Big change on Masterpiece’s popular drama Miss Scarlet and the Duke.
Stuart Martin, who played William “The Duke” Wellington in the previous four seasons, will not return for season 5. Kate Phillips will return as Miss Eliza Scarlet for a fifth season of investigations, and the series will be retitled Miss Scarlet.
“It has been such an incredible joy to bring Duke to life through Rachael’s beautiful, brilliant writing, and to get to play him for the past four years,” said Martin in a statement. “But it felt like the time was right for Scarlet to explore new stories and challenges for now, as the show continues to grow and evolve. I will miss working with my amazing partner in crime Kate and the rest of our brilliant family and team, but I’m excited to continue following Eliza and her escapades as a huge fan and newly enrolled Scarleteer!

Stuart Martin sympathizes with fans of PBS’s Miss Scarlet and the Duke who’ve been waiting years for the title characters to admit they have feelings for each other. The actor – who plays William “The Duke” Wellington in the period mystery series – confessed that he wants “just one kiss” between his character and Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips).
Stuart Martin definitely wants Eliza and William to get together in ‘Miss Scarlet and the Duke’
Eliza and William’s “will-they-or-won’t-they” dynamic continued in the third season of Miss Scarlet and The Duke. In the most recent episodes of the show, the pair’s longstanding friendship came under strain when William began a relationship with Eliza’s childhood nemesis Arabella (Sophie Robertson). While William thinks he can maintain his friendship with Eliza while romancing Arabella, both women have made it clear that won’t work. And in the finale, Arabella bluntly...

Last year PBS gave audiences the charming Victorian-era mystery series “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” Though akin to other PBS and BBC shows like “Ripper Street,” creator Rachael New’s mystery series feels so charming “because Being Feminist (capitalization intended) isn’t what it sets its focus on.” Season 1 concluded with Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) and William “the Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin) possibly embarking on a romance — which, for a television show, can be a blessing or a curse.
The two certainly had a flirtatious bond, but a relationship could affect Eliza’s desire for a career, given William’s disdain for Eliza’s work. And in the second season premiere, which aired Sunday on PBS, it seemed like the pair were together. Then abruptly, William and Eliza realize a relationship isn’t in the cards for them and break up.

It feels like a million years ago that we were all wrapped up in the murders and mysteries being solved by Victorian lady detective Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) in the PBS series “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” Maybe that’s because the series dropped in January 2021, right as the world was turning upside down because of the political upheaval amid the coronavirus.
“It’s difficult sometimes to remember where your head was at,” Phillips tells IndieWire, but the British actress finds it fascinating that the themes Eliza and crew were talking about on the show — racism, misogyny, and the problems of the oppressed — only became more relevant as time went on. As the world outside took on a darker sheen, what audiences connected to so intensely was the series’ old-fashioned, nostalgic sensibilities.

If you look on social media you’ll find a lot of love for PBS’ latest detective series, “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” The series, about a female detective in the Victorian era —played wonderfully by Kate Phillips — has captured not just those already fans of the public broadcasting’s elegant slate of mysteries, but fans seeking smart entertainment. Now that the entirety of Season 1 is available on the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel, there’s much anticipation about where the show goes from here.

The Victorian era has been shaped by its men, from Sherlock Holmes to the dastardly deeds of Jack the Ripper. That’s not to say that inserting a woman into this world immediately revolutionizes the premise. In fact, there have been numerous female detectives created for the period, with the plotlines generally revolving around how strange and unusual she is for entering a man’s arena. Maybe that’s why Rachael New’s PBS mystery series, “Miss Scarlet and the Duke” feels so charming, because Being Feminist (capitalization intended) isn’t what it sets its focus on.

BritBox has teamed up with the BBC as well as a number of broadcasters across Europe to launch a Spain-set crime drama from the writer behind The Good Karma Hospital and Delicious.
The broadcasters have ordered The Mallorca Files (w/t), created by Dan Sefton, and produced by Cosmopolitan Pictures, the production company set up by Ben Donald and Misfits firm Clerkenwell Films.
The ten-part drama is set amongst the expat community on the sunny Spanish island and features a British and German detective clashing over their very different approaches to policing the island. While self-confessed introverted Brit Miranda Blake takes her career seriously, German Max Wolf is a classic extrovert and unashamedly unconventional. The two characters battle it out to solve crimes in the sun-drenched setting.
The show, which will begin production in November, will air in daytime on BBC One in 2019 with all ten episodes dropping on to...
