She did it once perfectly, but she could not do it twice.
Eight days after U.S. figure skater Mirai Nagasu made history as the first American woman to land the notoriously tricky triple axel jump in Olympic competition, she returned to the ice to try it again — but then slipped on the landing and fell hands- and knees-first to the ice.
Skating in the women’s short program at the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea, Nagasu’s routine nonetheless earned her a total score of 66.93, a season’s best.
That put her in second place — just ahead of fellow Team USA skater Bradie Tennell,...

Paging “Dancing with the Stars”: Call Mirai Nagasu right now for your all-athletes season. The figure skater, who became the first American woman — and third woman overall — to land a triple axel at the Olympics on Sunday, has her sights set on the ABC dancing competition when she’s done in Pyeongchang.
“I’m definitely going to be plugging myself here,” Nagasu tells Yahoo!, “but some athletes get to make their debut on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ and so I’m hoping my personality will win me a spot on that show.”
Nagasu, who joined Japan’s Midori Ito (1992) and Mao Asada (2010 and 2014) as the only women to land the three-and-a-half rotation jump on Olympic ice, already has a “Dancing” partner in mind: Mark Ballas, who won the Mirror Ball trophy with Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi 10 years ago on Season 6. U.S. figure skater Mirai Nagasu made history Monday morning in Korea when she became the very first American female to land a triple axel at the Olympics.
The stunning feat was quickly celebrated on Twitter by numerous legends in the skating world, several of whom said they were moved to tears over the accomplishment.
“That was a sloppy cry kind of skate,” tweeted ice dancing legend Meryl Davis, who won gold at the 2014 Olympics with partner Charlie White, and silver at the 2010 Games.

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu has done it again, landing the rare and incredibly difficult triple axel — this time while competing in the Winter Olympics. The feat makes her the first U.S. female figure skater to land the jump during an Olympic competition.
Completing the triple axel at the start of her free skate in the figure skating team event on Monday morning (Sunday evening stateside) already set her apart from her competitors, all before she had even left the rink: None of the other women even planned to attempt the triple axel, which requires a forward takeoff and three-and-a-half rotations in the air.

As the world’s best athletes gear up to go for the gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Team USA ice skaters are speaking out about the former Olympians who inspired them.
The Games will feature competitions in 15 sports disciplines, and one of the most anticipating events, as always, will be figure skating.
Team USA skaters including Nathan Chen, Adam Rippon, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue will show off their talents on the sport’s grandest stage next month. Of course, for many of these new Olympians — many of whom are still in their 20s— it wasn’t so long ago...

This year's U.S. women's figure skating team is incredibly talented. All three women – Ashley Wagner, Gracie Gold and Polina Edmunds – boast triple-triple jump combinations, the most difficult elements, save the occasional triple Axel attempt, in women's figure skating. All three women also have spins that demonstrate the gamut between flexibility and nauseating flexibility.
Why, then, is it audacious to believe the American women will medal at this week's World Championships? Well, for starters, they haven't since 2006.
Eight years off the podium might not seem like such a big deal,...
