A few main cast members have left ABC‘s The Rookie over five seasons. Mercedes Mason, who played Zoe Andersen, and Afton Williamson, who played Talia Bishop, exited the series during and after the first season. But the most heartbreaking departure came when The Rookie killed off Titus Makin Jr.’s character Jackson West in the season 4 premiere.

The Rookie introduced Titus Makin Jr.’s character Jackson West during the series premiere. He, Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan, and Melissa O’Neil’s Lucy Chen were all rookies assigned to the Mid-Wilshire station in the LAPD. Jackson’s training officer was Angela Lopez, and the two developed a close friendship over their time together.
Jackson also trained in the academy alongside Nolan and Chen, so they had a close bond.

The war between La Fiera and Cesar Madrigal has started on The Rookie Season 3 Episode 13, and in a cemetery, no less.
That would seem convenient if they didn't have to drag the bodies to the morgue first before burying them.
But as Nolan pointed out, they got lucky during this firefight as there were no innocent victims, but that won't last so the LAPD had to step in.
I was a bit surprised when Sgt. Grey sent Angela over to try and reason with La Fiera. It seemed like such a useless endeavor. Cesar killed Sandra's son; there was no way she was going to let him live.
But La Fiera wanted two things, and Lopez could get her at least one of them.
She wanted the recording of Señor Madrigal making the deal to turn over control of running his operation to her. Cesar might never accept it...

Officer John Nolan is no longer known as the oldest rookie. Well, he's not only known as the oldest rookie.
Other cops refer to him as the "trouble magnet" and with reason, as Nolan was taken hostage on The Rookie Season 3 Episode 5.
But the hostage situation and ensuing lockdown felt like filler compared to the real drama going on between Officers Stanton and Jackson West.
Don't get me wrong, a huge bomb in a truck outside of a police station would normally feel like the focal point of any installment. But we knew that the odds of Nolan being killed or the bomb going off and destroying the station was slim to none, so it was difficult to drum up a lot of concern.
Jackson's situation was much different. He was willing to put it all on the line to get a racist, dangerous cop off the street.

The following contains major spoilers from the Feb. 14 episode of ABC’s The Rookie.
This week on The Rookie, Officer Jackson West (played by Titus Makin) went “all in” in his quest to take down his To, Doug Stanton (Brandon Routh). Alas, just as he set out to do so — by first apologizing to Stanton for his slip-up that got him a blue page, and then begging to keep riding at his side — the precinct was shut down due to a bomb threat. Meaning, if West and Stanton took a potentially problematic call, anyone who might respond to offer backup...

When last we tuned into ABC’s The Rookie, Officer Jackson West’s plan to get the goods on bad cop Doug Stanton hit a sinister snag. Will West now put his nascent career on the line, in the name of a greater good?
With Sgt. Grey’s blessing and counsel, West (played by Titus Makin) continued riding with Stanton (Brandon Routh) as his To, provided that available allies join in on any radio calls that could turn problematic due to Stanton’s racist attitudes and aggressive tactics. But when Jackson, during one such call, left evidence unattended for fear...

When will Stanton's reign end?
It doesn't seem as if that's going to happen anytime soon, no matter how hard some of the gang worked to catch him onThe Rookie Season 3 Episode 4.
And now, Jackson's career could hang in the balance thanks to Doug Stanton.
I have to give a shoutout to Brandon Routh, who genuinely seems like a lovely person and plays some of the noblest and lovable characters from Superman to Ray Palmer. Doug Stanton is a repulsive piece of garbage and prompts a simmering rage on sight.
Jackson is in an unfortunate position here. And you have to give the series credit for showcasing how difficult it is to catch a bad cop. Tim broke it down beautifully. Once they get beyond their rookie status, the level of protection they have is surreal.
My last student didn't ask a lot of questions, and he was a "brotha.

Exclusive: The Rookie is modifying its production schedule after a number of positive Covid-19 tests.
Deadline understands that the ABC cop drama is going to reduce the shooting schedule for the rest of December as a result of the new cases, which were discovered through its strict health and safety protocols.
The positive tests came in the production’s Zone A, which includes cast, meaning that the L.A.-shot show, which is produced by eOne and ABC Signature, had to reconfigure its plans.
“The Rookie season three has moved to an alternate production schedule with limited production still underway, seeing the winter hiatus starting earlier than expected for most of the cast and crew following confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 in Zone A through a routine screening, in adherence with strict health and safety protocols,” a spokesman told Deadline. “Together with our partners at ABC Signature, eOne wishes to...

Based on the real-life account of the first American Soldiers to respond to the attacks on September 11th, 2001 (from the book "Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of Us Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan" by Doug Stanton), 12 Strong takes a fairly simple stride down war-film lane, which bypasses the gut-punch emotions or political message overtures that... War films generally come in two varieties: a gray introspective look at its emotional and psychological cost and black and white jingoistic propaganda. The former is generally acclaimed as award worthy while the latter is dumped during winter months so its target audience of NRA-loving Republicans in American flag tees has something to watch during a drama-heavy, liberally slanted awards season. (I jest.) This doesn’t, however, inherently mean one route is “better” despite valid arguments to the contrary. And for those who vehemently disagree, it doesn’t mean the propagandized route is without any value. Films of this ilk are easy to be disregarded as two-dimensional, but a refusal to understand their value regardless is just plain lazy. Because while you may not “learn” anything, others find themselves healed.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer thinks big, and his war movies can range from noisy idiocy (Pearl Harbor) to near brilliant (Black Hawk Down). Luckily, 12 Strong sees the value in substance as well as spectacle. Based on Doug Stanton's 2009 bestseller, Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rod to Victory in Afghanistan, this rough-hewn drama has a compelling, mostly untold story to relate. After 9/11, an elite Special Forces unit comprised of 12 Green Berets led by Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), were dropped into Afghanistan in response to the attack.

Deadline reports that actor, comedian, and Fox football mainstay Rob Riggle has been cast alongside Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon in Horse Soldiers, Nicolai Fuglsig’s upcoming film about American Special Forces infiltrating Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11. Riggle joins a cast that also includes Michael Pena, Austin Stowell, and Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film is based on Doug Stanton’s book about Special Forces secretly fighting on horseback against the Taliban in the days after the September 11 attacks.

Deadline is reporting Ant-Man and War on Everyone star Michael Pena has come attached to Horse Soldiers, the Nicolai Fuslig-directed pic.
He’ll join Chris Hemsworth and Midnight Special‘s Michael Shannon for the Afghan war drama, one which chronicles the true-life tale of an untrained captain who directs a team of Us Special Forces into a rugged, mountainous area of the Middle East in the weeks after 9/11. According to Deadline, Pena has clinched the part of Diller, a member of Mitch’s (Hemsworth) squad that was “assigned to join forces with a Northern Alliance warlord to fight against overwhelming odds to drive out the Taliban.” Showcasing tremendous bravery during his time on the front lines, his character winds up spearheading an attempt to severe one of the Taliban’s primary supply lines.

Trevante Rhodes has found his first role since breaking out with his starring turn in indie sensation Moonlight. The actor is in negotiations to join Chris Hemsworth, Michael Pena and Michael Shannon in Horse Soldiers, Jerry Bruckheimer Films/Black Label Media's true account of a U.S. cavalry charge that took place in Afghanistan against the Taliban. Based on the book by Doug Stanton, the events took place weeks after 9/11, when a team of U.S. Special Forces went to Afghanistan and were to take over the city of Mazar E Sharif. When I first heard that an upcoming movie had the title Horse Soldiers, I immediately imagined it as a Fantastic Mr. Fox-style animated project about horses who served in some sort of military unit. But alas, that's not actually what the movie will be.
THR reports that Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon will star in this true story about U.S. Special Forces members who were "deployed to the mountainous regions of Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11 to flush out the Taliban...on horseback." Peter Craig (The Town, Blood Father) and Ted Tally (The Silence of The Lambs) wrote the screenplay, which is based on Doug Stanton's book.
That's some strong writing talent, and if nothing else, I'm interested to see how Hemsworth and Shannon interact on screen because they're two actors I never really thought would end up working together. They're sort of an odd pairing (but...

Michael Shannon is an actor in demand. Earlier today, we brought you the news that the Midnight Special star had closed a deal to join The Current War, a true-life drama the historic battle between George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison; now, Shannon has added another project to his bustling slate, and this time he’s headed for the front lines.
He won’t do so alone, though; Deadline reveals that the God of Thunder himself Chris Hemsworth has also saddled up for Horse Soldiers, the Nicolai Fuslig-directed war drama that has set up shop at Black Label Media. Little is known about the core premise of Fuslig’s drama, only that it takes place shortly after the events of 9/11 when Hemsworth, Shannon and their U.S. Special Forces team are ordered to “a rugged, mountainous region of Afghanistan.” Lifting inspiration from Doug Stanton’s novel, the jury’s still out...

Michael Shannon and Chris Hemsworth have signed on to be Jerry Bruckheimer’s Horse Soldiers. Deadline reports that the pair will star together in the mega-producer’s upcoming film of that name, about the early days of the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan, when horse-riding U.S. operatives worked with native warlords to oust the Taliban from its control of the country. The film is based on a book about the soldiers’ exploits, written by Doug Stanton.
Horse Soldiers is being produced by Bruckheimer and Black Label Media, and directed by acclaimed Danish photojournalist Nicolai Fuglsig, a relative newcomer to the world of making films. It presumably won’t be going into production for a while, though, since Hemsworth is currently fulfilling his franchise duties on the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, and Shannon is starring in The Shape Of Water with Guillermo Del Toro, before taking a just-announced role on The ...

Michael Shannon’s got major projects in the works. Yesterday, it was reported that the actor would be joining Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Current War,” and now Deadline announced that Shannon has jumped onboard another drama, “Horse Soldiers,” alongside Chris Hemsworth.
Co-financed by Black Label Media, the film is based on Doug Stanton’s book of the same name and follows a U.S. Special Forces team and their untested captain who are sent to a rugged, mountainous region of Afghanistan in the weeks after 9/11. The team is assigned to work with a Northern Alliance warlord to fight against overwhelming odds to drive out the Taliban. No details about Shannon or Hemsworth’s characters were revealed.

Lionsgate and prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer have set sights on relative newcomer Nicolai Fuglsig to helm upcoming wartime drama, Horse Soldiers.
Deadline has the scoop, noting that the Danish filmmaker – perhaps best known for his work as a photojournalist – will work in tandem with Black Label Media and screenwriters Peter Craig and Ted Tally in bringing the actioner to life. Rooted in post-9/11 Afghanistan, the feature film charts the trials and tribulations left facing a CIA crack team who plot course for the Middle East in a bid to dismantle the Taliban.
An early logline for the project reveals that it’ll focus on “a small band of special forces soldiers who rode on horses to confront the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to 1, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential to defeat their opponent throughout the country.

Adrian Pasdar is perhaps best known for his television roles in shows such as Heroes, Judging Amy and more recently The Lying Game.
He's also voiced several superheroes, including Hawkeye and Captain America, and provides the voice of Iron Man in the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon and the upcoming Hulk And The Agents Of Smash animated project.
But not many people will know or remember that his first acting role was in the 1986 classic Top Gun, which is to get a 3D reissue in 2012. Director Tony Scott had been so impressed with 19-year-old Pasdar's audition that he wrote the part of Chipper especially for him.
A sequel is also in the works and Pasdar now says he would love to be part of such a project.
Speaking in a recent interview with the Press Association, Pasdar says: "It would be great to be in a sequel to that film if it's done and done well.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been out this week with pitching a film adaptation of Doug Stanton book "Horse Soldiers" says Variety.
The true story revolves around twelve elite special forces soldiers and CIA operatives who secretly invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 and helped rebel fighters capture the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and topple the Taliban.
The project is said to be akin to the Bruckheimer-produced "Black Hawk Down". Nicolai Fuglsig is attached to direct from a script by Ted Tally and Peter Craig.
Disney bought the rights for Bruckheimer in 2009 but got rid of it to embrace their family film mandate. They also ditched the WW2 project "Killing Rommel" which Bruckheimer has also ultimately given up on.

A lot of conservatives were huffing and puffing in the 1990s when Disney bought Miramax Films and started distributing non-family rare like “Pulp Fiction.” Well, here’s hoping you’re happy: Miramax is dead and a few years back, Disney CEO Rich Ross announced that he would no longer be greenlighting any film that wasn’t family oriented and/or a franchise, not to mention that nothing coming out of the mouse house would be rated R. Because of Ross’s strict policy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is left looking like a champion of the arts in comparison. A few years back, Ross killed Bruckheimer’s proposed Randall Wallace-scripted, WWII epic “Killing Rommel,” and now Bruckheimer’s going around Hollywood hat in hand, trying to get some of that “War Horse” money for his own equestrian military epic “Horse Soldiers.” The film is based on the Doug Stanton non-fiction book about “12 elite special.

Because, you see, there’s that movie coming out this month about a horse.
Moving on from my non-joke, Deadline reports that mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is pitching Horse Soldiers, an adaptation of Doug Stanton‘s book that’s been scripted by Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Tally (and granted a Peter Craig rewrite), with Nicolai Fuglsig set as director. Based on a true story, the book tells the tale of “12 elite special forces soldiers and CIA operatives who secretly invaded Afghanistan after 9/11.” Soon, the soldiers “arrived on horses and helped Afghan fighters capture the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and topple the Taliban.” Disney isn’t going with their favorite producer on this one, however, because of the content, which is too violent for their liking; it’s noted that the material contains “the same level of warfare” as Black Hawk Down.
Kind of ironic, really, that Disney would push away what...

Here’s something you don’t often see, producer Jerry Bruckheimer out pitching a movie package. I’m told the Disney-based producer has been out this week with a pitch for Horse Soldiers, an adaptation of the Doug Stanton book that has a Ted Tally script rewritten by Peter Craig, and Nicolai Fuglsig attached to direct. Disney bought the book for Bruckheimer back in 2009. The true story revolves around 12 elite special forces soldiers and CIA operatives who secretly invaded Afghanistan after 9/11. They arrived on horses and helped Afghan fighters capture the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and topple the Taliban. The project has the same level of warfare evident in the Bruckheimer-produced Black Hawk Down, which got made by Sony and Revolution. It’s not the first Bruckheimer project that Disney jettisoned because it didn’t fit Rich Ross’s family film mandate. In June, 2010, Disney put in turnaround an adaptation of...

According to Variety, Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have acquired the screen rights to Doug Stanton’s book Horse Soldiers. The book will be published by Scribner in May.
The story revolves around a brave group of special forces and CIA operatives who secretly enter Afghanistan on horseback following the 9/11 attacks. Against all odds, the group helps Afghan fighters capture the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in an effort to bring down the Taliban.
Bruckheimer, who has experience with fact-based war projects (Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor), will produce the film.
It sounds interesting, let’s hope it’s more Black Hawk Down and less Pearl Harbor.
