You can officially go to infinity and beyond straight from your home, beginning next month. Disney has announced that “Lightyear” will release on its streaming platform Disney+ on Aug. 3.
Pixar and Disney’s newest film, which was first released in theaters on June 17, serves as a prequel to the franchise’s first four “Toy Story” films, which kicked off with the original more than 27 years ago. However, rather than following one of the character’s backstories like most prequel films do, “Lightyear” is the in-universe movie that inspired the creation of Andy’s most beloved action figure. In a meta move, Pixar has created the fictional film that started it all.
In the film, Buzz (voiced by Chris Evans) and his crew embark on an intergalactic adventure only to find themselves lost in space 4.2 million lightyears from Earth. Their mission to return to Earth is further complicated when he and...

Prequels, sequels, and spin-offs are all the major studios seem to be cranking out lately, and now it’s Pixar’s turn. This time we get Lightyear, the film that Andy saw in 1995, the one that made him fall in love with Buzz Lightyear and want nothing more than a Buzz toy for his birthday. I may be wrong, but I’m not sure there’s much here to inspire any child to want a Buzz Lightyear toy, Andy should have just stuck to Woody.
We open with Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger, as he lands on a new undiscovered planet with his Space Ranger partner, Alisha Hawthorne,...

This is the story of Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans) and his adventure, as his starship crew is marooned on a strange planet. He is determined to get them off the rock, so after a year his mission leader Alisha (Uzo Aruba) builds an infrastructure to begin test flights. When Buzz does over 23 of them, due to the theory of relativity everybody ages four years for each test. The only ones still alive as the flight is finally successful is his robot cat Sox (Peter Sohn) and the second generation citizens of Star Command … including Alisha’s granddaughter Izzy (Keke Palmer), Mo (Taika Waititi) and ex-con Darby (Dale Soles). The conflict in Pixar’s ageless 1995 breakthrough feature, Toy Story, hinged on the displacement anxiety of old-fashioned pull-string cowboy doll Woody when his young owner Andy acquired a popular new action figure called Buzz Lightyear. The movie named for that Space Ranger, Lightyear, extends the Toy Story franchise by showing us the sci-fi adventure that hooked Andy on the character and inspired the merch. This is a funny spinoff with suspense and heart, a captivatingly spirited toon take on splashy live-action retro popcorn entertainment. The title character is given splendid voice by Chris Evans, balancing heroism and human fallibility with infectious warmth.
My one major gripe is that this movie has left me low-key obsessed with wanting an emotional support cat robot like Sox, the feline automaton companion assigned to Buzz by Star Command to ease his troubled mind after a series of setbacks.

He was the delusional do-gooder that made up one half of Pixar’s O.G. dynamic duo, the Toy Story space cadet with the square chin, a savior complex and an unstoppable quest to rid the galaxy of the evil Emperor Zurg. His name was Buzz Lightyear, defender of decency and good dentistry throughout the cosmos, and thanks to his chemistry with a cowpoke named Woody, this popular (and highly merchandisable) plastic-fantastic hero became an interstellar superstar. He’s more recognizable as a brand ambassador than Pixar’s signature animated desk lamp,...

“Lightyear” is the first movie that Pixar has released in theaters since the start of the pandemic, a return to normal that would feel more exciting if “Lightyear” wasn’t also the first Pixar movie since the start of the pandemic that feels like it only belongs on Disney Plus. Bursting onto the big screen with huge “this project was announced during a shareholders meeting” energy, “Lightyear” is exactly the kind of gratuitous property-mining that corporate streamers were invented to support.
That would still be true if this unexciting “Toy Story” spinoff had been able to match the creative highs of recent Pixar features like “Luca” and “Turning Red,” but — a sad product of its time. Much like the square-jawed Space Ranger who lends this glorified Dlc of a film his name, “Lightyear” remains firmly stuck in the past even as it hurtles toward the future. The villain’s name in this summer’s “Jurassic World Dominion” refers to the author of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” but it’s “Lightyear” that takes us through the looking glass. What we’re about to watch, an opening title card tells us, is the movie that made Andy from “Toy Story” want a Buzz Lightyear action figure back in 1995.
It’s a heady premise combined with a good deal of Hollywood navel-gazing, but that premise winds up being the most interesting attribute of this new Pixar feature. Rather than play like a significant departure from the “Toy Story” films that spawned it, “Lightyear” instead emerges as a disappointing runner-up, capturing but a fraction of the comedy, thrills and poignancy of its predecessors.
There are a million different directions that Disney could have gone with this material, from genre thrills to mind-bending meta references, but director Angus MacLane (“Finding Dory...

Not just one of the best animated films of the year, Pixar’s “Onward” sits as one of the best animated films, period. Beautifully inventive and narratively rich, “Onward” stands as one of the awards season’s most underrated gems, especially with its story.
One of the last films to be seen in theaters before the Covid-19 pandemic, the film has been in the thick of the awards race for best animated feature. As Pixar always does, the film is much more than its visuals. The movie features wonderful voice performances from its cast, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mychael and Jeff Danna’s inventive score and a wonderful original number “Carried Me With You,” written by Brandi Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Dan Scanlon, Jason Headley and Keith Bunin’s screenplay hits all the emotional chords, especially in the film’s big finale.

In what is the first of two Pixar films released this year, the animation giant’s latest film Onward has had a few hurdles in front of it. Despite some clear influences, the film is an original work from Pixar and thus takes a bit more selling than, say, Toy Story 4 but ahead of release it didn’t quite get the major promotional push others have and there have been a few controversies surrounding a van and Lgbt content! As the Covid-19 pandemic halts the human world, Onward’s struggle is now certified, but I urge readers to check out the film (which will be arriving on digital platforms and TV box office soon) because, in spite of it not perhaps challenging the studio’s greatest work, Onward is great fun and has a massive heart hat’s much needed right now.

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” will cast a spell on North American moviegoers this weekend, opening with $38 million to $40 million at 4,310 locations, early estimates showed on Friday.
The figure is slightly below pre-release forecasts, which had pegged “Onward” for a launch in the $40 million to $45 million range. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their deceased father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for 24 hours.
Ben Affleck’s sports drama “The Way Back” is projected to make around $8 million at 2,718 venues for the weekend, in line with forecasts, which had ranged from $6 million to $10 million.
Universal’s sophomore frame of Elisabeth Moss’ “The Invisible Man,” which has taken in $35 million in its first six days in North America, will finish second with about $14 million.

How good is Pixar at making audiences cry in the last 10 minutes of a movie? So good that the studio serves up a moving finale to “Onward” when everything that comes before that ending has been rather spotty, particularly when compared to the studio’s greatest achievements.
It’s the same strategy behind a band saving its hit songs for the encore — make the audience leave on a high and they’ll forget the less successful parts — but while the film’s sentimental climax will have filmgoers walking into the lobby still dabbing away their tears, it doesn’t entirely expiate “Onward” of its many flaws.
The film is set in a world where magic once thrived, where pegasuses shared the sky with dragons while centaurs roamed the land. Then someone invented the light bulb, and the denizens of this reality decided electrical engineering was easier to learn than wizardry,...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” launched with $2 million in North America on Thursday night in preview shows.
The number is in the same range as “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which opened with $2.3 million in previews in June and went on to a $47 million launch weekend.
“Onward” is expected to dominate domestic moviegoing this weekend and collect between $40 million and $45 million at 4,310 sites. Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” the latest original film from the animation studio after several years of blockbuster sequels, made $2 million at the box office in Thursday night previews. It opens on over 4,200 screens this weekend. This adds to the sneak peak total of $650,000 the film brought in on Leap Day.
“Onward” is one of two original films Pixar has planned for this year, the other being “Soul” this summer. That makes “Onward” the first Pixar movie released in the spring, and also the first original title the studio has put out since “Coco” in 2017. Projections for the movie are sitting around $45 million, but it could climb higher up to at least $50 million if word of mouth is strong, and the A-list cast of “Avengers” alums Tom Holland and Chris Pratt voicing the leads shouldn’t hurt either.

For animation feature fans it’s been a long cold couple of months since the Christmas Day release of Spies In Disguise. Well, the drought is finally over. This weekend sees the first big studio feature animated flick of 2020, and we’re not counting Sonic The Hedgehog or Call Of The Wild which had CGI stars (or co-stars) working with humans against mostly real backdrops. And it’s the “jackpot” for fans because it’s from the talented folks from Emeryville, CA: Pixar. Though it’s a tad early (they generally release their works in Summer or close to the end of the year), it’s because it’s the first time in five years that they’ve got two flicks in the same year (Soul arrives in June). Oh, and another reason to be interested: this is the first original, non-sequel in over two years (it was franchise time...

A new era at Pixar begins this weekend with the release of “Onward,” the first of two original films coming this year from the hallowed, Disney-owned animation studio. It’s a big shift for Pixar after a decade in which it released multiple sequels that grossed billions worldwide, and expectations for this newcomer’s box office run are far more tempered.
The last two Pixar releases, “Toy Story 4” and “Incredibles 2,” both earned opening weekends of over $100 million and global totals of over $1 billion, joining “Toy Story 3” and “Finding Dory” in a quartet of sequels that hit those marks in the 2010s. Overall, seven of the 11 Pixar films in the last decade were sequels, and of the four that were original films, only one had an opening weekend of over $70 million: the Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” which opened to $90 million in summer 2015.

Watching the trailer for Pixar’s Onward a few months ago in a theater packed with children was an odd experience. The film, about teenage elfs on a magical quest, seemed like an eyebrow-raiser–an ultra-high concept animated entry that looked more Sony or DreamWorks than Pixar. (Those are not compliments.) Its central conceit–a spell brings back the elves’ late father for one day, but only the lower half of his body–seemed downright scary for little ones. It also seemed way more Weekend at Bernie’s than one would expect from the titans behind Toy Story and Finding Nemo. In other words, Onward appeared to be more Good Dinosaur than Inside Out.

Even when a new Pixar movie isn’t up to, well, Pixar’s regular high standards, there is still animated magic to be had. That’s the case with Onward, a sweet-silly-slapdash tale about two pointy-earred elves: shy, introverted, teenaged Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Spider-Man Tom Holland) and his blustering, bumbling older brother Barley (voiced by Star-Lord Chris Pratt). Both boys have daddy issues since the old man died a few years back — not surprising, given that parents tend to have a high mortality rate in the Disney/Pixar universe.

If there’s one thing you can bank on when it comes to Pixar, it’s emotion. No matter the story that they’re telling, the animation experts will seek to bring you to tears. It’s one of the reasons why they’ve become the industry leader in making films that, while aimed at kids on the surface, are really speaking to adults. Onward, opening this week, is just the latest example of that. Children will see a romp with creative designs, while grown ups will be wrecked by the emotional message at its core. It’s another one of Pixar’s top notch efforts, starting off the year with a definite Best Animated Feature contender. The film is an animated adventure, steeped in fantasy and magic. Long ago, the world was filled with magic, but as modern technology came into play, that was cast aside for convenience. We...

“Long ago”, the opening of monologue in Disney Pixar’s latest, Onward, begins, “the world was full of wonder.” Magic ruled the world, the voice explains, and creatures of all shapes and sizes populated it, expressing courage and generosity in every form, despite their (many) physical differences. Seemingly every new day brought another tale of inspiration and wonder, and a chance for every generation to live these wonderful stories together.
Dan Scanlon, the longtime Disney animator and director whose early-career credits include Pocahontas 2, The Little Mermaid 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and 101 Dalmatians 2, clearly knows a thing or two about the lengths we can go to recreate that magic – and the depths into which it can lead us. Onward is his sophomore film as a director; Scanlon had previously written and directed Monsters University. In the real world, home invasion is a frightening proposition, but in a funny new clip from A Bad Idea Gone Wrong, it looks like an amusing way to spend a little time with a couple of harmless fellows. The film follows "two would-be thieves who arm the alarm system and have to break out of the house they just broke into. The discovery of a house sitter brings double crosses, sexual tensions, and wild discoveries that make their escape more difficult." Our clip sets that up nicely. More from the official statement: "This comedy won three awards on the festival circuit this year, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Ensemble Cast at SXSW. "Who are these people trying to protect themselves from?" Freestyle Digital Media has debuted the first trailer for the indie comedy A Bad Idea Gone Wrong, a goofy film about two wanna-be thieves who trap themselves in a house they just broke into. Yeah, it's pretty much one of those why-not, let's-try-it concepts that kind of works, but also kind of doesn't. This played at a few festivals this year to quite a bit of acclaim, like winning the Best Feature prize at the dead Center Film Festival. The cast of A Bad Idea Gone Wrong includes Matt Jones, Will Rogers, Eleanore Pienta, Sam Eidson, and Jonny Mars. This looks a bit odd, there's something weird about the trailer that doesn't feel quite right to me. But I do think this seems like the film would be worth seeing at a festival. There's something quirky about it that's appealing enough.

“For most kids in high school, the future promises better days. But for a certain group, there’s no time like the past.”
Geek culture has become so widely accepted and adopted by the mainstream that I’m not sure the stereotypical Jock vs. Nerd/Geek war still exists. One thing is for sure though, a-holes still exist. If you’re popular but also an a-hole, or just shallow for that matter, this video is a message of warning to you. As for everyone else, you will thoroughly enjoy these fictional, but all-too-real confessions.
“It Doesn’t Get Better” was written and directed by Jason Headley. Be sure to check out his channel for more funny shorts you’re sure to enjoy, as well as some famous and familiar commercials that he’s worked on.

"Don't try to fix it. I just need you to listen."
For any of you who have ever been in a serious relationship, I'm sure you've heard the following before. It's just presented in an overly exaggerated way that we can all laugh at and enjoy. The short is called It's Not About the Nail, it was directed by Jason Headley, and it's hilarious. Enjoy the show!

MTV's "Jersey Shore in Appalachia" reality series "Buckwild" had a very brief and very unhappy lifecycle. It launched amid censure from critics and lawmakers, over its largely cheap depiction of kids from rural West Virginia communities. It concluded ignominiously, with one cast member arrested on drug charges, and another dead of carbon monoxide poisoning, the results of a tragic accident unrelated to the filming of the show. One week after that cast member, Shain Gandee, died, MTV opted to cancel "Buckwild."

A memo obtained by The Huffington Post -- authored by Katie Zwick of the Creative Artists Agency, delineating "network needs" to their client production companies -- indicates there is still a strong interest in a "Buckwild" redux. More specifically, the...
