The pair of original series promises to reveal “previously untold aspects” about the story of former Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher, who in 2018 was charged with committing war crimes after he had posed for a photo with a corpse in Iraq. Members of his platoon had broken ranks and accused Gallagher of murder; he was ultimately being acquitted on all but one minor count and in the fall of 2019 was pardoned by President Trump.

“Bigger than the game” is a phrase that gets tossed around quite often during major sporting events. The World Cup is certainly no exception, as national soccer teams, regardless of who they’re playing, have come to symbolize more than just a group of athletes. Through their resiliency in competition and the pride they instill in fandoms, sports teams are almost never just a collection of jerseys.
“Nossa Chape,” the newest documentary from “The Two Escobars” filmmakers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, recognizes this fact almost immediately. About Chapecoense, the team born from a western Brazilian city that grew to national and international prominence, the film wastes no time showing how both team and community are intertwined. It also doesn’t take long for “Nossa Chape” to detail the tragic aftermath of a plane crash that killed 71 players and club staff in a late November 2016. Rather than treat this cataclysmic event as a prolonged,...

The list of executive producers who have worked on films in Fox Sports’ “Magnify” documentary series reads like the lineup of an all-star revival of the old MTV show “Rock N’ Jock.” EPs on previous and forthcoming installments include LeBron James, Common, Dwyane Wade, Chance the Rapper, and Kevin Durant. The newest addition to the series, director Andrew Renzi’s “They Fight,” boasts Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Derrick Brooks, and Michael Finley in exec producer roles.
Fox announced the acquisition of “They Fight” last week. The film tells the story of an after-school boxing program in Washington D.C.’s Ward 8 — one of the city’s most economically challenged areas. The movie fits the mission of the “Magnify” series — leveraging the power of star athletes and entertainers, as well as Fox’s television platforms, to push eyeballs to off-the-beaten path socially conscious sport stories.

‘Give Us This Day’ Filmmakers Talk The Overlooked High Crime In East St. Louis In New Docu – Tribeca
Lying just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo is East St. Louis, Illinois, which has for some years held the tragic distinction as the city with the highest homicide rate per capita in the United States. The shroud which has mostly kept East St. Louis off the mass media spotlight despite its unwanted title is lifted in directors Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s new At&T Audience Network documentary, Give Us This Day, which had an early sneak in New York just days after completing a final edit as part of AwardsLine’s screening series.
Give Us This Day tracks a year in the lives of three police officers and three residents living in East St. Louis, the city with the highest homicide rate in the United States. This documentary explores the humanity in each of these six lives as they intersect, develop and transform.

In 2009, Ar Rahman was honoured with two Oscars awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire and was also a nominee in the year 2011. It could be a twin win for Indian music maestro once again at the Academy Awards as his work for Pele: Birth of a Legend has found a spot in an initial list of Oscar contenders for the year. 'Ginga', Rahman's acclaimed number from the 2016 biographical film, is in the Oscar race too. He has been included in a 'long list' of 145 scores in contention for a nomination in the Original Score category for the upcoming 89th Academy Awards. It is part of the 91 songs, which are competing for a spot in the final nominations for the Original Song category. Rahman, who is about to embark on his Intimate Tour in the UK, is bringing his unique style to the big screen. Widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, Pelé’s biographical film focuses on the Brazilian footballer’s early life. Directed and written by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, the film is centered on the relationship between the character Pelé and his father.
The partnership sees football’s greatest talent meet Indian cinema’s most prolific composer. Known for his distinctive mix of eastern classical music with modern electro, world music and traditional orchestral arrangements, Rahman has sought inspiration from regional Brazilian sounds with international sensibilities.
Commenting on the lead song Ginga, Rahman says: “We were very careful not to go overboard. The song definitely doesn’t sound Indian, but gives the movie the energy which it needs. It’s not too regional but for the whole world.

It may be called Pelé: Birth of a Legend, but Jeff and Michael Zimbalist‘s film is really about Ginga soccer and Brazil at risk of losing its soul. The climax depicts the 1958 World Cup with the country’s unexpected run to the final on the back of a seventeen year-old hobbled by a sprained knee, but it’s not his goal scoring that inspires confidence. His ability to run around the pitch in complete ignorance of the Europeans’ formation game lights a fire that burns deeper than technique. Vicente Feola (Vincent D’Onofrio trying a Portuguese accent) was hired to rebrand the team after a debilitating loss in 1950 and poor sportsmanship in 1954 by invoking that European way, but Pelé (Kevin de Paula) refused to forget his identity.
Ginga goes back to the African slave heritage of Brazil’s black community — explained as a fighting style and spirituality all but outlawed outside the soccer field.

Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's "The Two Escobars" was one of the best films from the first round of Espn's "30 for 30" documentary series, not to mention a hit on the fest circuit, playing Tribeca, Cannes and the Los Angeles Film Festival. The doc explored how the lives and deaths of Columbian soccer player Andrés Escobar and drug lord Pablo Escobar were intertwined. The brothers are currently working on "Pele," a biopic of the Brazilian soccer legend that they co-wrote and directed, but they've also maintained their relationship with Espn, co-directing the first "30 for 30" short "Arnold's Blueprint," as well as "Youngstown Boys," which it was announced today will be the next feature-length film in the series to air. "Youngstown Boys," slated to premiere Saturday, December 14th at 9pm after the Heisman Trophy Presentation, is a look at the class and power dynamics in college sports as told through the stories of...

If I'm not mistaken, my introduction to soccer (or football) legend Pele was the 1987 film Hotshot. Like any ten-year-old I wanted to run out and do bicycle kicks, but the same year North Shore came out and I wanted to run off and be a surfer. The film is directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist and stars Kevin de Paula as Pele, Diego Boneta, Colm Meaney and Seu Jorge with Vincent D'Onofrio and Rodrigo Santoro in final negotiations to join the cast. Pele tells the miraculous story of the legendary soccer player's...
