- Museeuw and his wife Veronique Souvagie divorced in 2009. They married in 1991 and have two sons, Gianni (born 1992) and Stefano (born 1997). Youngest son Stefano turned semi-professional cyclist, roughly following in his father's footsteps.

- Announced his retirement on Flemish television on October 6, 1996 in a fit of disappointment over losing in the 1996 Paris Tours race, stating that the UCI Road World Championships the following week would be his last race. He became UCI road world champion and continued his career thereafter.
- Though undisclosed, his two sons may have been named after two professional cyclists he competed against. Namely the Italians two-time UCI Road World Champion Gianni Bugno and sprinter and cobbled classics specialist Stefano Zanini.
