Is the decade-long “The Voice” Instant Save curse about to be broken? Season 16 of “The Voice” recently concluded with Maelyn Jarmon from Team John Legend winning the latest title in the long-running NBC competition series. (Watch our video interview with Maelyn.) Although the songbird from Team John was Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win, it was Blake Shelton who coached three of the four finalists including country singers Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener. That brings us to an impressive statistic for Shelton. Not only has he won more titles than any other coach, with six total, but he’s also had more runners-up and finalists as well.

It’s official: There’s a curse on “The Voice” Instant Save.
Ever since this twist was created back in Season 6, no artist that’s been saved by Twitter or brought back via a wild card has ever gone on to win the show. Even more troubling, all of the Instant Save recipients have placed last in their respective finales aside from Britton Buchanan, who defied the odds to place second to Brynn Cartelli in Season 14. This year Andrew Sevener of Team Blake Shelton tried his hardest to break the curse but he, too, ended up placing last in Tuesday’s season finale.

Brynn Cartelli won season 14 of “The Voice” on Tuesday by edging out Britton Buchanan in one of the closest votes in the history of the reality competition series. A coupla weeks ago, I would’ve said that I was looking forward to the Finals of The Voice an extra lot in Season 14 because I really couldn’t predict who’d win. In Season 13, it had been obvious for a while ahead of the last performances that there was no stopping Chloe Kohanski, so there wasn’t a whole lotta suspense. This was going to be more fun. But after the Semi-Finals Results Show — in which Britton Buchanan had to sing for an Instant Save and Pryor Baird was shown the door — I’d come to think that I...

Blake Shelton is looking for his seventh win as a coach and he has two well-regarded artists (Spensha Baker and Kyla Jade) in the final. Kelly Clarkson is a rookie but has a strong contender in Brynn Cartelli while Alicia Keys is hoping that third time as a coach is a charm for her entry Britton Buchanan. The fourth coach, Adam Levine, is on the sidelines as his last act was eliminated on May 15.

The 14th champion of “The Voice” is set to be crowned on Tuesday, May 22 but according to our latest Gold Derby odds, it may not be the artist most fans were expecting. Team Alicia Keys‘ Britton Buchanan has been the favorite to take home the grand prize throughout most of the season, but things were shaken up during the Tuesday, May 15 live results show. The frontrunner hit a major roadblock when he failed to earn enough votes to yield a Top 3 finish, forcing him to battle it out for the final Instant Save of the season. Since the Instant Save made its debut in Season 6, no artist advancing to the finale by this method has ever won “The Voice.” In fact, they all finished in last place in their finales.

Season 14 of “The Voice” heads into its final week with just four contestants still standing. Of the four coaches, only Blake Shelton has two artists in contention. Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys are down to one apiece with Brynn Cartelli and Britton Buchanan respectively. And the fourth coach, Adam Levine, is out of the running.
Levine, who has won three of his previous 13 seasons as a coach on “The Voice,” lost the last of his artists (Rayshun Lamarr) on May 15 when the Top 8 was cut in half. Tuesday night on “The Voice,” rock singer Britton Buchanan from Team Alicia Keys narrowly escaped elimination after being forced to sing for America’s instant save along with Pryor Baird and Kaleb Lee. Britton picked Calum Scott‘s “Dancing on My Own” as his instant save song — a great choice as it earned enough live votes to send him through to the season finale, thereby eliminating both Pryor and Kaleb. Britton now joins Brynn Cartelli (Team Kelly Clarkson), and Kyla Jade and Spensha Baker (Team Blake Shelton) as the Final 4 artists on “The Voice” Season 14. “Th-th-that’s all, folks,” Tuesday’s episode of The Voice told four contestants ahead of Monday’s performance finale. And as we approached the Results Show, the quartet that I predicted to advance — Kyla Jade, Britton Buchanan, Brynn Cartelli and Pryor Baird — was still looking pretty solid. The wild card in the mix seemed to be Kaleb Lee, who’d not only had a great night Monday, but as of 8 am Et Tuesday, was outselling Pryor on iTunes. I still didn’t think he’d ultimately be able to pull off an upset and swipe a spot in the finals from Pryor,...

Six of the eight artists still in the running on “The Voice” saw their performance on Monday’s show make the top 10 on iTunes as of noon on Tuesday. That means each will get the benefit of the vote multiplier. That should help them avoid being in the bottom two, who will be eliminated right away when Carson Daly reveals the results on the May 15 episode.
That dubious distinction is likely to go to Jackie Foster and Rayshun Lamarr. Neither of these artists saw their tracks do well in the overnight sales figures from iTunes. Lamarr, who has had to sing for survival for two of the past three weeks, only sold enough of his version of John Lennon‘s classic “Imagine” to make it to #36. Foster foundered with her cover of Whitesnake‘s “Here I Go Again,” moving only enough units to get to #48.

Ahead of Monday’s Season 14 Semi-Finals of The Voice, I was feeling pretty confident that I already knew which singers would be making up the Final Four: Team Blake’s Pryor Baird and Kyla Jade, Team Alicia’s Britton Buchanan and Team Kelly’s Brynn Cartelli. (If they really do go to the Finals, that isn’t half bad, given my historically spotty track record as a prognosticator; when I made my initial prediction a month ago, I picked three out of those four but had subbed in Jackie Foster for Pryor — a mistake, I now suspect.) So the question...
