Alberto Corredor's Baghead is the most recent example of "well, that would have been better as a short film." Mainly because, well, it is better as a short film. Corredor adapts the truncated version of Baghead written by Lorcan Reilly into the scattershot feature now on Shudder. New screenwriters Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire struggle to extend the fifteen-minute original into an engaging hour and a half, especially during its bloated second act. Corredor crisply accentuates the mildewy and eerie atmosphere that saturates an outdated basement architecture, but by the end, falls victim to the usual follies that come with shorts-turned-features unable to sustain their big-screen treatments.

Director Alberto Corredor expands his own award-winning 2017 short for this original British horror. In addition to delivering a steady flow of creepy chills, it also has significant franchise potential, and if that happens, sales of potato sacks are going to go through the roof come Halloween time.
Baghead is set in present-day Berlin, where cash-strapped 20-something Iris (The Witcher’s Freya Allan) inherits a large run-down pub, after the horrific death of her estranged father, Owen (Peter Mullan). The manager of her father’s estate is keen to offload the property, but Iris decides to stay, inviting her best friend Katie (Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker) to join her.

With the divide between critics and audiences growing ever larger in today’s day and age, fans of films and genres have begun looking to industry leaders and seasoned storytellers for recommendations that would otherwise fly under the radar of the mainstream audience. Stephen King has come out to recommend one such film, starring Monarch: Legacy of Monsters alum Wyatt Russel.
Wyatt Russel in Night Swim

The film has a critics score of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is contrasted by a 43% audience score for the film.

There’s nothing as relaxing as a casual swim to cap off a long day; that is of course unless there is an evil entity watching you in the pool, waiting to drag you under and never let go. The new horror film “Night Swim” dives into that conundrum when it arrives on Peacock on Friday, April 5. Starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, the suburban horror film delivers scares that you will have to see to believe. You can watch with a subscription to Peacock.

Released in 2014, Bryce McGuire and Rod Blackhurst made a proof-of-concept short film called Night Swim. Citing inspirations such as Jaws, Christine, and Poltergeist, the ensuing four minutes play with the uncanny feeling of being watched by somebody, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. It was an impressive enough debut that Blumhouse picked it up for a feature-length adaptation, also entitled Night Swim, although the results are more sink than swim.

Soon after the release of M3GAN in January of 2023, it was announced that the team behind the film – Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster – were aiming to replicate M3GAN‘s January theatrical success by setting a January 2024 release date for their supernatural thriller Night Swim. Come out, come out, wherever you are — Chauncey the Teddy Bear wants to play.
The latest installment of Blumhouse’s creepy toys gone astray horror subgenre, “Imaginary” centers on a decades-spanning story of a (possibly) demonic stuffed animal that torments both mother and stepdaughter.
DeWanda Wise stars as Jessica, a mom who moves back into her childhood home, where she is reunited with her old teddy bear. Her stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) has an eerie link to the toy, however, forcing Jessica to reexamine her own traumatic past. Or is it just all in Jessica’s head?
The official synopsis reads: “When Jessica (Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s...

What’s Bad: The film doesn’t know what to add to its premise to take the story somewhere that doesn’t feel cliché or overdone.
Loo Break: There are many, especially during the second act when the movie tries to make you feel like it is scary when it is not.
Watch or Not?: There are many better options if you are looking for a horror film. This film is a pass.

Universal, Blumhouse and co-producer James Wan took us for a Night Swim in theaters over the weekend, with the Bryce McGuire-directed horror movie becoming the genre’s very first theatrical release of the new year. Was it a strong start for the horror genre, you ask?
Night Swim debuted in 3,250 theaters across the United States over the weekend, opening to $12 million domestically. Worldwide, the film scared up $17.6 million in its debut.
Here’s the day-to-day breakdown here in the United States:
Friday, January 5: $5,250,000 Saturday, January 6: $4,180,000 Sunday, January 7: $2,570,000
For the sake of comparison, Blumhouse’s M3GAN was released in January of last year, and the viral appeal of the title character drove the film to a $30 million domestic opening. Granted, nobody in their right mind expected Night Swim to perform the way M3GAN did.
Other recent Blumhouse releases and their domestic opening weekend totals include Five Nights at Freddy’s...

Sunday Am Writethru: While the supply of movies was able to keep the two-week holiday box office up over 2022’s by 13%, the lack of a mega tentpole carrying over into the New Year — ala Avatar: The Way of Water — is being felt.
The first weekend’s box office of 2024 looks to be down -18% from the same period in 2023, with an estimated $87M. If we thought the fall box office was wonky, well, here comes 2024. Remember, last year at this time had M3GAN providing a cushion. However, Universal/Blumhouse’s Night Swim is not that hipster, young female YA movie, with a No. 2 debut at $12M (granted at the top of its projection range).
Warner Bros.’ Wonka won its third out of four weekends with $14.4M and a $164.6M running total. Overall, that’s a four-weekend No. 1 streak for Warner Bros. There are still kids off from school, with...

If you've heard about "Night Swim" and its haunted swimming pool concept, your first reaction might have been to wonder whether something had gone horribly awry over at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Producers James Wan and Jason Blum are horror juggernauts, after all, and a film about an evil swimming pool initially seems to have a lot more in common with retro low-budget horror schlock like "Amityville Death Toilet" or "Death Bed."
But even minimal research into this upcoming horror effort from first-time director Bryce McGuire reveals something altogether more serious. Based on the filmmaker's 2014 short film of the same name, "Night Swim" follows an increasingly successful formula of transforming horror shorts into fully-fledged features. 2022's surprise hit "Smile," for instance, was based on the short "Laura Hasn't Slept," while the best horror movie of the last decade, "Skinamarink," started life as a 28-minute, criminally underseen YouTube video entitled "Heck.

Take a dip in the murky waters of supernatural horror with Night Swim! Director Bryce McGuire makes a splash in his feature directorial debut, turning a suburban backyard into a supernatural battleground. The film, swimming upstream against the frigid release waters of January, stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon as parents grappling with more than just adjusting to a new home, uncovering the aquatic enigma of a potentially haunted pool. For someone like me, who spent childhood summers playing Marco Polo and avoiding sewer gators in the shadowy depths at night, Night Swim hits close to home.
Night Swim introduces us to the Wallers, a family yearning for stability as they settle into a new home, with their patriarch Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) seeking to stay afloat amidst the challenges of his waning health. The property’s unique feature, a seemingly invigorating pool, becomes a centerpiece of their daily life,...

The first major release of 2024 is a movie about a killer swimming pool. "Night Swim," which was co-written and directed by Bryce McGuire and produced by James Wan ("The Conjuring"), has paddled out into the shallow waters of the January box office, but it faces lingering competition from festive releases. Chief among those is the chocolate-oriented musical fantasy "Wonka," which looks set to hold on to the top spot this weekend after reclaiming it from "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" last week.
Even with the charms of Timothée Chalamet in the titular role, "Wonka" was a risky box office bet. Carrying a production cost of $125 million, it hovers somewhere between mid-budget and big-budget, and musicals can be a tough sell to general audiences. But thanks to nostalgia for 1971's "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," director Paul King's ("Paddington") talent for entertaining family members of all ages, and the Chalamet fan army,...

Universal is making some modest waves to start off the 2024 box office, with the studio’s release of Blumhouse Productions’ new horror film “Night Swim” looking to land in second place in its opening. The PG-13 shocker earned $5.2 million across its opening day and preview screenings and is now projected to earn about $12.5 million across the three-day frame.
It’s a solid dive-in for “Night Swim,” which is hardly putting producers in the financial deep end at only a $15 million price tag before marketing. The mostly-horror banner Blumhouse, which officially merged with Atomic Monster this week, smashed expectations a year ago when the killer doll movie “M3GAN” earned $30 million in the first weekend of the year. Studios are wont to sneak a horror programmer in at the top of the calendar and, while “Night Swim” isn’t exactly a peak performer across recent examples, it demonstrates why the early-calendar strategy continues to work.

Night Swim is headed for a domestic opening of $12.5 million from 3,250 theaters, good enough for a second-place weekend finish behind Wonka.
The Universal movie, from horror maestros Jason Blum and James Wan, is the only new wide release this weekend as the post-holiday doldrums begin. The pic won the Friday race with $5.2 million, including $1.5 million in previews.
If estimates hold, Night Swim will come in slightly ahead of expectations despite scathing reviews and a C CinemaScore from audiences, although it won’t come anywhere near to matching the $30.4 million opening of Universal and Blumhouse’s M3GAN on the same weekend a year ago.
Directed by Bryce McGuire, Night Swim is adapted from a 2014 short film he made in collaboration with Rod Blackhurst. The 98-minute movie begins with flashback of a young girl who meets an unfortunate end when she attempts to retrieve a mysterious toy boat from her backyard swimming pool.

In January of 2023, the name on everyone's lips was "M3GAN." This year, Blumhouse is trying to recapture that magic again with Bryce McGuire's "Night Swim," a horror film about a family that moves into a new home and discovers there is something seriously sinister in their backyard. Based on McGuire's short film of the same name, "Night Swim" stars Wyatt Russell and Academy Award-nominee Kerry Condon as two parents trying their best in the face of the patriarch's recent multiple sclerosis diagnosis, kids adjusting to a new school, and well, a haunted swimming pool.

The high concept supernatural thriller Night Swim is out in theaters now, plunging a family into an aquatic nightmare thanks to a haunted swimming pool. It also happens to be based on a 2014 short film of the same name by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, and you can watch it right now.
When speaking with McGuire ahead of Night Swim‘s theatrical release, the filmmaker said of the short’s inspiration, “The short was really just Rod Blackhurst and I hanging out in a pool one night and being like, ‘Remember when you were a kid, and you got freaked out because you couldn’t see the bottom anymore?’ And you thought that something was beneath you. It was like, ‘Yeah, I still feel that.’ Then, ‘Let’s see if we can capture that in a short amount of time, in a short format.’”

Night Swim has begun its run in theaters with $1.5 million in previews.
The horror pic, from Blumhouse and Universal, is the first new nationwide release of 2024 and is tipped to open to $9 million or more in North America. That may not be enough to topple Christmas musical Wonka from the top spots.
Directed by Bryce McGuire’ Night Swim is adapted from a 2014 short film he made in collaboration with Rod Blackhurst. The 98-minute film is about a haunted pool, which has left some reviewers with their heads in their hands. “And when the most chilling line in a movie is ‘There’s something wrong with that pool!’ it’s all too easy to imagine the barbs on a future episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000,” writes The Hollywood Reporter critic Frank Scheck.
Fortunately for the filmmakers, horror fans don’t necessarily pay attention to reviews.

The horror genre has no shortage of films about haunted or possessed items. And I'm not just talking about the usual haunted house or haunted doll fare, either. Films like "Slaxx" boast haunted, killer pants, there's the possessed sofa of "Killer Sofa," and no one could forget "Death Bed: The Bed That Eats." Blumhouse's newest horror flick, "Night Swim," asks the audience to take a dip into a new haunted object: a backyard swimming pool. Based on his short film of the same name, Bryce McGuire's directorial feature debut centers on the Waller family, after former pro-baseball player Ray (Wyatt Russell) and his wife Eve (Kerry Condon) move their family to Minnesota as Ray learns to adjust to life following a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. With hydrotherapy highly encouraged, the Waller family buys a house with a swimming pool -- one that, unbeknownst to them, has a deep, dark history.

A luxury item that seemingly every warm-weather homeowner covets, the swimming pool has somehow become troubled waters for a wide range of movie and TV characters. In The Swimmer, it’s a symbol of personal decay for Burt Lancaster’s alcoholic suburbanite. In the simply-titled Swimming Pool it’s the stuff of Franco-British erotic intrigue. And in Stranger Things, there’s all manner of nastiness lurking beneath the seemingly placid chlorinated surface. In short, there are – ahem – depths to the onscreen pool party, more murky than shimmering.

What To Watch This Weekend Till January, 7th 2024 ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Much like its predecessor, this week leaves audiences craving that elusive spark of innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of cinematic offerings. A notable absence of animated content is a stark reality, but fear not, for the enigmatic allure of mystery thrillers takes center stage. Amidst the somewhat lackluster releases, Sky Cinema treats us to a comedic escape with “Arthur’s Whisky,” a film exclusively available through subscription. At the same time, the rest of the streaming lineup demands a commitment of a different kind – the decision to purchase or rent.
However, before the disappointment, let’s pivot to the silver lining in serialized storytelling. Netflix beckons us with the binge-worthy allure of “Fool Me Once,” offering a glimmer of hope amid the scarcity. Meanwhile, stalwarts like “Fargo” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” continue to grace our screens with fresh episodes,...

You know might feel really great, and completely relaxing, after surviving the often stressful end-of-the-year holidays? Why a refreshing dip in the pool of course! Oh, but you’re not near an indoor facility, so you’ll have to wait out the long frigid winter until the temps are near ninety or so. Well, how about making a virtual splash at the multiplex? And this “cement pond” doesn’t shut down with the sunset. But doing “laps” alone in the fluorescent lit waters can be pretty spooky. And that’s the inspiration for the first new horror flick of 2024, which may just make you “swear off” any notions about taking a Night Swim. Marco…Marco…
This tale of soggy terror begins with a flashback to the early 1990s. Late one night a girl of eight or nine spies her ailing brother’s motorboat doing circles in the deep end of the family pool.

Ready to take a “Night Swim?”
“Night Swim” is the story of a young couple (played by Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon), who move, with their family, into a new house. One of the biggest draws of this new house? The oversized swimming pool in the back yard. (Russell’s character has a degenerative disease; he thinks the pool will help.) Of course, soon after moving in they start to notice that the pool is exhibiting some alarming tendencies. Yes, this pool is haunted.
It’s the perfect movie for people who get unnecessarily freaked out when they wade into the deep end, who wonder what is lurking in the shadowy corner of the pool or who have ever read the Chuck Palahniuk short story “Guts” (don’t look it up – it made people puke). And it’s the perfect subject for a horror movie, uncannily turning an everyday space...

This article contains major spoilers for "Night Swim."
It's January, which means it's time for another Blumhouse horror movie with a wild premise that looks to be a heck of a lot of fun. Bryce McGuire's "Night Swim" centers on the Waller family of Ray (Wyatt Russell), his wife Eve (Kerry Condon), and children Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle) and Elliot (Gavin Warren) who unknowingly move into a home with a haunted pool. Okay, so "haunted" might not be the operative word to describe these wanton waters, but there's something seriously sinister about their swimming pool, and their lives may be at stake if they're not careful.
The film was produced by horror master James Wan and shares a bit of spiritual energy with his bonkers masterpiece "Malignant," but doesn't quite similarly fly off the rails. Whether or not this is a positive or negative attribute will differ from person to...

January is here. That’s the time when studios will traditionally and unceremoniously dump movies in which they don’t have a lot of confidence. That usually includes a lot of horror movies. Along with his wife Eve (Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin) and kids Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Elliot (Fear the Walking Dead’s Gavin Warren), he seems to find...

“Night Swim,” a supernatural thriller about a ghost-plagued pool, is attempting to start the 2024 box office with a splash.
The Universal Pictures film, which marks the year’s first nationwide release, is targeting a debut of $9 million to $11 million from 3,200 North American theaters. It’s a decent start for the $15 million-budgeted movie, which won’t face competition on the horror front until March’s haunted-teddy-bear-inspired “Imaginary.”
“Night Swim,” written and directed by Bryce McGuire and starring Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon, follows a family who finds out that an otherwordly presence haunts the backyard swimming pool in their new home. Reviews rarely correlate to ticket sales with horror, which is good because Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman criticized “Night Swim” as “too familiar and derivative — and too PG-13.”
January tends to be a box office dead zone, and 2024 may ignite at an especially glacial pace. That’s because...

A year ago, “M3GAN,” one of the snazziest films ever produced by Blumhouse Productions, was the exception to the rule of first-weekend-of-January trash thrillers. The movie was witty and shivery in a preposterous way, its robot-killer-doll scenario actually had a thing or two to say about AI, and it gave us the year’s most memorable android-girl dance meme — at least, until Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams danced with her hands to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.” But now, opening in the same junkyard weekend slot, we have another Blumhouse production, “Night Swim,” which restores a certain order to the cinematic universe by being as tepid and unscary as a proper early-in-January movie should be.
“Night Swim” is about a family that moves into a house with a swimming pool that’s haunted, and everything about the spirits that rule this pool — the ghost backstory, the greenish-brown sludge that oozes up from the drain,...

Expanding a horror short to feature length is tricky work, particularly when the short in question gets straight to the scares. Writer/Director Bryce McGuire’s 2014 short Night Swim, a collaboration with Rod Blackhurst, cut straight to the horror to exploit everyone’s worst fears about swimming pools. Almost a full decade later, McGuire’s feature expansion showcases more ways to mine terror from the aquatic concept, buoyed by a great cast, but a familiar formula and simplified mythology threaten to sink it all.
After a cold open demonstrates the dangers of the film’s haunted location, a seemingly benign anywhere America backyard pool, Night Swim introduces the ill-fated family destined to discover the supernatural treachery awaiting them. The Waller family are at the beginning of a new chapter in their lives; a recent degenerative illness diagnosis cut a professional baseball career short for dad Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell). As...
