The 16th annual Boston Underground Film Festival will once again terrorize all of New England with a wide selection of international atrocities that span the globe from Japan to Belgium to the fest’s own backyard. The fest will run March 26-30 at the Brattle Theater.
The fest will open with the supernatural teen comedy All Cheerleaders Die by the dynamic directing team of Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson, which will then be followed by the cult 1974 Japanese nunsploitation flick School of the Holy Beast by Norifumi Suzuki.
Other feature films screening at the fest include: The American warrior documentary My Name Is Jonah by Phil Healy and Jb Sapienza; the pre-apocolyptic party of Doomsdays by Eddie Mullins; The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears by Belgian extreme filmmakers Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani; the collegiate conspiracy of Jerzy Rose’s Crimes Against Humanity; Jeremy Saulnier’s twist on the revenge thriller,...

Animator Peter Sluszka talks about creating his sequences for Youth In Revolt, as well as the work that didn't make the final cut...
One of the highlights of the now-on-dvd drama Youth In Revolt, starring Michael Cera, was the animated sequences in the film. They were put together by Peter Sluszka, and we had a chance to fire a few questions in his direction, which he's kindly answered right here...
What kind of brief were you given for the animated sequences of the film?
First I was given the script with notations for where Miguel Arteta and Michael Cera wanted animated sequences. Then I presented proposals on how to approach each segment.
It's a terrific opening for the film that you've put together. Can you take us through what was involved, and how you had to shape and mould it together?
We knew that there should be a slick transition...

Chicago – Some actors are so brilliantly in command of their abilities that their efforts are routinely taken for granted. Michael Cera’s utter failure to hit a single false note onscreen has led some to believe that he’s simply playing himself, as if playing oneself was somehow easy to begin with.
Cera’s comic persona is as impenetrable as Woody Allen’s. He embodies vulnerable neurotic teenage angst with an authenticity unmatched by any actor in recent years. His best lines are delivered under the breath and at odd angles, striking the funny bone with impeccable deadpan timing. After Hollywood tried (and failed) to turn him into a commercial commodity, with “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and the embarrassing “Year One,” it’s a relief to see Cera in a role that proves he has a range beyond the persona he has mastered.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0

Youth In Revolt Directed by Miguel Arteta Mean-spirited screwball comedy Youth in Revolt , based on C.D. Payne's 1993 novel, follows Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a cynical, sex-obsessed 16-year-old who, while on vacation in a trailer park, meets and falls in love with beautiful, intellectual teen rebel Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). The only things standing in the way of the consummation of Nick's first love is Sheeni's poetry-writing ex-boyfriend Trent (Jonathan B. Wright) and her religious zealot parents (M. Emmett Walsh and Mary Kay Place) . It barely needs to be said that Michael Cera has perfected his socially awkward, asexual, nerdy adolescent shtick. For some, it might be tiring to see the same actor in the same role once again trying to lose the same virginity, and Youth in Revolt is more of the same. As Nick, Cera doesn't do much to elevate the material to anything other than a typical coming-of-age story,...
