10 Iconic Dance Numbers in the Millennium ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Hindi Film Music has witnessed paradigm changes in the Millennium. Songs are now promo tools and barely situational, and lip-sync numbers predominantly dance songs. On International Dance Day (April 29), I choose the 10 truly magnificent dance numbers that will always live on. And yes, I have not included Naacho Naacho from Rrr as it was technically not a Hindi movie!
Budtameez Dil / Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor outdid himself in this song, reviving memories of his father, Rishi Kapoor’s mastery of dance! The musical was enriched immeasurably by this by Benny Dayal-Shefali Alvares song, composed by Pritam with delightfully crazy lyrics (Paan mein pudina dekha) by Amitabh Bhattacharya. And if you thought the dance had a hint of Michael Jackson, please remember that legend was its choreographer Remo D’Souza’s idol.

2016’s Happy Bhag Jayegi was a very successful romantic comedy about Harpreet Kaur (played by Diana Penty) who ran away from her wedding with Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Shergill) to find herself in Lahore taken in by Bilal Ahmed (Abhay Deol). In 2018 Happy is back, but this time with Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role in Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi. Set in China this time, there’s bound to be plenty of machismo, the girl coming out on top, some great one-liners and a strong Punjabi vibe. Sohail Sen has been asked to pen the score for this album, so it will be interesting to see how musically he brings Punjab to China.
Where else to begin this soundtrack but with some classic bhangra in Swag Saha Nahi Jaye. Shadab Faridi, Neha Bhasin and Shivangi Bhayana are all asked to bring people onto the floor with this bhangra set to...

2014 covered an expansive genre of music with a strong focus on complimenting the respective film’s tone and background rather than opting for safety of conventionalism. Sneha Khanwalker re-defined the rom-com landscape with Khoobsurat while Highway and Queen mapped two very different but unforgettable coming of age journeys with equal parts skill and heart. Read on to find out which albums. Read on as Bollyspice unveils the top 10 albums of 2014.

The soundtrack of Kill Dil was a labour of love from Shaad Ali, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Gulzar. It is clearly apparent from the brilliant mix of tracks delivered. The orchestrations and melodies employed were some of the best ones from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The range of vocal artists ranged from the veterans like Sukwinder Singh to novices like Nihara Joshi making the album all the more enjoyable. Ashutosh Gowariker whose Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar created cinematic history has floundered badly with his last 2 films What's Your Raashee and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se. One major reason being attributed to the debacle of these two films was the music. Though Sohail Sen put up a brave act, Rahman's presence was sorely missed in Ashutosh's last two films. Realizing the melodic lacuna, the director has now gone back to A R Rahman who did sterling soundtracks for Ashutosh's Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar. Rahman would be doing the music for Gowariker's Mohenjo-Daro. Say a very reliable source, "Ashu met Rahman Sir recently. They both missed one another when they didn't work together. In fact Ashu very desperately wanted Rahman for What's Your Raashee after Jodhaa Akbar. But Rahman was busy with his international projects. And Raashee required a dozen songs. After waiting for months for Rahman Sir to give his nod,...

One of our favorite tracks on the Gunday album is Tune Maari Entriyaan and composer Sohail Sen told us, “It was a tough task to to create ‘Tune Maari Entriyaan’ as its the only song in the film where all three lead actors are dancing and having fun. In what appears to be the first of its kind, Yash Raj Films' Gunday will have a full Bengali song. And we aren't talking about phrases and sentences here and there but a full song in Bangla. Composed by the talented Sohail Sen (whose interesting music was an integral part of Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee? and Ali Abbas Zafar's Mere Brother Ki Shaadi) the Bangla song has been sung by Bappi Lahiri and is filmed on Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Says Sohail Sen, "I can't reveal too much about it. But it's a full-on masti number filmed on Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Bappi Uncle has sung for both of them." Sohail whose father is veteran music composer Sameer Sen, knows Bappi Lahiri from the time he was a child. Says Sohail, "Since Gunday is set in Kolkata, director Ali Abbas Zafar and I thought that...

Yrf’s Gunday, starring Ranveer Singh & Arjun Kapoor, along with Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan in lead roles, will see Bappi Da in action! It’s hard to imagine Hindi music of the 80’s without Bappi Lahiri. Even harder to fathom pop music from Kolkata minus its beloved Bappi Da. So, when director Ali Abbas Zafar decided to make a cabaret song for Gunday, set in Calcutta of the 80’s, Bappi Da was an inevitable choice. It brings together Yrf and Bappi Da for the very first time.
“For months we were trying to come up with this Cabaret song, but a good melody was eluding us”, says Sohail Sen, the composer of Gunday. “It is meant to be Priyanka Chopra’s introduction song in the film, it had to be special.” Then one day, a melody fell into place. It was bang on. It’s a number that combines jazz with brass and drums,...

Looking back at 2012 song-ically, it certainly was a year of cool sounds, new voices, groovy and groovin’ beats and over all some killer tracks. Many of the songs brought a new vibe to the music of the movies, songs flavored with new influences, and songs that we never would have thought we would hear in a Bollywood flick. There were classic beats that got us up and dancing not to mention the grooves of today that got us to move to the music. We met some new singers we can’t wait to hear more of and some of our favorites blew us away with outstanding vocals. 2012 was full of surprises and we enjoyed so many of them, 50 in fact and every single note! As always we loved these songs when they first came out but once we saw them in the movie we loved them even more! Check out...

The first half of 2012 has featured some of the best soundtracks in quite some time, with music directors creating innovative songs that kept us hooked. However, even though we may love gems like Gangs of Wasseypur or From Sydney with Love, and biggies like Cocktail and Rowdy Rathore, the lineup for late 2012 looks just as promising. Fall 2012 is definitely Khan season, with Shah Rukh’s untitled film with Yash Chopra, Aamir’s home production of Talaash, and Salman’s humongously awaited sequel to Dabangg all being released. Despite this, the latter part of the year is going to have a gratifying number of heroines dominating: Sridevi, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta each have their films releasing during September and October. Vanessa and I had such a lively conversation on what’s got us excited for the rest of 2012. Here’s some of the soundtracks we cannot wait to hear!

We teased you last week but now we have the full version of ‘Banjaara’, Sohail Sen’s flirty fun track with an Irish Celtic flavor that makes it totally uniquely cool. Of course, Sukhwinder Singh’s perfect match to the beats of the acoustic guitars, bouzouki, darbuka, drums, strings, bagpipes and the accordion just adds to the track and makes it even better!

The forthcoming Yash Raj Films venture, Ek Tha Tiger has created Indian Cinema history with the overwhelming excitement surrounding its release. Ek Tha Tiger sees the newly crowned king of the box-office, Salman Khan, join forces with Bollywood mogul Yash Raj Films, under the direction of Kabir Khan (New York).
Khan’s prior box-office smashers, namely, Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard have music to match (critical analysis aside). Sohail Sen, fresh from the success of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, holds the reins to this mere 5-track album and briefly shares the control with guest-composers Sajid-Wajid (Dabangg). Vocal talents comprise of Wajid (‘Jalwa’ – Wanted), Shreya Ghosal (‘Tere Meri’ – Bodyguard), K.K ( Desi Boys – Title Track, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan – Title Track), Sukhwinder Singh (Dabangg – Title Track, Singham – Title Track) and Mohit Chauhan (‘Saada Haq’ – Rockstar) amongst others. Naturally, three remixes by Joshilay fill this short album.
