Gialanella began his broadcast career during the decade of the 1980's
and into the early 1990's working at ABC, New York as a Quantel
Paintbox artist and then as on-air network Art Director/Graphics
Producer. During this period of incredible growth and technological
innovation in the broadcast industry, Donald was at the forefront of
development in electronic broadcast graphics and animation design.
Working with such icons of the Television industry as Roone Arledge, Av
Weston and Chet Forte, Gialanella was given the opportunity to
literally change the face of ABC's programming "look". He was the
Graphics producer for an impressive list of Network programs including,
World News Tonight, also working with Peter Jennings on his privately
produced shows under Peter Jennings Productions, 20/20, Nightline, Good
Morning America and Early Morning News.
In 1988 Donald redesigned the broadcast style at ABC Sports, beginning his involvement with Sports programming which resulted in two EMMY nominations, one for The New York Marathon and the other for the Olympic Graphics Package. He was awarded an Emmy as Graphics Producer for Monday Night Football in 1990.
Gialanella worked on the visual concept and design of numerous shows after leaving the network. Among them were, American Gladiators, National Geographic Presents, initial design for the Discovery Channel, The Joy Behar Show, Miss America and many others.
From 1993- 1995, he traveled to Turkey to become the Creative Director of TRT- Turkish Radio & Television, where he formed and managed a modern broadcast graphics department in Istanbul and Ankara for the 4th largest broadcaster in the world. He coordinated the design and production of editorial and advertising campaigns for 5 domestic and 2 international channels.
