Pop culture has long mimicked pageantry. It’s reflected in Taylor Swift’s sequined leotard, Beyoncé’s unmistakable strut, and even Margot Robbie’s twinkling grin in Barbie. The melangé of glam and controversy in pageantry encouraged The New York Times’ Lauren Herstik to co-produce the documentary How to Fix a Pageant.
“You have things like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé and Barbie this year each earning a billion dollars, or just about to get there,” Herstik tells Rolling Stone. “There’s a lot of connections between that kind of culture...

The pageantry circuit needs more than a new publicist. Sure, longstanding organizations like Miss USA and Miss Universe have always faced criticism, sparking debates over the ethics and social ramifications of judging women on their bodies. Lately though, it seems like the stage has been rife with scandal that goes a lot further than Steve Harvey accidentally announcing the wrong winner or Rachel Leviss aging out of the competition and having an existential crisis on Vanderpump Rules.
Enter How to Fix a Pageant, the latest chapter of The New York Times Presents, from director Nicole Rittenmeyer (102 Minutes That Changed America). The hourlong doc goes deep into the scandals that rocked Miss USA throughout 2022, including rigging, favoritism, multiple conflicts of interest, and sexual assault under the leadership of then-president and former Miss USA Crystle Stewart.

The beauty pageant world will never forget Cheslie Kryst. Nearly six months after Miss USA 2019 died at the age of 30, Miss USA organizers are sharing the ways they plan to honor her at future pageants. "In 2019, I had the honor and privilege of judging the Miss USA pageant at the Grand Sierra Resort and Spa in Reno and crowning former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst," Miss USA Organization President Crystle Stewart exclusively told E! "In honor of Cheslie's memory, we found it to be a fitting full circle moment that this year, the 2022 Miss USA pageant will be held at the same venue in Reno, Nevada, not only as a way to keep Cheslie's legacy alive but also to pay homage to the great...

Fifty-one pageant queens descended upon Louisiana’s Hirsch Memorial Coliseum on Monday for the 67th Miss USA competition — but only one got to leave with the crown.
Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the annual event — whose winner will serve as the United States’ entry in the 2018 Miss Universe pageant — also featured performances from country singer Lee Brice and Lachey’s own 98 Degrees.
Seated on this year’s judges panel was TV host Natasha Curry (Miss Washington USA ’98), reality TV personality Jamie Kern Lima (Miss Washington USA ’00), model/actress Crystle Stewart (Miss USA ’08), businesswoman Denise White (Miss Oregon USA ’94) and host/producer Liliana Vasquez.

For all Taraji P. Henson fans out there – and I'm a card-carrying, dues-paid-up member of the club – the bad news is that her latest feature, following on the heels of this year's hitwoman horror show Proud Mary, sucks this glorious actress down into more cinematic quicksand. Tyler Perry's Acrimony, presumably titled to set it apart from your acrimony or mine, is a female revenge saga packed with so much hysteria that it could set back the burgeoning #MeToo movement a beat or two. Showcasing Henson in this crass ripoff...

After a four-year hiatus from melodrama, Tyler Perry has returned with one of his most rousing pictures yet, Acrimony, which lands somewhere between Douglas Sirk and Tommy Wiseau. Perry’s career has swung between the broad comedy of the Madea adventures to more serious dramas like his best pictures, Daddy’s Little Girl and the Family That Preys. Then there are the films that fall squarely in-between his two operating modes: Why Did I Get Married Too? and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, which offer a morality tale with no time for subtext. While Sirk’s pictures offered a broad, on-the-nose surface morality tale, he specialized in subversive mise-en-scene, subtly pushing the boundaries of good taste. With Perry, what you see is exactly what you get and those expecting restraint and subtext ought to look really anywhere else. About 30 minutes in when leading lady Melinda Gayle (Taraji P. Henson...

In Tyler Perry’s gripping thriller, Acrimony, a faithful wife (Taraji P. Henson) tired of standing by her devious husband (Lyriq Bent) is enraged when it becomes clear she has been betrayed.
When Melinda (Henson) first met Robert (Bent), she was skeptical of his charming nature but couldn’t deny how attracted she was to him. Once they fell in love, Melinda molded herself into everything he wanted her to be. She sacrificed for him, worked to support his grandiose dreams, and put up with him for better or for worse. Then one day she realized that after all she had done, another woman was reaping the lavish rewards.
That’s when Melinda lost it. And now she cannot let it go. She’s been used, disrespected and unpardonably deceived. Or has she?

There's no need to ponder whether Tyler Perry's For Better or Worse TV show will be cancelled or renewed for season seven. Although it is ending, we are still tracking the ratings for a few reasons. Sometimes, networks change their minds and order another season. Also, it's fun.
