Across Europe, Germany has won respect for its approach to education and the management of narratives around the Nazi era, taking responsibility for the sins of its past and actively engaging in efforts to prevent the growth of other fascist movements. There were, however, other dark episodes in its past (as in those of many of its neighbours) which have not faced the same kind of scrutiny. Thomas Sieben’s latest film, which screened as part of Frightfest 2023, brings one of them into the light.
Maria (Nilam Farooq) is eight months pregnant and somewhat fatigued, as if common at that stage, but she’s still busy, opening up the old Wellings house which belongs to her husband’s family, making plans for the B&b which she hopes to open there. In the early evening, as she looks around outside, she is approached by a neighbour, Mike (Anton Fatoni Schneider), who brings her.

I do have a pretty poor reason for wanting to watch Home Sweet Home: Where Evil Lives. At least initially anyway because the reason being is that it holds the same title (Home Sweet Home) as the first book I wrote and released. Obviously, I then had a quick read of the synopsis and discovered that this a film that is shot in one-shot, real-time, and I got even more excited.
It’s not featured a whole lot in the genre but I love films that are shot with one shot. It seems like an incredibly difficult thing to achieve and it always impresses me. The script (and obviously the performances) have to be near perfect. Silent House and the exceptional One Cut of the Dead, have proved that it can absolutely work in horror.

Helping a selection of five European films to connect to Latin American distributors, Efp’s Film Sales Support (Fss) program has awarded grants to three sales agencies to step up their digital campaigns for this year’s hybrid Ventana Sur market.
Two companies from Germany have received support this year, as well as one from Spain. The unspecified amounts are to help the companies to “broaden their online presence and solidify business communications with buyers from Latin America attending Ventana Sur this year,” according to a press statement.
The new initiative underscores the fact that Ventana Sur has become an ever larger distribution springboard for European salles agents and their European films. “Ventana Sur is also a platform for European films, and this year sales are happening online. The onsite part is more focused on projects, pitching, and networking. Marketing is even more important to make films visible when going online,...

"Let me prove to you that I can do it." Studiocanal UK has debuted the official UK trailer for a Germany comedy film titled My Blind Date with Life, or originally Mein Blind Date mit dem Leben in German. The film tells the true story of a student who nearly became blind as a teenager. He keeps his limited eye sight a secret and starts working at a hotel in Munich, soon falling in love with a woman. Kostja Ullmann stars as the lead character Saliya Kahawatte, with a cast including Anna Maria Mühe, Nilam Farooq, Sylvana Krappatsch, Ludger Pistor, Johann von Bülow, and Herbert Forthuber. This looks like a very cheesy German romantic comedy, but there's a heartwarming story behind it all. That said, this doesn't seem like it will be good. At least you can get a glimpse at what campy German comedies are like - have fun.
