The eighteenth entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Mubi will be showing Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street (1945) from December 30, 2016 - January 28, 2017 in the United States. In Fritz Lang’s masterpiece Scarlet Street (1945) it is never simply a matter of characters seeing or not seeing something important—although that can furnish the first, basic level of the intrigue. It is also a matter of what people really understand of what they see—which, in turn, has much to do with what they, consciously or unconsciously, project onto what is before their eyes. So, while the film is full of moments where its central figure, the ‘poor sap’ Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson), has his eyes averted, or doesn’t hear someone creeping behind his back, it also explores his willful blindness: he looks at Kitty (Joan Bennett) and sees an innocent angel where,...

Family Guy reaches new heights of hilarity in this outrageous collection of 22 episodes, including fan-favourite Into Fat Air, where the Griffins rock Mount Everest, plus the comedy jackpot Roads to Vegas and the milestone 200th episode Yug Ylimaf, in which Brian and Stewie develop a curious case of reverse aging thanks to a time machine foul-up. It’s a complete season of laughs with celebrity guest voices Johnny Depp, Jon Hamm, Sofia Vergara and more!
The thirteenth season of Family Guy – well I say say season 13 but if you’re familiar with the DVD situation here in the UK (some of the earlier seasons, which ran over 13 episodes, were split into two “seasons” by Fox UK), this isn’t actually the thirteenth but actually season 11 - is very much a hit and miss season, there are a...

Sometimes it's hard for comic book fans to separate the worlds of the printed page with that of the film and television ones. I'm just as guilty as anyone of wanting the two to co-exist together, even though it really isn't possible. Some would argue, but I found Smallville to be an entertaining and satisfying adaptation of the traditional Superboy tale. The show consistently showed the trials and tribulations of growing up as a normal teen, not to mention one with secret super powers which kept you from fully opening up to even your closest friends.
Smallville: Season Eleven Volume Two: Detective continues to take the TV series into the young adult working world of Clark Kent and Superman. The Man of Steel comes up against another caped avenger and his female sidekick when Batman and Nightwing travel to Metropolis to seek out the murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents.

Last week, Twentieth Century Fox show Family Guy broke through the 200 episode barrier with “Chris Cross”, the 201st episode of the long running show.
Show creator Seth MacFarlane was at the centre of attention as he hosted the Oscar’s on Sunday, and voices many of Family Guy’s main cast members such as Peter, Brian and Stewie Griffin. His rendition of “we saw your boobs” at the start of the award show, in which he made reference to the likes of Angelina Jolie, who have bared all in a number of films, was just one example of how funny Family Guy can be.
The show, which has been nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards, winning four times, is known for its surreal, occasionally dark brand of humour, and isn’t afraid to court controversy with its sometimes high levels of graphic violence and crude references to celebrities.

Chances are the average "Family Guy" viewer had no clue who Anne Murray was ... up until the Sunday, Feb. 18 episode.
In "Chris Cross," Stewie became obsessed with Anne Murray's "Snowbird." The obsession soon spread to Brian and the two traveled to meet the Canadian singer in order to learn the true meaning of the song. Murray voiced herself.
Creator Seth MacFarlane took to Twitter to explain the inspiration behind the storyline.
Watch Stewie hear "Snowbird" for the first time and meet Anne Murray below and then give the song a listen yourself.
"Family Guy" airs Sundays, 9 p.m. on Fox.

"Chris Cross" was proof that one should now doubt Family Guy.
Indeed, while last week’s “Valentine’s Day in Quahog” looked like that it was further evidence of the show’s decline, this installment was so bad that it’s a contender for the worst episode of the series.
I mean, this was simply unfunny on every level.
The story felt hackneyed. Chris had to be Meg’s slave? Gee, that’s never been done before. And then Chris ran away. Getting away to Herbert’s should have been a source of much comedy, but the premise was bungled from the start, with the only funny part being a gag involving Herbert bringing his bed closer to Chris’ bed, then taking it away when he farted.
Its conclusion didn’t feel satisfying, either, thanks to Chris basically just treating Herbert like a jerk and leaving. The genesis of the story,...

Ten seasons for a television show about a super hero is a great track record to hold. Many people believed a show like Smallville might last three seasons at the most. How far can you take the concept of a high school-aged Clark Kent dealing with his new found super powers and saving his hometown from "meteor freaks?" Apparently a long way. When the show ended, fans and DC Comics weren't satisfied and an eleventh season via comic book was launched.
There are many positives to continuing Smallville on the printed page and digital domain. The comic book medium frees up the story lines from the confines of budgets and deadlines directors and show runners had to face throughout the ten year run of the show. It's easier to draw Superman flying through space battling giant monsters than it is to produce it for a live-action television show. The only...

Ultravox have released a new album with frontman Midge Ure for the first time in 26 years. The electronic pioneers released the band's 11th studio album Brilliant on Monday (May 28), the first with Ure since 1986's U-Vox. Ure revealed that the group's current line-up (Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross and Warren Cann), perhaps the most well-known, decided to work on new material after they reunited for a tour in 2009. "It's been an interesting process. If we sat and talked about this two years ago, it wasn't on the cards," Ure told BBC Breakfast. "We got together two years together to tour, and during it we talked about the possibilities [of recording a new album]. "Once we got the idea of how to process this, we went ahead and started." The frontman (more)...

Blu-ray Release Date: Feb. 28, 2012
Price: Blu-ray $29.95
Studio: Kino
The classic 1945 film noir Scarlet Street remains one of legendary director Fritz Lang’s (Metropolis) finest American films.
Joan Bennett gets under Edward G. Robinson's skin in Scarlet Street.
When middle-aged milquetoast Chris Cross (Edward G. Robinson, The Stranger) comes to the aid of damsel-in-distress-ish, street-walking bad girl Kitty (Joan Bennett, Man Hunt) one rainy New York night, he plunges into a whirlpool of lust, larceny and revenge–the kind that one finds in any great film noir. Chris’s obsession with the irresistibly vulgar Kitty grows as her nasty pimp boyfriend (Dan Duryea, The Woman in the Window) gets involved, ultimately corrupting and humiliating Chris and turning him into the kind of man he never wanted to be. Will justice triumph? Well, yes…and no.
Available on disc in various qualities from a handful of suppliers over the years, Kino...
