- Holds a degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, which honored him in 2005 with its annual award for Distinguished Service to Journalism.
- Before joining CNBC, he was an anchor and reporter for ABC affiliate WZZM in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also worked as an anchor and reporter for NBC affiliate WEAU in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and as a reporter and program host for Wisconsin Public Radio.
- After helping to launch CNBC in New York in 1989, he returned to his hometown of Chicago in 1990 to open the CNBC bureau there. He was stationed in Chicago for nine years, returning to CNBC's global headquarters in 1999. He served as Senior Correspondent until 2014, and continues to contribute to CNBC and all NBC platforms as a special correspondent.
