Washington — Roger Stone wants a federal judge to look at whether the Justice Department prematurely released a draft copy of a sealed indictment and then enabled CNN to cover his early morning arrest.
CNN says it was present at the arrest because its reporters noticed clues that an indictment was imminent, and sent a news crew to stake out his home on Jan. 25.
Stone, a longtime Trump associate, is accused of misleading the House Intelligence Committee about the nature of his contacts with WikiLeaks during the 2016 presidential election. He himself had suggested in recent months that an indictment was a possibility, but his legal filing questions the timing.
According to Stone’s filing, a CNN news crew arrived at his home at 4:58 a.m. that morning and set up a camera in the street. The FBI arrested him at 6:06 a.m., and a reporter for CNN called Stone...

This week’s “SNL” cold open had exactly one topic it wanted to cover this week: Jeff Bezos’ penis.
The sketch was a parody of “Meet the Press,” with “SNL” cast member Kyle Mooney as Chuck Todd, with Kenan Thompson as Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson, Cecily Strong as Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan and Leslie Jones as former DNC chair Donna Brazile as the guests.
They of course went straight into the big topic of the moment — Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ claim that David Pecker tried to use a nude selfie (aka a d— pic) as leverage in a blackmail scheme.
Mooney’s Todd opened the discussion by asking, simply, “What do you think Jeff Bezos’ penis is going to look like?” Strong said she figured it was “small potatoes” because all rich people have small penises.
“If it’s small and look’s funny, you better have the money,...

Matthew Whitaker, whom President Trump named acting attorney general of the United States in November, testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Friday. It wasn’t easy to get him there. Sensing resistance he may not cooperate, committee chair Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-ny) on Tuesday announced he was prepared to draft a subpoena to force Whitaker to testify so the committee could better understand how he came to sit atop the Justice Department, why he refused to recuse himself from overseeing the Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation despite ethics officials...

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker offered testimony Friday before the House Judiciary Committee where he was pointedly asked whether CNN was tipped off about the FBI raid of Roger Stone last month.
“Are you familiar from public reports or otherwise that a CNN reporter was camped outside Stone’s house when the FBI arrested him?” asked Republican Rep. Doug Collins.
“I am aware of that and it was deeply concerning to me as to how CNN found out about that,” Whitaker said.

As head of the Justice Department, Whitaker overseas the Special Counsel probe that ordered the raid and handed down the Stone indictments.
Collins then asked point blank whether someone at the Justice Department had tipped off CNN.
“It does seem concerning,” Collins said. “The timing doesn’t match up. It...

President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night was supposed to be about unity. Instead, it might have been the most divisive speech of his time in office. Trump tried, though. Kind of. “Together we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future. The decision is ours to make,” he said before insinuating that anyone who seeks to investigate him, opposes a border wall or disagrees...

Last December, Michael Flynn, the retired general and national security adviser to President Trump, pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his communications with Russia’s ambassador to the United States while he was working for Trump’s transition team. He’s since been cooperating with the special counsel’s office. A lot. On Tuesday night, Robert Mueller’s team filed a memo recommending that Flynn serve no prison time because of how helpful he was to the probe into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, in addition to two other investigations.

President Trump is in no rush to nominate someone to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general. Until he does, Matthew Whitaker will fill the role. Many have found this concerning, not just because of Whitaker’s demonstrated opposition to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, but because he doesn’t really seem to have that much of an issue with certain forms of crime. On Friday, the Washington Post reported that the former U.S. attorney from Iowa continued to promote a controversial patent company despite knowing that it was scamming its clients,...
