- James grew up in Vermont the oldest of three siblings (younger sister Rebecca Perkins, and younger brother Caldwell Perkins). From an early age he excelled at music composition and recording, and expressed great interest in the creative arts. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he received a B.A. in International Business and Spanish in 1999. He later obtained an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 2004.
Since 2000 New York has been his home, but he has spent extended time living abroad in France, Spain, Venezuela, and Colombia.
In 2007, James wrote and directed his first film, Pardon My French, a short comedy about urban speed dating. His subsequent short mystery entitled Lyre Liar won the 48 Hour Film Project's Best Film and Best Directing awards in 2008.
