Technologists Todd Terrazas, Max Einhorn, Mike Gioia and Ian Eck have posed a challenge to nine up-and-coming filmmakers: create short films using generative AI in only 48 hours. The Cinema Synthetica filmmaking competition is the first of its kind, founded in hopes of demonstrating the potential of AI tools to influence the future of filmmaking.
The completion is part of the AI on the Lot conference, a one-day summit to be held next week in downtown Los Angeles where Hollywood creatives can collaborate with those at the forefront of artificial intelligence. The nine Cinema Synthetica participants were carefully selected for the challenge and then divided into teams of three. After two full days of work, the films will be presented at AI on the Lot on May 16 to a panel of judges that will include such industry insiders as Einhorn, Jeff Clanagan, Kathleen McCaffrey, Momo Wang, Rachel Joy Victor and Jackee Chang.

“Jersey Shore” star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is entering the true crime space with “Statute of Limitations,” TheWrap has exclusively learned.
Co-produced by FilmRise and Grinning Dog Entertainment, the series is described as a “light-hearted” take on the true crime genre. Hosted by Sorrentino, “Statute of Limitations” follows everyday people who have committed non-violent crimes where — title drop — the statute of limitations have passed, allowing them to speak openly about how they evaded the law. Watch the first trailer for the series above.
“This one-of-a-kind series features crimes openly discussed by people who ‘got away with it’ coupled together with series host Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino’s unique style of humor that brings a light heartedness to a normally dark genre,” FilmRise senior vice president of acquisitions and co-productions Max Einhorn said in a press release. “That combination along with Mike’s highly engaged global fan base will help deliver big audiences for the series.

New York-based film and TV studio and streaming network FilmRise has acquired North American distribution rights to true-crime documentary feature film “The Thief Collector.”
Directed by Emmy winner Allison Otto (“The Love Bugs”), the film follows one of the most audacious and puzzling art thefts of a generation. In 1985, Willem de Kooning’s seminal work, “Woman-Ochre,” was sliced from its frame and stolen off the walls of the University of Arizona Museum of Art, disappearing into the desert. Over 30 years later, in a remote town in New Mexico, the $160 million dollar painting was rediscovered in the unlikeliest of places – the home of an eccentric married couple, both schoolteachers, with a keen eye for great works but a very unconventional method of collecting them. The film features Glenn Howerton co-creator, director, writer and star of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

FilmRise didn’t get its reputation as one of the top distributors of free ad-supported streaming content by resting on its laurels. The company is making new additions all the time and has now acquired the exclusive rights to over 200 hours of content from National Black Television Media’s catalog.

“Young and the Restless” star Tracey Bregman has her Daytime Emmy back. The star’s original Emmy was destroyed in 2018 when she lost her house during Malibu’s Woolsey Fire. As she appeared Tuesday on CBS’ “The Talk,” Bregman was surprised with a replacement statue from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Bregman won her Emmy back in 1985 for the category that was then known as Outstanding Ingenue/Woman in a Drama Series. She appeared on “The Talk” to help celebrate her 40th anniversary on the show (which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year). Her on-screen husband, Christian Le Blanc, made a special appearance to surprise her with the new Emmy.
“It has been one of the most extraordinary and heartfelt experiences of my career,” Bregman said. “I tried not to go into the “ugly cry” in the air. Thanks to my ‘Young and Restless’ family, NATAS,...

The Netflix original series Hemlock Grove was a collaboration between the streaming service and producer/distributor Gaumont, and did not belong to Netflix in perpetuity – as evident from the fact that it was removed from the service last month. But if you were hoping to watch Hemlock Grove soon, we have good news for you: the independent free streaming network FilmRise had struck a deal with Gaumont to bring all three seasons (33 episodes) of the show to their service. Also part of the FilmRise and Gaumont deal is all three seasons (39 episodes) of the Thomas Harris-inspired series Hannibal!
Based on a novel by Brian McGreevy and executive produced by Eli Roth, Hemlock Grove follows the strange happenings in a fictional town in Pennsylvania. FilmRise has struck an exclusive deal with Japan’s Fuji Television Network for the iconic Japanese culinary competition series, “The Iron Chef.”
The New York-headquartered studio and streaming network made the deal with Fuji’s distribution arm, Fuji Creative Corporation. The pact, which spans 7 seasons, covers all SVOD and AVOD rights for domestic and international, and includes the FilmRise Streaming Network.
“Iron Chef” first launched on Fuji in 1993. No expense was spared, with chefs allowed seemingly limitless supplies of the most exotic, expensive gourmet ingredients.
The competition, hosted by Chairman Kaga, introduces a “secret ingredient” that the challenger and the chosen Iron Chef has to incorporate into every dish. Each chef presents his or her dishes to a panel of 3-4 judges who rate the dishes to crown a winner. All the competitions take place in a specially designed, atmospheric “kitchen stadium.”

“The potential loss of thousands of screens will only hasten the day when Hollywood doesn’t have to deal with those pesky exhibitors anymore.”
—Gary Susman, RollingStone.com, September 4th, 2013
Now on this third post, it’s become very clear to me that the digital conversion is old news. It was the talk of the industry before I became part of the business and even prior to my involvement with the Elks Theatre. And yet, we are likely one of hundreds of small town cinemas in the nation that didn’t get the memo early enough. And now we’re left behind.
Was this part of the plan?
Given the entire nature of the digital conversion combined with the choke-chain relationship studios have held on exhibitors, with no flexibility for even small venues, one can only wonder if independent cinemas are seen by Hollywood as an expendable part of their current business model.

Staying relevant. It is a fear actors, directors, content creators, and to be honest, most human beings grapple with constantly. The more than half-century year-old Sunset Boulevard exemplified this fear in the delusional Gloria Swanson. And while I’m sure this obsession is a random extraneous facet of the greatly evolved human consciousness, it may be spin-off on our desire to survive.
This wasn’t part of Birdman. This was Emma Stone actually telling Mk the truth.
“If you build it they will come.” While that may have been true at one time, many have since ‘built’ and the audience has been spread thinly. We see the loss of audience at the Elks Theatre weekly. And while the theater hasn’t changed, I understand audiences’ needs have. It’s clear there are more and more forms of entertainment available instantly, and cost and convenience is absolutely the apogee of necessity in the realm of entertainment.

I have accepted that cinema is an ever-evolving medium. But I never expected our heritage to be at stake. This post is not a podium for me to exclaim film is superior to digital, nor will I be stating the digital conversion (or DC) was a poor decision of the industry. As a society furthering itself in the Digital Revolution, the DC was the most obvious future for the way we exhibit motion pictures theatrically. But I never expected this:
“We have decided to suspend theater operations…”
As I wrote that line in a memo to our email subscribers, Facebook fans, and website visitors, I caught myself recalling the final illustration of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, where the tree, now a mere stump, has nothing left to give the old man but a place to sit.
Will we only appreciate our original movie houses once they’re gone?...
