New Delhi, Sept 1 (Ians) The legendary bowler and former captain Wasim Akram seems highly impressed with the Pakistan team’s recent performances and credits their preparations for that success.
Babar Azam’s men have been playing very tough cricket in ODIs and T20Is recently clinched the World No.1 title. Akram doesn’t want the team’s performance to be burdened by being the favourites at the Asia Cup.
Pakistan headed into the Asia Cup after a clean sweep against Afghanistan and won their first match against Nepal. Talking to Fox Sports, Akram expressed his thoughts on the team and looked happy with the team’s performance.
“I like Pakistan to be underrated, underdogs. I don’t want them to go in as favourites. If you are a low-key team, you have a chance, and the Pakistan team has got the right preparation going,” Akram told Fox Sports.

Dubai, Aug 28 (Ians) Legendary Pakistani seamer Wasim Akram has said that the Indian squad for the Asia Cup is very balanced and they are a strong contender for the trophy.
“Team India is trying different things and new players, especially in the T20 format. Indian squad is very balanced. However, it won’t be easy for India as other teams are equally good.”
“Though the Pakistani team is top in ranking nowadays, I want to remind you that Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup last time, while India couldn’t even qualify for the finals. The India-Pakistan game is very important, but you can’t rule out other teams like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, even Afghanistan has a surprise element,” said Akram.
On the question of the Asia Cup being shifted from Pakistan after the objection by the Bcci, he said that politics and sports should be kept away from each other.

New Delhi, Aug 17 (Ians) After facing a severe backlash for leaving out Imran Khan from a promotional video celebrating the country’s cricketing achievements, Pakistan Cricket Board (Pcb) has released a rectified version with the 1992 World Cup-winning captain in it, and stated that the prior video excluded some clips due to its duration.
“The Pcb has launched a promotional campaign leading up to the Cricket World Cup 2023. One of the videos was uploaded on 14th August 2023. Due to its length, the video was abridged and some important clips were missing. This has been rectified in the complete version of the video,” Pcb wrote on its social media platform with the new video.
The Pcb first released a video on August 14 with the hashtag #BeyondJustOneDay, highlighting the contributions of some of their top players and the biggest moments in Pakistan’s cricket history, since 1952 when they played their first international game.

New Delhi, Aug 10 (Ians) Legendary West Indies batter Brian Lara believes young India fast-bowler Umran Malik is very young and has got a lot of years in him to play the game. At the same time, Lara added that quick pace should not be the only weapon in Malik’s arsenal.
In eight T20Is, Malik has played since his debut in June 2022, he has picked 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.48, but hasn’t played so far in the ongoing series against the West Indies.
In the preceding Odi series, Malik played two matches, but didn’t get a scalp against his name. In Ipl 2023, Malik played only seven matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, of which Lara was head coach, picking five wickets at an economy rate of 10.35.
“He will be a sensation, but very quickly he will have to learn that fast bowling really does not trouble the best players in the world.

Galle, July 16 (Ians) Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi was back to doing what he does best –- picking up early wickets as the pacer ran through Sri Lanka’s top order in the first Test. Sri Lanka, however, recovered from the early setbacks to reach 242/6 in 65.4 overs on a rain-truncated opening day.
Shaheen Afridi, who last played a Test match almost a year ago against Sri Lanka and was out of action for some months with multiple injuries, in the process picked his 100th Test wicket.
Sri Lanka opener Nishan Madushka was the victim, who couldn’t deal with the angle and movement Afridi produced. The 23-year-old added two more wickets in his eight-over long opening spell, squaring up Kusal Mendis for his second before removing the solid Dimuth Karunaratne.
At 23 years of age, only two other Pakistan bowlers had achieved the feat of 100 Test wickets – Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

New Delhi, June 27 (Ians) Legendary cricketer Wasim Akram believes Pakistan have enough quality in their ranks to be a major player at this year’s Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Pakistan are led by the No.1-ranked Odi batter in Babar Azam and have an experienced group of players to support him. Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman will be among the key batters, while Pakistan can turn to a pace attack that includes Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.
“We have a good side…a very good one-day side and are led by one of the modern-day greats in Babar Azam,” Wasim told the Icc.

London, June 5 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that although the conditions might be closer to Australia’s liking, it gives the Pat Cummins-led side only a slight advantage over India ahead of the World Test Championship final starting from Wednesday at The Oval.
“If you look at this venue you would think it’s a bit more like an Australian venue than it is an Indian venue. But when I thought back about that I thought well, hang on, last time India were actually in Australia they played our conditions really well, didn’t they?”
“You would think conditions-based only, this slightly favours Australia, but these are two teams that thoroughly deserve to be there. Whoever plays the best in those half an hour spells or stints through the course of every day’s play will end up walking well at the end of the week,” said...

Mumbai, May 28 (Ians) This is a story narrated by a journalist who had covered India’s tour of Pakistan in the 1980s — when the India-Pakistan rivalry was at its peak in Test cricket.
The tours were also known for sharing off-field bonhomie as the players used to stay in the same hotel, and would spend time together at the end of the day’s play.
In between two Test matches in that tour, a party was organised for the Indian cricketers and visiting journos with liquor flowing like water, despite it being banned in Pakistan.
Suddenly, the entire gathering was in chaos as there was a police raid on the premises and everyone was in a panic as consuming alcohol was a taboo and a grave crime in the Islamic nation.

When was the last time one has seen a cricket break-out with an innocent smile after reaching a milestone- say after reaching a century in the world of cricket? Well, conventionally when the cricketers around the world-before the advent of Suryakumar or rather an impacted entry of Suryakumar – would raise their bat towards heaven with a stoic look or a look of surrender!

New Delhi, Oct 28 (Ians) Pakistan fast bowling legend Wasim Akram strongly criticised captain Babar Azam for not being “intelligent enough” with team selection and omitting veteran middle-order batter Shoaib Malik from Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semifinals of the T20 World Cup are now hanging by a thread after losing to Zimbabwe by one run in their second Super 12 match at Perth on Thursday. They had lost to India in their opening match.
Their prolific opening pair of Azam and Mohammad Rizwan ‘idn’t fire and with 43 needed off 37 balls with seven wickets in hand, Pakistan’s middle order crumbled in spectacular fashion to lose the match on the final ball of the innings.

Lahore, Oct 16 (Ians) Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup-winning captain Younis Khan and their first Test captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar on Sunday were inducted into the Pcb Hall of Fame. The duo has joined Abdul Qadir, Fazal Mahmood, Hanif Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Zaheer Abbas in the illustrious group.
“The two gentlemen will always remain shining stars of Pakistan cricket and idols for the future generations,” said Ramiz Raja, Pcb chairman, in an official statement.
Younis was inducted immediately after becoming eligible as the Pcb Hall of Fame regulations require a player should have played his last international match, at least, five years before. Younis’ last international match was in Dominica in May 2017 — the Test which Pakistan won with six balls remaining to clinch their maiden series win in the Caribbean.

Mumbai, Oct 13 (Ians) With Jasprit Bumrah, and Deepak Chahar out of action due to injuries, the Indian pace bowling unit’s hopes has now on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh.
However, former Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram feels that Bhuvneshwar Kumar might struggle in the Australian conditions if the ball is not swinging and thus may not be as effective. Bhuvneshwar is the most experienced bowler in that squad with vast experience in white-ball cricket.
“India have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he is good with the new ball, but with his pace, if the ball is not swinging, he will probably struggle there. But he is a very good bowler no doubt, swings both ways, has the yorker. But you need pace in Australia,” Akram was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.
“You see that guy from Kashmir, Umran Malik, he is quick. India need to stick with him because he has got pace.

Karachi, Sep 23 (Ians) England left-arm seam bowler Luke Wood has said he is inspired by Wasim Akram and his country’s former quick Ryan Sidebottom, revealing that the words of wisdom from the Pakistani great had helped him take three wickets in the opening T20I on his debut in Karachi.
Wood returned superb figure of 3/24 in his maiden T20I appearance on September 20 as his efforts helped England win by six wickets. The 27-year-old, though, was expensive in the second T20I at the same venue on Thursday evening, as the brilliance of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan helped Pakistan win the second match by 10 wickets to level the seven-match series.
Woods became the seventh left-arm quick selected in England T20 squads this year.

Dubai, Sep 12 (Ians) Several top cricketers from across the world, including former greats from Pakistan, congratulated Sri Lanka for their amazing victory in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.
Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said Sri Lanka came into the final with the mind-set that they had to clinch the trophy.
A collective impressive performance by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan led Sri Lanka to the title with a clinical 23-run win. This is Sri Lanka’s sixth Asia Cup title — 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2022. After losing their opening game against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and then again Pakistan to clinch the 2022 Asia Cup.
“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. That was the mantra of this amazing Sri Lankan team so congratulations… better team won (the trophy) in the end,” wrote Akram.

Dubai, Sep 5 (Ians) Former cricketers Wasim Akram, Gautam Gambhir and Ravi Shastri questioned Indian left-handed batter Rishabh Pant’s shot selection in the Super Four match of Asia Cup 2022 against Pakistan, which resulted in his early dismissal at a crucial time in the first innings at Dubai International Stadium.
Pushed into batting first, Rohit Sharma and K.L Rahul came out all guns blazing in a 54-run opening stand. Reverting to their aggressive attacking approach, Virat Kohli top-scored with 60 off 44 balls, hitting four fours and a six. But the rest of the batters, including Pant, fell quickly in a bid to go big as India posted 181/7 in 20 overs.
Pant, who didn’t play in the Group A match against Pakistan as Dinesh Karthik was preferred, was included in the eleven for Sunday’s match over the veteran keeper-batter. Pant hit two fours in his 14 off 12 balls before reverse-sweeping straight to backward point off Shadab Khan.

Dubai, Sep 4 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes talismanic batter Virat Kohli looks a lot calmer after returning from the one-and-a-half break to return for Asia Cup 2022. Shastri added that the break taken by Kohli after India’s tour of England ended was a much-needed one.
Kohli, in a prolonged lean patch seen from him not scoring a century in international cricket since November 2019, began Asia Cup 2022 with a crucial 35 in the thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan in India’s first Group A match. He then scored an unbeaten 59 in India’s second Group A win over Hong Kong.
“Virat Kohli looks a lot calmer, he needed that break. When you are mentally tired, you are fighting against yourself. Your body tells you something to do, your mind tells you something to do, but you can’t take it. The break could have helped him. The fact that...

Dubai, Sep 4 (Ians) Pakistan captain Babar Azam has won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second Super Four match of Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
India have brought in Hardik Pandya (rested from the previous match against Hong Kong), Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi in their playing eleven in place of injured Ravindra Jadeja (out of the tournament due to right knee injury), Dinesh Karthik and Avesh Khan, meaning Rishabh Pant will keep wickets.
Pakistan, on the other hand, got in pacer Mohammad Hasnain in their playing eleven, replacing fellow fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani, who is out due to a suspected side strain.
“The dew could be a factor, that’s the reason we’re bowling first. We had a lot of positives from the last match against India. The message is to play positively,” said Azam after winning the toss.

In 13 matches from August 27 to September 11, across Dubai and Sharjah, the top six teams from Asia will be vying for the trophy which was established 38 years ago co-incidentally in the UAE.
The positioning of the tournament comes at a very interesting time. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the tournament, last held in 2018 in the UAE, to be postponed from 2020 to 2022. Then, the tournament was shifted to UAE from Sri Lanka due to the acute economic, political and social crisis in the island nation.
Now, with the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia almost 50 days away, the Asia Cup serves as a perfect platform and of extra importance for all five teams barring Hong Kong to test their preparedness for the silverware in the shortest format of the game.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain and left-arm fast bowling legend, reckons that not having Shaheen Shah Afridi due to a right knee ligament injury for the upcoming Asia Cup is a big setback for the Babar Azam-led side.
Since his international debut in 2018, Afridi has established himself as the spearhead of Pakistan’s bowling attack across all three formats of the international game. He has 47 wickets in 40 T20I matches and picked 3-31 in his four overs to set the base for Pakistan’s 10-wicket victory over India in the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup.

New Delhi, Aug 23 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has claimed that if talismanic India batter Virat Kohli gets a fifty in the side’s match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup on August 28, then the mouths of critics will be quiet for the rest of the tournament.
If he features in India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan, dubbed as the ‘greatest rivalry’ in cricketing world, it will also mark Kohli’s 100th T20I appearance.
Kohli returns to the Indian team for the Asia Cup in T20I format, having last featured for the national team during the tour of England in July. He was then rested for white-ball tour of West Indies and ODIs against Zimbabwe. Kohli has been in a prolonged lean patch, having not scored a century in international cricket since November 2019.
“No, I haven’t spoken to him but it’s not rocket science.

Mumbai, Aug 19 (Ians) Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris said he would love to see One-day internationals (ODIs) still retain their meaning in the cricketing world outside of the World Cups.
The growth of franchise T20 leagues has raised doubts over the future of 50-over game, especially after England Test captain Ben Stokes retired from the format citing unsustainable schedule.
“Yeah, that’s a tough one. This one I haven’t really worked out in my head and the reason for that is I really enjoyed one-day cricket. I felt it was a mixture of power which I like in terms of cricket. I think that just allows itself to fit in with other sports around the world.”

Auckland, Aug 19 (Ians) Former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Ian Smith believes pace-bowling stalwart Trent Boult’s recent announcement to release himself from the Black Caps’ contract signals the end of his Test career, and added that it would be a big loss for the country’s cricket.

Abu Dhabi, June 2 (Ians) Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam has said he will talk to Mohammad Amir and convince him to return to national fold after the pace bowler lashed out at current team management following retirement from international cricket late last year.
There has been speculation that Amir may shift to England and eye an Indian Premier League (Ipl) contract as a British citizen.
"When we talk, we will discuss what his issues [with the national side] are," Azam was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.com.

Karachi, May 30 (Ians) Pakistan's young bowling line-up needs guidance from left-arm pace bowler Mohammed Amir, who quit international cricket late last year, former Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram has said. The former Pakistan captain, though, added that Amir's decision to retire needs to be respected.
"I still think he should have a place in the Pakistan team. We have three white-ball World Cups in the coming years. I have been saying for a long time that bowlers come in packs. When you have a senior bowler in the pack, he can guide the young bowlers in pressure situations by talking with them. They can have quite an impact by giving them confidence and providing them with options," Akram told Cricket Pakistan.
The three white-ball World Cups that Akram is referring to includes the T20 World Cup later this year and next year as well as the 50-over World Cup next year.

Ahmedabad, Feb 26 (Ians) Handling the glossy new pink ball at the spin-friendly and dusty Motera pitch was akin to a spinner handling the new ball on a matting wicket, something that old Gujarat and Saurashtra spin bowlers have experienced over the years and decades.
A day after Axar Patel darted ball after ball, straight and quick into England batsmen and put them on the mat, former Gujarat left-arm spinner, 77-year-old Ashok Joshi told Ians: "He did well. Hit the ball hard on that pitch. That is what you need to do, bowl quick spinners on that surface. That England spinner, Jack Leach, did not hit the pitch hard enough."
Joshi, who played 81 first-class games through 1960s and 1970s during a period when competition for left-arm spinners for India team was intense, has played a lot on coir matting surfaces. He says on coir matting the ball turns...

New Delhi, Feb 7 (Ians) It was on February 7, 1999 when legendary Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble became the only second bowler in world cricket after England's Jim Laker to scalp all 10 wickets in an innings.
During the second Test of the two-match series against Pakistan, Kumble picked up all the wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla, now known as the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.
India had lost the first Test in Chennai by a slim margin of 12 runs and were in a must-win situation in the Delhi Test.
After posting 252 in their first innings, the hosts came out with an exceptional bowling performance to bowl out Pakistan for 172. In the second innings, Sadgopan Ramesh (96) and Sourav Ganguly (62*) scored gritty half centuries as India posted a 420-run target for the visitors.
The visitors got off to a steady start in their chase as openers Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar put on 101 runs for the first wicket.

New Delhi, Jan 20 (Ians) Former Pakistan players, including the likes of Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi, have lavished rich praise on the Indian team following their remarkable Test series win over Australia.
On Tuesday, India defeated Australia in the fourth and final Test to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side, despite the absence of their regular captain Virat Kohli and other key players, created history by becoming the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in over 32 years.
"Incredible Test & series win for India. Have not seen a bold, brave & boisterous Asian team on a tougher tour of Australia. No adversity could stop them, frontline players injured, & won after a remarkable turnaround from the depths of 36 all out, inspiring for others. Kudos India," Akram said in a tweet.
"Incredible performance India! Despite so many injuries and setbacks, India have pulled off an astonishing series win.

Lahore, Jan 3 (Ians) Former South Africa captain Ab de Villiers "literally started crying" when he played against Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif, according to the latter's former team mate Shoaib Akhtar. Akhtar also said that Indian batting great V.V.S. Laxman was also left clueless by Asif.
"Even bigger than Wasim Akram, the guy that I've seen bowling is Mohammad Asif. I have actually seen batsmen crying while facing Asif. Laxman once said 'how will I face this guy', Ab de Villiers literally started crying during the Asian Test Championship," Akhtar said while speaking on Sports Today.
Akhtar was talking about India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and felt that the latter is the smarest fast bowler after Asif.
"But I think after Asif, Bumrah is the smartest fast bowler presently. People were doubtful about his fitness in Test cricket, even I was watching him closely. He has a quick bouncer,...

Legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram feels that batting all-rounder Shoaib Malik, who will retire after the ongoing World Cup, can be given a farewell dinner, not a "farewell match".
Malik had last year announced that he will retire from Odi cricket after the World Cup which is going on in England and Wales.?
"Of course, he had announced that he will retire after the World Cup. Unfortunately, it has not ended on a high note. I think he deserved to end his career on a high as he has done a lot for Pakistan cricket," said Akram while speaking to a Pakistani journalist.?
"He did not play many matches in the World Cup. He got out twice on duck, but this can happen to any player. We should always remember his services as he has won Pakistan many matches. He is a nice guy, so let's send him a nice farewell,...
