It’s difficult to capture in just a few hours the depth of the influence Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson have cast over the industry through their legendary Motown catalog, but the 2023 MusiCares Dinner looked to do just that, celebrating one of the most prolific creative collaborations — and one of the most endearing friendships in the history of the industry — for the nonprofit’s annual event on Friday night just two days before the Grammys. Gordy, the founder of Motown Records, and Robinson, one of the label’s first signings...

"Something happened at the speakeasy." A trailer has arrived for an indie sci-fi thriller titled The Tangle, from actor / filmmaker Christopher Soren Kelly making his feature directorial debut. Described as a "lyrical new science-fiction film" and quotes in the trailer say it's "a chess game of a film" that's both ingenious and ambitious, a complex story intertwining sci-fi with meticulous filmmaking. The film is set in a future where microdrones have been invented, filling the air, the water, and our blood. "In this world, it is impossible to keep a secret anywhere but in your S.O.L. (the "Secure OnTangle Line"), a quantum encrypted hard drive implanted in your brain." The plot follows a murder investigation involving secret government agents and The Tangle creators and more. Starring Joshua Bitton, Christopher Soren Kelly, Jessica Graham, Nicole da Silva, Anil Kumar, Mary Jane Wells, and Bel Deliá. This looks cool, I'm curious to watch.

Title: Crazy Bitches Director: Jane Clark Starring: Samantha Colburn, Cathy DeBuono, Andy Gala, Liz McGeever, Victoria Profeta, Guinevere Turner, Nayo Wallace, Mary Jane Wells Can a movie be a tonal train wreck if its narrative never really leaves the station? And is there a baseline qualitative bar a project has to clear in order to qualify as either feminine empowerment or subversion? These and other ancillary questions nag at a viewer during ”Crazy Bitches,” written and directed by Jane Clark. After all, a title like that and a narrative slug-line that promises victims “killed by their own vanity” would seemingly augur some type of pleasantly wink- and nudge-filled genre romp. Alas, this [ Read More ]

“Each one of the girls dies a gruesome death, and the killer takes a trophy … things it turns out each girl was most stuck-up about.”
That’s the premise of this slasher horror-comedy with the pull-no-punches title of Crazy Bitches.
Written and directed by Jane Clark (who previously made the gritty, Lukas Haas drug drama Meth Head), the indie film is set for a debut at the Lgbt festivals Frameline (June 26) and OutFest (July 17).
The story tracks a reunion of former sorority sisters and their “one fab gay guy” friend as they head out for a getaway in a prototypical cabin in the woods.

Elena Undone opens with a hazy, slow motion shot of two women walking towards each other. A voiceover dreamily states “In love, one and one are ... one. Seldom do we get to experience the art in love.” It goes on to reference Emily Bronte and the scene reveals that we’ve actually been listening to a church sermon (a not-so-subtle transition to a stained glass window is our first hint).
From here, we meet Elena (Necar Zadegan), a beautiful, soft-spoken woman. She’s married to the preacher (Barry, played by Gary Weeks), and they’re trying for another child, a subject that Mr. Preacher seems much more keen on than Elena. She’s accosted by a cartoonish gaggle of churchgoers for not attending an anti-gay marriage protest, and she seeks comfort in the arms of Tyler (Sam Harris), a sort of love guru who makes films about “soulemetry” and stages...
