Rian Johnson is a man who knows what genres he wants to work in and sticks with them. Barring his second movie, the con caper "The Brothers Bloom," all of his feature films have been mysteries or science-fiction.
"Looper" is a bit of a combination of his favorite genres. On the sci-fi end, the movie is centered around time travel and there are other genre hallmarks like hover-bikes and telekinetic superpowers. While its story doesn't involve a murder mystery, the future of "Looper" does have some film noir flavor. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) lives in a grungy metropolis and is a hitman, killing mob targets from the future sent back in time. Like any criminal protagonist, Joe is looking to get out of the game, but first he has to do one last job: killing his future self (Bruce Willis). "Old Joe" did manage to find a normal life, but his past caught up to him.

With fall well underway and spooky season rearing its haunted head, now is the perfect time to curl up on the couch with a good movie. While horror typically reigns supreme this time of year, there are still plenty of incredible films well worth your precious viewing minutes, especially from the science fiction genre.
Regardless of how much we love heavy hitters like the "Star Wars," "Star Trek," and "Alien" franchises, sci-fi films encapsulate far more than just stories set in space. Time travel, neo-futurism, artificial intelligence, and other forms of speculative fiction all birth some of the most fascinating stories ever put to film. Fortunately for those looking to broaden their sci-fi horizons, the streaming offerings this October have a world of options. Here are five of the best sci-fi films available to stream this October, and where to watch them.

Although Warner Bros. Discovery has officially pulled the plug on release plans for “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt,” a followup to the 2020 animated film “Scoob!,” the film isn’t quite done with work yet. Producer Tony Cervone, who directed the first “Scoob!,” has revealed that the production is still recording the film’s score, despite the official cancellation.
On Saturday, Cervone shared a photo of his team working in a recording studio on Instagram.
“So what do you do when the movie is canceled, but you’ve already paid for the stage and the musicians?” Cervone wrote in the caption. “You record the damn score!”

For over half a century, Scooby Doo and his friends have been a staple of cartoons, as well as, for a time, in live action adventures on the big screen. Now, the talking dog and pals are back in Scoob!, which is part origin story, part adventure tale (no pun intended). How does the animated canine function in CGI? Well, pretty good, actually. This is a fun, sometimes strange, and even emotionally satisfying movie. What could have been stale and recycled never comes off as such. The film just offers up some good family friendly fun. Especially these days, and at this specific moment, what more can you ask for? The film is a new Scooby Doo adventure, while also functioning as an origin story for the Mystery Inc. group that children of all ages have adored. As a boy, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (voice of Will Forte) is a lonely kid,...

In David Lynch, we trust. That should be what all Twin Peaks fans are thinking right now. What he and Mark Frost have given us in the 16th episode in this return is nothing short of perfect, and is sum of all of the parts that have come before it. Now next week, we have the two episodes that will hopefully cap off one of the best television shows to ever make it to the screen.
After Dougie’s (Kyle MacLachlan) encounter with the electricity outlet an old friend finally makes his return and has one destination in mind; Twin Peaks. Meanwhile Evil Coop and Richard Horne (Eamon Farren) follow co-ordinates to a rock, with dire consequences for Horne. While all this is happening, Diane (Laura Dern) finally remembers what happened at her last encounter with Cooper.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Twin Peaks: The Return” (Season 3) through Episode 16, “Part 16.”]
David Lynch’s persistence is paying off.
It’s not like after hearing some fans and critics complain about lengthy, redundant scenes (like five minutes of floor sweeping) and/or characters arcs (“Dougie”), the writer and director — as well as his partner in crime, Mark Frost — could change course midway through “The Return.” But those questioning whether or not the two creators are in complete control of their story — after being given absolute artistic license to make “Twin Peaks” however they see fit — well, those doubters can rest easy.

“Part 16” illustrated Lynch’s precise vision more clearly than anything prior, and it did so with a whole lot going on. From tulpa mania to Agent Cooper’s (Kyle MacLachlan) recovery, the penultimate week of “Twin Peaks” featured quite a bit of development that quickly pushed the story forward.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.A man walks into a bar—after cursing out Gene Kelly (because most of the time we don't feel like singin' in the rain). The bar, by the way, is named "Max Von's," surely after Erich von Stroheim's rabidly devoted butler Max von Mayerling from Sunset Blvd (1950). Of his employer, silent-film diva Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), Max once said, "Madame is the greatest star of them all." No more proper locale, then, for a star entrance: "Diane," says FBI forensics specialist Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) to a platinum blond beauty nursing martini and cigarette. Around turns Diane Evans, the heretofore unseen confidante of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), and played (of course, how could there be any doubt?) by Laura Dern.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Woo boy, Twin Peaks fans.
If you thought the first two hours of the Twin Peaks revival were weird, you haven't really seen anything yet.
Let's start with what is easily the David Lynch-iest sequence of the show so far.
The Purple Spaceship
After being expelled from the Black Lodge and taking a quick pit stop in the glass box in New York City, real Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) finds himself in a weird purple spaceship thing with a woman who is listed in the credits as Naido (Nae Yuuki). Her eyes are melted shut, which lends some weight to the idea that eyes are important in Twin Peaks -- Ruth Davenport (Mary Stofle) was missing an eye and it also appeared that Evil Cooper (MacLachlan) shot Phyllis Hastings (Cornelia Guest) through the eye.
The woman eventually disappears and Cooper encounters the shadowy head of Major Garland Briggs (Don S. Davis), who utters the phrase "blue rose...

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

Last year I began a tradition to help my fellow Bfca members choose more wisely when it comes to the "Young Performer" category by sharing an eligibility list. My belief is they often choose poorly because this category gets no pre-voting discussion whatsoever and it can be difficult to even think of who is eligible. That said, you can safely expect to see Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) nominated because they have leading roles in films that have been discussed. But who else should or could be nominated?
Ballots go out to the Bfca at any moment so here's a cheat sheet to help them vote. The category is Under 21... (but it should obviously be adjusted to 17 and under. Remember that year when the winner came from the sexually explicit Blue is the Warmest Color? That's what you get when you have a category with...

There won't be a third season of Extant but this isn't the end of Halle Berry's relationship with CBS. The summer series has been cancelled but Berry is now executive producing a legal drama that's in development for the network.

Extant‘s Season 2 premiere falls back on the age-old cautionary tale: While the astronaut’s away, the robotics pioneers will play!
Ok, that’s not the most important takeaway from the CBS drama’s season opener, which finds Halle Berry’s Molly confined to a psychiatric institution in the wake of some very terrible events. But her husband John’s affair stings nonetheless, especially given the way his involvement in the story ends during the course of this episode. (At least the clues to his infidelity were well-laid —apparently, just like Julie! — last season.)
Oh, and the aliens are still out for us.

Picking up six months after the events of last year’s finale, CBS’ Extant decides one thing within the first few moments of its second year: do everything again. Revisit the strife between Molly (Halle Berry) and husband John Woods (Goran Visnjic), but make it bigger; re-do the we-may-lose-Ethan plot, but make it permanent; re-establish Molly as a brilliant scientist, but bring back the slight frayed edges of her psyche lost once the first season cemented her fears as reality. Season 2 succeeds in some departments with this redux angle — especially in a character that gets offed from nearly word go — but it doesn’t fix the show’s most glaring issue: it’s just not intriguing enough.

The Season 2 premiere of Halle Berry space thriller “Extant” on CBS seems to set up the Oscar winner to tell a more Earth-bound tale of government conspiracies and pedestrian alien threats. Berry’s formerly high-flying astronaut Molly Woods, the victim of an alien sexual assault in Season 1, saved the planet along with her advanced-artificial intelligence son Ethan (Pierce Gagnon) in the first season finale. What goes up must come down Molly learns after returning to Earth. Ethan safely tucked his consciousness away in a cloud — the hackers’ delight, not the fluffy, sky-bunny type — after he blew up the alien...

Of all the “lands” at Disneyland/Disney World (the others are Frontierland, Adventureland, and Fantasyland in case you’ve forgotten), Tomorrowland holds the most promise to an impressionable youth. With visions of Buck Rogers rayguns and Jetsons flying machines, the park promises more than it delivers, with its slow “people-movers” and static displays of smart homes and fashions of the future. Except for Space Mountain—a truly incredible roller coaster ride—this park is at once the most visually stimulating, and the most unexciting. The new film Tomorrowland shares some of these qualities, but is the end result a wild coaster ride of a popcorn movie, or a rehash of stale ideas about a utopian future?
Britt Robertson (Under The Dome, The Longest Ride) plays Casey, a smart and capable teenager living in a single-parent household consisting of her caring father (Tim McGraw) and not-so-annoying little brother (Pierce Gagnon,...

I love ambition. When you’re a filmmaker with some measure of clout, it always makes sense to really shoot for the stars, as it were. Not everyone does it, but director Brad Bird sure does. On Friday, Bird’s new flight of fancy Tomorrowland opens in theaters, hoping to capture the imaginations of families throughout the world. After the wild successes of The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Bird could basically do whatever he wanted, so he teamed up with scribe Damon Lindelof in order to make this unique tale happen. Not everyone agrees with me, but on my end, I’m thrilled that they did. Tomorrowland is something very singular and enjoyable. In short, Tomorrowland is about imagination fueling the future. Without giving too much away, there is an actual place called Tomorrowland that basically features the world’s best and brightest. George Clooney plays an inventor...

Director: Brad Bird; Screenwriter: Damon Lindelof; Starring: George Clooney, Britt Robertson Hugh Laurie, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw; Running time: 130 mins; Certificate: 12A
Taking its name and inspiration from the futuristic themed area at Disneyland, Brad Bird's latest blockbuster mines similar territory to his earlier films The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, a pair of dazzling animations that expertly blended heart, spectacle and nostalgia.
Tomorrowland isn't quite up to the level of those aforementioned offerings, but as Hollywood's biggest movies become ever more reliant on being "dark and gritty", brownie points should go to Bird for countering all that by coming up with something that's buoyantly optimistic. It all feels suitably on-brand for Disney, who'll be hoping Tomorrowland hits big at the box office to open the door for further theme park-to-film adaptations (Ryan Gosling and Guillermo del Toro's Haunted Mansion is incoming).

★★★☆☆ Zach Braff's second feature, Wish I Was Here (2014), was famously - or perhaps infamously - financed partially through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. Braff's reasoning for this was to spare his project from the compromises that would come with a studio production. That Braff got to do exactly what he wanted is very evident in the resulting film. Aidan Bloom (Braff) is a struggling actor, supported by his loving wife Sarah (Kate Hudson), while his father, Gabe (Mandy Patinkin), pays for Aidan and Sarah's two children - daughter Grace (Joey King of White House Down (2013) and TV's Fargo) and son Tucker (Pierce Gagnon of Looper (2012)) to attend an expensive private Hebrew school.

CBS is set to revamp its summer sci-fi drama series "Extant" for its second season. Casting changes are in order, though Halle Berry is still onboard to play Isea astronaut Molly.
The first season saw her returning from a year in space and mysteriously pregnant, the second will deal with her efforts to track down her alien son who is threatening the human race.
Actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Michael O’Neill are out of the show, while Goran Visnjic's husband and Camryn Manheim's co-worker characters are being reduced to recurring status and will return only for the first few episodes of the season.
Staying on as full series regulars are Pierce Gagnon as her android son and Grace Gummer as a Humanichs Project assistant. New series regulars will be added as well, the changeover due to the different storyline.

When news came out that CBS renewed Halle Berry’s Extant, everyone wanted to know if she would return for a second season. Now fans know that she will. It has been confirmed that she will be back and the focus for the second season. It will follow her character Molly on her quest to find her child. However, she is the only main star returning for good. Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim will have smaller roles throughout the season, while Hiroyuki Sanada and Michael O’Neill will not. Pierce Gagnon who plays Ethan, the son of Halle’s character has been promoted as a series regular. No other casting news has been released yet. Fans can expect a summer premier.
This is great news for Halle. We wanted to see her succeed and while we are shocked that she is staying with TV, it does give her more time to be mom.

Last summer, over 8 million people tuned in to watch Academy Award-winner Halle Berry try to unravel her missing memories in the futuristic thriller “Extant.” When astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns home from a year-long space mission, she finds it difficult to reconnect with her husband John (Goran Visnjic) and their uncanny valley defying robot son Ethan (Pierce Gagnon). Oh, and she’s immaculately pregnant with what might be an alien baby. So there’s that. As Molly struggles to come to grips with her home life and unexpected pregnancy, things begin to fall apart at work when it becomes clear she wasn’t the only one who had a mysterious space visitor. When CBS and Amblin Entertainment set out to create the world of “Extant,” it was imperative the world looked both familiar and alien at the same time. As if the future were right around the corner and yet...

Each year when my Bfca ballot arrives I stop in my tracks, stumped, when I get to "Young Performer". Categories that aren't Oscar correlative are often trickier.
Oh dear. How uneasy I feel..."
That's not because you're free of predicting (anyone trying to predict with their own ballot really ought to find a new profession -- criticism: ur not doing it right) but because it's a subsection of acting you probably haven't been discussing at all. You suddenly remember that you need to have been considering it with as much seriousness as you have made your other selections.
I imagine that Ellar Coltrane, the now 20 year old star of Boyhood, will be tough to beat since this category is for the 21 and under set. But even if the category were adjusted downward to 17 and younger (which we strongly support as a rule change -because it's always weird when an adult...

A Merry Friggin’ Christmas, on the surface, looks like your typical holiday movie, with a dysfunctional family getting together for the first time in years, but director Tristram Shapeero and screenwriter Michael Brown give us something a bit more than just another father and son reconciliation story.
Joel McHale stars as Boyd Mitchler, a loving husband and father of two who decides to spend Christmas with his parents. However, this means that he’ll be reunited with his alcoholic father Mitch (Robin Williams in one of his last performances), who years ago ruined the magic of Christmas for Boyd when he told him Santa Claus doesn’t actually exist. Since then, the two have been very distant, and Boyd is intent on keeping the spirit of Christmas alive for his own son, Douglas (Pierce Gagnon), for as long as he can.
Things hit a major snag, however, when Boyd realizes...

Like all untimely movie star deaths, you’re not really gone until the last movie you finished before your death is released. The tragic passing of Robin Williams this past summer was marked by this website and others by recognizing several of the actor’s greatest comedy hits. Sadly, A Merry Friggin’ Christmas will not join their ranks.
The set-up is simple. Boyd Mitchler (Joel McHale) traces every bad thing wrong with his life back to the horrible parenting of his drunken dad Mitch (Robin Williams). Having grown up to become a successful Chicago hedge fund manager, Boyd overcompensates with his own son, Doug (Pierce Gagnon), to make sure he gets every bit the magical Christmas that Mitch denied Boyd through bourbon-fuelled candour. Obviously Boyd’s put a lot of time and distance between him and his father, but when his younger brother, Nelson (Clark Duke), calls him up to...

Blight Christmas: Shapeero’s Debut is Not the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
There’s a reason why Tristram Shapeero’s film debut A Merry Friggin’ Christmas isn’t premiering around the same holiday it’s titled for, and that’s mostly because it isn’t destined to be regarded as noteworthy even in this built-in celebratory regard. Languishing in the same euphemisms denoted in its title, Shapeero, a seasoned television vet, makes it clear that sights are set in family friendly mode, though this script from first time writer Michael Brown would have been better served on network television with a less aggressive title, so it could be marketed to an appropriate audience of lackluster milksops that require nothing more than tuning in to watch items littered with faces they recognize regardless of the neutered content coming out of their mouths.

The mysteries will continue on season two of Extant. CBS has renewed the Halle Berry TV show for another season. It's believed there will be another 13 episodes and they will air next summer.

It's finale time! Here's Holly's review of Extant's last episode...
This review contains spoilers.
1.13 Ascension
I told you not to press the big green button. It paid off! As I said last week, I didn’t really think it mattered what happened in this week’s season finale of Extant, as I and probably a great number of its viewership have disengaged at this point. I was expecting, honestly, a really dissatisfying deus ex machina with little green men or such; what I got instead was actually a really well done finale and just a good hour of TV.
We got a lot of answers, which again, I wasn’t expecting. I’ll start, though, with what we still don’t know - a surprisingly short list. The most glaring absence that I could see was Yasumoto - we didn’t see him at all. Same with Sparks.

Producer Michael Shamberg will accompany Braff at the festival. Shamberg is set to receive the Career Achievement Award prior to the premiere on Sep 26 at the Cinema Corso.
Wish I Was Here stars Braff as a man at a crossroads, which forces him to examine his life, his career, and his family. The film co-stars Kate Hudson, Joey King, Pierce Gagnon and Adam Braff, who co-wrote the screenplay.
The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, was released in the Us in July and will receive its theatrical release in the UK this weekend.

Zach Braff cemented himself as a filmmaker to watch with his debut feature Garden State in 2004, but it's taken him a decade to make follow-up Wish I Was Here. So why the long wait? After initially searching for funding and full creative control within the studio system, the former Scrubs star turned to Kickstarter after feeling resistance from the industry who'd lavished praise on his first film.
Digital Spy caught up with Braff on the eve of Wish I Was Here's UK release to discuss his eagerly-awaited movie comeback...

After the acclaimed dramedy stylings of Garden State, it's taken Zach Braff a decade and some Kickstarter crowdfunding to get his second feature (as director) off the ground and in the end, Wish I Was Here looks destined to disappear up its own backside. Apparently, Braff is still struggling with the same issues; again playing a failing actor trying to get in touch with his real feelings, in the real world. But at 35 years old, the 'little boy lost' routine is more pathetic than sympathetic.
As co-writer of the script (with brother, Adam), Braff gives himself a major stumbling block to get over in making Aidan a worthy hero. The guy fancies himself as an astronaut saving the world while away from his fantasies,...
