[This story contains spoilers from Afterparty season two, episode seven, “Ulysses.”]
Peter Atencio’s Hollywood chops have mainly been planted in the garden of comedy for his more than 20-year career — Key & Peele, the Jean-Claude Van Johnson series and this year’s satirical mobster film The Machine, to name a few.
But when old friends Phil Lord and Christopher Miller invited the 40-year-old helmer to direct what he was told would be one of the most complex and challenging episodes of the second season of The Afterparty — Apple TV+’s whodunnit murder mystery series — he tells The Hollywood Reporter that a more dramatic approach was needed to get to the core of the funny.
How serious can directing comedy get? Atencio breaks it down for The Hollywood Reporter in a recent Zoom interview.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, was a box office disaster, pulling in just $25 million worldwide… which is a shame, because the movie is a lot of fun. Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!
Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

Should every TV show be a musical?
Maybe, depending who you ask (Yasper from “The Afterparty” we suspect is strongly in favor). There’s no denying the power of musical numbers, scores, opening credits, or just the right needle drop to propel a television scene from enjoyable to legendary. Moments like this were so bountiful in 2022 that IndieWire decided to pick the best ones as we comb through the best of this TV year so far. Below, in order of premiere, are the most memorable musical moments from 2022 TV.
1. “Peacemaker”: Opening Credits
It’s been a wondrous year for opening credits, none more bizarre and perfect than “Peacemaker.” James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” spinoff had a tough job with its HBO Max debut, spotlighting one of the only white male characters from the 2021 film and making a case, somehow, for the floundering DC Extended Universe.
But “Peacemaker” did that and more,...

CBS All Access’ “Why Women Kill” set its first-season action in three distinct time periods: the 1960s, 1980s and present-day, promising a titular payoff in each time period by the end of the season. In the finale, titled “Kill Me as If It Were the Last Time,” creator and showrunner Marc Cherry crafted an intricate slow-motion montage that weaved the pivotal deaths together across timelines. While the Pasadena mansion had previously been the only character that carried over from storyline to storyline, this montage saw all the central characters sharing the same space. Although it was staged like a play, it was not done entirely in one shot; director David Warren covered individual pieces and performers in closeup, with their period-accurate set dressing behind them. The sequence includes a tango, a tussle on the staircase and a fistfight that turns into a gun showdown — and, of course, the answers to...

Netflix is taking the early lead at this year’s Emmys race, with six wins, thanks to the Television Academy’s juried award winners for animation, choreography, interactive programming and motion design, which were announced on Friday.
The outstanding individual achievement in animation category, a “juried” prize that means several, one or no winners could be named, wound up with eight honorees this year: Five from Netflix and three from YouTube.
Also landing its first-ever Emmy was Twitch, the live streaming platform popular in the gaming community and owned by Amazon. Twitch landed an Emmy for outstanding innovation in interactive media, for “Artificial.”

After Crazy Ex-Girlfriend takes its final bow this week, the cast is coming out for one last curtain call.
Friday’s series finale (The CW, 8/7c) will be followed by “Yes, It’s Really Us Singing: The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Concert Special!” a live performance taped last month at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre, with the cast taking the stage to sing a selection of Crazy Ex tunes. Lots of fan favorites will be in there, from “Let’s Generalize About Men” to “Gettin’ Bi” to “You Stupid Bitch,” but condensing four seasons of musical comedy down to less than an hour was a daunting task indeed.

Kathryn Burns spent four years choreographing the musical numbers on the CW comedy series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (and won an Emmy in 2016 for her efforts), but before the show signed off for good, she also had the opportunity to choreograph a live concert — variety-show style.
Titled “Yes, It’s Really Us Singing: The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Concert Special!,” the hourlong program will air after the April 5 series finale. Burns had only a couple of weeks after the final scripted episode wrapped to get the cast into dancing shape for reimagined versions of songs that ranged from first-season to final-season numbers.
“Normally a music video has one star and I can hire backup dancers, or I can spend eight hours just working on the lead actor’s performance,” she says. “With this, all of the co-stars, guest stars or regulars — they’re all the ensemble.”

It’s the last season before the cast of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend takes its final bow. The cast and creators of the musical comedy took the stage at PaleyFest to reflect on everything from the spark that lit the fire for the show to saying goodbye to the popular CW series — and talked about a possible musical stage show based on the series.

The third season premiere of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” opened with a song entitled “Where’s Rebecca Bunch?” to address the second season’s cliffhanger: how and when Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) would react to being stood up on her wedding day. “It was way more plot-driven than we normally do,” executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna says of the vibrant musical number. “We had to explain a lot about the world and reset the world because it was right at the beginning of the episode. She didn’t really have the nerve to go full-[on] revenge mode, and the song tells you she’s disappeared, everyone’s looking for her, and she’s holed up in a hotel, depressed, gathering the resolve she needs.” And it was all done as a period piece.

Each year brings more series than many thought possible. Most of them want Emmys. Some of them even deserve them. So, in the peakest of peak TV climates, who can blame the marketing teams behind them for getting creative with their For Your Consideration campaigns?
“I think that in this very crowded television landscape, you have to differentiate yourself and it’s always been about creative ideas and figuring out ways to trigger people with what you’re promoting,” says Rich Licata, the veteran awards campaigner who pioneered the idea of episode screeners when he was at HBO in the early 1990s.
He says that strategies including boxed mailers and For Your Consideration Q&A nights are no longer enough — especially the latter, now that there’s such a demand to hold them at the TV Academy’s North Hollywood headquarters that the venue had to institute a lottery system.

Pamela Adlon spent months planning the perfect surprise for the Season 2 finale of “Better Things” — and not just in the series, but in real life, too. Pages from the script were hidden, cover stories were established, and secret weekend rehearsals were held, all to capture an authentic reaction from actress Mikey Madison when her character got a very special graduation gift from her onscreen mother and off-screen showrunner, Adlon.
Then her back went out.
“I didn’t know it at the time, but I’d never had a feeling like that,” Adlon said in an interview with IndieWire. “I slipped my disc! And I actually shot another 12 hours that day.”
Why? In part, because Adlon didn’t realize the extent of her injury at the time, but it’s also because she wasn’t just acting in the scene. She also directed the episode, as well as every other entry...

TV shows usually aren’t able to turn a discussion of two seasons of television into a thoroughly enjoyable low-key cabaret night. But that’s precisely what the cast and crew of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” did on Wednesday at the Television Academy in North Hollywood.
Gathering in front of TV Academy voters for their 2017 For Your Consideration event, the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” cast performed eight songs from the show’s sophomore season, weaving in a discussion of the various challenges that the latest run of episodes provided for the whole team. In a surprise move (that, in retrospect, is the only way that one of these things should start), writer/co-creator/star Rachel Bloom introduced the evening’s participants via a re-worked version of the show’s song “I Have Friends.”
Though the audience had trouble getting the song’s distinct clapping rhythm in unison, stars Vincent Rodriguez III (Josh Chan), Donna Lynne Champlin...

The CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” earned an Emmy nomination for its choreography, and the show’s dance master is looking forward to actually getting to celebrate if she wins the award. “I would do a little dance,” Kathryn Burns recently told TheWrap of how she would react to winning. “When I was nominated, I just had surgery and I could only finger-wave, I couldn’t even laugh. I’m fine, I’m totally fine, it was only minor surgery, but I think I would do a full-body jig.” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” follows Rachel Bloom as Rebecca Bunch, a New York City...
