- Had a .249 BA with 959 hits in 1110 games with the Boston Bees (1937-1938), Cincinnati Reds (1939-1940), Pittsburgh Pirates (1940-1944), Philadelphia Phillies (1945-1946), and New York Giants (1946). National League All-Star (1943, 1944).
- Traded to Joe's team, the New York Yankees, in February 1939 to complete a trade with the Boston Bees (now the Atlanta Braves), but never played for them, being sent to the minors, then traded to the Cincinnati Reds that August. Ironically, the Bess were managed by Casey Stengel, who later became the Yankees' manager in Joe's last 3 seasons.
