The BBC have launched this year’s Comic Relief appeal, while Lenny Henry has also confirmed that he will step down as host.
Comic Relief launched in 1985 with a telethon that has since become embedded in British culture. Known as Red Nose Day, on account of the red noses sold as part of the appeal, over the years this has led to many classic comic moments, from The Young Ones singing Livin’ Doll with Cliff Richard, to Johnny Depp and Sting appearing in The Vicar Of Dibley, to Billy Connolly running naked through Trafalgar Square and Mr Bean infiltrating both Blind Date and a Torvill and Dean dance routine.
The BBC have launched this year’s appeal with a sketch featuring Alex Jones, Alison Hammond, Davina McCall, Gemma Collins, Dame Joan Collins, Jonathan Bailey, Nick Grimshaw, Rosie Jones and Simon Cowell, which you can see below:

Lenny Henry is to present his final Comic Relief this year.
The comedian co-founded the charity with fabled director Richard Curtis in 1985 and has since hosted multiple BBC telethons and been involved closely with the organization.
He said it was time to see “new faces” at the helm but remains life president of Comic Relief – a telethon called Red Nose Day that takes place annually and features comedians, singers and actors trying to raise money for various charities.
“When we first started Comic Relief back in 1985, I never dreamed we’d still be here today,” said Henry, an actor, comedian and creative who recently launched a Banijay-backed indie, Esmerelda Productions. Recent acting credits include The Witcher and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, while he created ITV drama Three Little Birds.
“I thought we’d probably do three shows and that would be it, but fast-forward nearly 40 years,...

We’ve had a marvellous run of Taskmaster series lately, so when a new line-up announcement is on the horizon, it’s easy to wonder whether the winning streak will continue or if we’re due a dud.
Never fear – Alex Horne and co. have delivered once again, although the series 17 Taskmaster line-up might not be quite what you’re expecting. Instead of the now-traditional Taskmaster family line-up, this time they’ve gone for a veteran from outside the world of stand-up comedy, plus four rising stars with slightly less mainstream recognition than normal. As ever with this show though, anybody you’re not familiar with at the start, you’ll almost certainly love by the end of the series.
The Taskmaster series 17 line-up is: Steve Pemberton, Sophie Willan, Nick Mohammed, John Robins and Joanne McNally! And here they are appearing in the very first trailer for the new run:...

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?
Plenty, it turns out. They’ll be popping up on screen and stage, as well as writing new projects both individually and together. As Larry Rickard told Den of Geek, “It’s not like we’re [famously fractious 70s soft rock band] The Eagles and we hate each other!” A Ghosts reunion down the line “wouldn’t be a mountain to climb,” says Rickard. “It’s a door that’s shut but obviously, doors have hinges and handles.”
And ghosts can just walk through them, we venture? “Well exactly, they haven’t even got to go to the effort of opening them.”

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Warning: This contains spoilers for all series of Taskmaster, including Series 15
Series 15 of Taskmaster has been delightfully ruthless already. So far we’ve had Ivor Graham sabotaging Kiell Smith-Bynoe in the first Live task and Greg Davies letting all the contestants get away with touching things in a task that said “you must not touch anything at any point”.
Then, in episode 4, the show joyously almost descended into full anarchy both over the definition of “throwing” and what a banana is (more on this later).
We suspect Taskmaster fans will be arguing over #throwgate for a while, but it’s not the first controversial decision to go down in the show’s history. In fact, for many, the mere mention of the words “potato”, “hula hoop” and “Mark Watson” are enough to trigger an epic Taskmaster rant to this day. Let’s take a look back at some of the show’s most questionable rulings.

Frankie Boyle has reacted to the news that the BBC has cancelled his comedy series New World Order.
The Scottish comedian has hosted the programme for six series, the first season of which arrived in 2017 on BBC Two.
In the satirical show, Boyle dicusses two current affair issues, usually related to politics, alongside guests that have included Sara Pascoe, Miles Jupp and Katherine Ryan.
However, the BBC has decided to end the series, with a spokesperson stating: “We would like to thank Frankie Boyle and all those involved for six great series of New World Order.”
The corporation made it clear that they are not severing ties with Boyle, adding: “We look forward to seeing what he does next on the BBC.”
Boyle responded to the news on social media, telling his followers: “Ah well, there’s to be no more New World Order on the BBC. Not surprising in the current climate,...

James Acaster has responded to rumours that he will replace Matt Lucas as the new host of The Great British Bake Off.
Following the announcement in December that the Little Britain star is stepping down from the baking competition series, many fans had begun to speculate who would replace him, with Acaster among the rumoured frontrunners.
Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday (11 March) alongside Prue Leith, stand-up comedian Acaster – who made a memorable appearance on the Stand Up to Cancer celebrity edition in 2019 – addressed his rumoured involvement.
“No-one’s spoken to me about it and rightly so,” he said.
“It was traumatic what happened to me in that tent. I think if I was one of the hosts, I’d be constantly having flashbacks and full meltdowns and I don’t think that’s very relaxing for the contestants.”

Matt Lucas’ time in the tent is over.
The Little Britain star announced Tuesday (6 December) that he was stepping down as one half of the hosting team on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off.
While fans have expressed their sadness at the comedian’s decision to move on, it does mean the door is open for another presenter to take on one of the most coveted jobs in television.
Whoever is chosen will join The Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding – who has hosted the show since it moved to Channel 4 in 2017 – succeeding his past co-presenters Sandi Toksvig and Lucas.
Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most likely replacements for Lucas as well as some who we just think have what it takes to make the tent hum with amusement.

Katherine Ryan has made further comments on an alleged sexual predator in the entertainment industry, claiming that he is an “open secret”.
Earlier this year, the Canadian comic accused a fellow comedian of being a sexual predator, stating that she had repeatedly called him out on set of an unidentified TV programme.
Speaking to Louis Theroux on Tuesday’s (22 November) episode of his self-titled BBC Two series, Louis Theroux Interviews, Ryan shared her belief that the alleged abuser is a “perpetrator of sexual assault”.
“It’s very dangerous for us to have this conversation,” the former 8 out of 10 Cats panellist said.
“I’m happy to have it, but it’s a litigious minefield because lots of people have tried to nail this person down for their alleged crimes and this person has very good lawyers, so am I going to put my mortgage on the line by saying who this...

There are not many festivals where you could easily cross paths with a Nobel Laureate or a Pulitzer Prize winner while queuing for some food - unless you are sauntering around HowTheLightGetsIn festival that is.
Something of an ideological lucky dip, HowTheLightGetsIn, the biggest philosophy and music festival in the world, is known for its eclectic line-ups. Previous speakers at the event span from Noam Chomsky, renowned academic, to Brian Eno, the English musician, Ed Milliband, former Labour Party leader, Philip Pullman, best-selling author, to two authors both famed for whipping up controversy, Richard Dawkins and Slavoj Zizek.
Update - due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth 11 on September 8 the festival is now taking place on October 1-2.
At its core, HowTheLightGetsIn is about trying to liberate philosophy from the far-flung elitist ivory tower of academia and make it more digestible and rousing for wider audiences. And it is Hilary Lawson,...

In season one, Viscount Bridgerton was less hero than impediment. The eldest Bridgerton son, he assumed responsibility for the matches of his younger siblings Daphne and Colin, and spent the season throwing his weight around – sometimes literally in the case of the punch-up and dual with Daphne’s suitor Simon. Anthony attempted to control everybody else’s marriage responsibilities while refusing to face up to his own. His mistress Siena Rosso eventually made the decision for him, recognising that an opera singer with her past would never be found respectable enough to become a society Viscountess. Siena moved on, and urged Anthony to do the same.
In season two, Anthony’s search for a wife is centre-stage, making actor Jonathan the romantic lead. It’s not the first time the actor has told a love story in his established stage and screen career, which started in his childhood with the Royal Shakespeare Company,...

WestEnd Films has launched a global sales campaign for Guillem Morales’ (“The Miniaturist”) revenge thriller “The Duchess of Malfi,” produced by Miriam Segal’s Good Films Collective (“Postcard Killings”). Based on John Webster’s classic Jacobean play, the feature adaptation was penned by Luke Garrett (“Ruby Strangelove Young Witch”).
Casting for the period drama is led by BAFTA-nominees Morfydd Clark (“Saint Maud”) and Sam Riley (“Control”) with BIFA-nominee Dominic Cooper (“Preacher”). Equally impressive is the film’s behind-the-scenes lineup, including Academy Award-nominated DoP Pawel Edelman (“The Pianist”), BAFTA-nominated costume designer Carlo Poggioli (“Cold Mountain”), and Editor Joe Randall-Cutler (“I Hate Suzie”). Shooting will begin in November in Italy, with WestEnd set to present the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival virtual market.

Sony Pictures Television will replace their traditional L.A. Screenings with a virtual and on-demand experience in May, the company announced Friday.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are to produce a sitcom for the BBC starring British comedian Sara Pascoe.
The pair’s Stolen Picture banner, which is backed by Sony Pictures Television is behind the untitled six-part series for BBC Two. It is their latest TV commission since forming the production company, after Deadline revealed that they are adapting Ben Aaronovitch’s fantasy drama Rivers of London.
Pascoe, a well known stand up who starred in BBC comedy W1A, is co-producing the series, which is about family, relationships and biology. She subverts the traditional sitcom format by combining her eccentric characters, surreal moments and factual insight. Pascoe doesn’t know why everyone else in the world is pairing up and having babies and sets out on a mission to understand them. She tries to prove that romantic love is mere chemicals and conditioning and doesn’t deserve our respect. This conflicts...

With spots on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, you've almost certainly seen Canadian-turned-Brit Katherine Ryan on your TV in the last few years.
If you were in Regent's Park this summer, you may have even seen her on your lunch break. Along with Josh Widdicombe, Ryan performed a set to Londoners at the Volvic Juiced Comedy Event.
"It was wonderful," she told Digital Spy about the show.
"One of my favourite things about living in the UK is having that chance to go to festivals.
"So many festivals all come along and this really felt like an opportunity to bring the festival to the people, right in Regent's Park."
Of her new set Glam Role Model, Ryan said: "We don't have glamour models in Canada at all.
"I mean we do have girls who get their tits out, but it's frowned upon. It's not totally, totally mainstream.

Alan Davies has hit out at the BBC's decision to announce the fact that the corporation had banned all-male talent shows.
The Qi star's new Dave show As Yet Untitled begins on Monday and will feature a woman in every episode.
"I think it's important," he said. "I feel like I've been asked it a lot in recent years. The idea that there aren't any funny women around is so outdated, if it wasn't ten years ago.
"When they're queueing up to come on here - we've had Katherine Ryan and Isy Suttie and we still havent had Sara Pascoe or Claudia O'Doherty. There's lines and lines and lines of people coming. So there will always be a woman here, maybe two, maybe three. That's the intention."
However, he criticised the BBC's move to make the all-male panel show ban public, suggesting that it puts unreasonable pressure on female guests.

Thanks to fellow locker of shadows Richard Cosgrove I found myself heading sweaty palmed into London. A hearty Mcdonalds saw this country mouse ready for action among the snooty town mice and so having left my rubbish on the Kindertransport memorial (as is the custom) I set out for the Ministry of Sound. I really did think it would be bigger, the legendary Ministry and it was not at all like the Ministries in Orwell's 1984 which you can see for miles around and that saddened me.
Mustering all my #swag I let it be known that I was on the list dahling and strode manfully forth. I was given pause by a diner in the courtyard, one of those ones made out of an old cargo container, it was a good one though not all grotty and seeing it was nearly a fiver for a beer and the Gdp of...
