[The following story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of The Jinx — Part Two.]
In The Jinx — Part Two, John Lewin, the Los Angeles deputy district attorney investigating whether Robert Durst killed Susan Berman, recalls the moment he knew he might get a key witness to turn on his close friend.
Nick Chavin, who is described as the third member in the once-tight trio of Durst and Berman, is heard on a phone call in the HBO series where Lewin asks if he thinks his best friend Durst killed his other best friend Berman. “That’s one I’m not gonna answer,” Chavin answered.
“I did not know what Nick knew. But I thought that he had very damaging information, that he was conflicted about it and wasn’t ready to talk,” Lewin tells the filmmakers in Sunday’s second episode of Part Two, the follow-up to HBO’s shocking 2015 true-crime series.

Nearly ten year after the Emmy Award-winning first season, “The Jinx” is remarkably back on HBO. Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier’s engrossing docuseries about the string of murders connected to Robert Durst built to a now-infamous climax, and will return with more story to tell April 21.
Before that, it’s worth revisiting the 2015 series and decades of headlines it interrogates. “The Jinx” gripped its audience with mounting evidence against Durst and a scintillating narrative structure, but also quickly came under fire for manipulating the timeline and even Durst’s hot mic recordings for dramatic effect. In 2015, IndieWire’s Matt Brennan pointed out that “The Jinx” set an impossible standard for documentary drama — one that the series itself had arguably not cleared in the first place. Jessica Kiang wrote that “This is not Jarecki’s gotcha so much as it is a self-initiated, cloudily motivated performance piece of Durst’s,...

New York real estate developer the Durst Organization wants $48 million in unpaid rent and damages from Landmark Theatres’ now-closed Upper West Side Manhattan 57 West Theater. The company also claims that, since announcing its permanent closure last August, Landmark removed 700 seats along with light fixtures and ticket kiosks.
Durst continues to show the space to prospective tenants. Said spokesman Jordan Barowitz, “We are still showing the space — minus the stuff they stole.”
On July 7, Durst entered a request for summary judgment in its suit against Landmark holding company Silver Cinemas Acquisition. Summary judgment means a party to the case asks that the facts they claim be adjudicated without a trial.
Landmark announced it would permanently close the three-year-old theater after it couldn’t come to terms with Durst on renegotiating their 30-year lease. Landmark showed steady improvement in grosses after its 2017 opening, particularly after the prime Lincoln Plaza Theater closed late that year.

While Douglas Durst, the younger brother of alleged murderer Robert Durst, may have refused to cooperate with The Jinx, he admits that he is "very grateful" for the HBO miniseries since it resulted in the arrest of his brother. While watching episode five of HBO's documentary The Jinx, I was overcome with journalistic déjà vu. About a third of the way through the episode, I heard the voice of veteran NY1 correspondent Budd Mishkin reading words from a voice-over script I'd edited nearly five years ago. I instantly recognized it as a portion from a 2010 profile I'd produced about real-estate mogul Douglas Durst, back when I was the producer of NY1's interview series "One on 1 with Budd Mishkin." Minutes later, my jaw dropped when I saw a few seconds of footage that I'd edited for that same segment — Douglas speaking about his alleged-murderer brother. Apparently, it's the only extant news or documentary footage of Douglas talking about his brother. We'll get into the odd little story behind that footage in a second, but first, here's the entirety of Douglas's comments about Robert in that interview. (There's a...

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, HBO’s six-part documentary about the real estate heir suspected in two murders and the disappearance of his first wife, has been full of surprises in the first five chapters. Yet, none of them -- even the discovery of a letter that potentially links Durst to the death of longtime friend Susan Berman -- was more shocking than the final moments of Sunday night’s episode.
“What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course,” Durst said to himself during a private moment in the hotel bathroom following his final interview with director Andrew Jarecki. Not realizing his microphone was still on, the man was talking to himself, upset with being backed into a corner by the filmmaker.
"What a disaster," Durst also said at one point. Was this a confession?

It almost sounded like a confession.
At the end of Robert Durst's final interview for the HBO docuseries The Jinx, he headed into the bathroom while fully miked. Seemingly unaware that he was being recorded, he talked to himself. "You're caught," he mumbled. "You're right, of course. But, you can’t imagine. Arrest him."
"What the hell did I do?" he continued. "Killed them all, of course."
It's unclear whether this was a confession, but the FBI did arrest Durst on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans. (The FBI had been investigating Durst separately from the documentary, and there's no evidence...
