Fuglsig's 12 Strong, originally embedded...

Deadline reports that actor, comedian, and Fox football mainstay Rob Riggle has been cast alongside Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon in Horse Soldiers, Nicolai Fuglsig’s upcoming film about American Special Forces infiltrating Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11. In a weird bit of military serendipity, Riggle will be playing Colonel Max Bowers, a man he once served under during his own time as a Marine in Afghanistan.
Riggle joins a cast that also includes Michael Pena, Austin Stowell, and Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film is based on Doug Stanton’s book about Special Forces secretly fighting on horseback against the Taliban in the days after the September 11 attacks.

If Rob Riggle had amassed a collection of comic roles over the past few years – from Sony’s Jump Street series to Dumb and Dumber To and everything in between – the actor is now beginning to transition to more dramatic fare.
And so, following roles in both A Happening of Monumental Proportions and Midnight Sun, Riggle has signed on for Horse Soldiers, an Afghan war drama in which he’ll play his former Army Colonel, Max Bowers. Per Deadline, Rob Riggle actually served under Bowers during his time in Afghanistan circa 2002, which no doubt ensures that the actor will bring first-hand knowledge and experience to the role. Doug Stanton’s nonfiction novel will serve as primary inspiration for Horse Soldiers, which documents the harrowing journey of an untrained captain who orders a team of U.S. Special Forces into a rugged, mountainous area of the Middle East in the weeks...

How’s this for a pairing? Nicolai Fuglsig has lined found two leads in Michael Shannon and Chris Hemsworth for his directorial debut, Deadline reports. Jerry Bruckheimer and Black Label Media will produce the film, which is titled Horse Soldiers. The team was tasked with joining forces with a local Warload to drive out the Taliban, an effort that proved much harder than anticipated. Bruckheimer stated his excitement over the project, saying “I am so happy that we’re finally getting this great project off the ground with wonderful leading actors, Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon. Michael Shannon and Chris Hemsworth have signed on to be Jerry Bruckheimer’s Horse Soldiers. Deadline reports that the pair will star together in the mega-producer’s upcoming film of that name, about the early days of the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan, when horse-riding U.S. operatives worked with native warlords to oust the Taliban from its control of the country. The film is based on a book about the soldiers’ exploits, written by Doug Stanton.
Horse Soldiers is being produced by Bruckheimer and Black Label Media, and directed by acclaimed Danish photojournalist Nicolai Fuglsig, a relative newcomer to the world of making films. Deadline has the scoop, noting that the Danish filmmaker – perhaps best known for his work as a photojournalist – will work in tandem with Black Label Media and screenwriters Peter Craig and Ted Tally in bringing the actioner to life. Rooted in post-9/11 Afghanistan, the feature film charts the trials and tribulations left facing a CIA crack team who plot course for the Middle East in a bid to dismantle the Taliban.

"Birdman" helmer Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Directors Guild of America's (DGA) award for best direction of a motion picture Saturday night, effectively firming up his film's march into the Oscars later this month. The Michael Keaton comedy also took top honors from both the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. With the DGA prize it joins films like "Argo," "The King's Speech," "Slumdog Millionaire," "No Country for Old Men," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Chicago," "American Beauty" and "Apollo 13" as the only films to pull off the hat trick. Only one of those, "Apollo 13," failed to win the Best Picture Oscar. So it's more or less settled, right? I confess, coming into the industry awards phase of the season, I didn't expect "Birdman" to dominate like this. And maybe that was ultimately its secret weapon. Everyone had their eyes on "Boyhood.

Tonight, the final major guild, The Directors Guild of America, announced their awards for 2014, giving their top prize to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for his brilliant direction of Birdman. This means that the film has won the “Triple Crown” (PGA, DGA, and SAG), making it an unstoppable force as we head into the Oscars.
No film since Apollo 13 has won all three of these awards and lost the Best Picture Oscar, but that film had failed to get a Best Director nod, showing that it wasn’t quite as strong with the Academy. Birdman, on the other hand, has nominations in every major category except Film Editing (which is probably due to the Editors’ Branch thinking that there wasn’t much editing there), so its path to the Oscars should be pretty smooth.
This completes what we could rightly call the “King’s Speech Coup,” named after the film that,...

Over two years ago, and indie thriller called Captive was in the works with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead as he was making his way back onto the big screen after ending his run as a governor. However, it appears another team member from The Expendables will step into the role instead. Variety has word that Bruce Willis, who ended up not returning for The Expendables 3, will take the lead role in the film about an American real estate magnate living in Brazil who is kidnapped and held inside of an armored truck for ransom, all while a detective (a role that has yet to be cast) specializing in ransom cases tries to find him. The script came from writer Benjamin van der Veen and a story by Nicolai Fuglsig and has Simon Brand on board to direct. Brand directed a thriller called Unknown in 2006, which also dealt with...
