Fans of weird and eerie German movies, rejoice! Your Halloween spooky viewing has arrived, and it's carved out a steady spot in Netflix's Top 10 trending watches. "Old People" is German-Romanian filmmaker Andy Fetscher's horror thriller wherein the old eat the young, bludgeon them, and sometimes vomit on them. It's the sort of concept that M. Night Shyamalan would have a field day with, but Fetscher adds more chaos and a cadre of monsters at the door.
A title card at the opening reads:
In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people. A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan and drive them into a seemingly blind rage.
That's right – this is functionally an elderly rage-zombie movie. What a time to be alive.
At its core, the story focuses on generational disconnect by observing lonely elders, excluded from local festivities,...

As we prepare for David Bruckner’s new take on Clive Barker‘s iconic text Hellraiser, what better time to re-evaluate the state of the franchise up to this point?
Even a cursory glance at the ten existing Hellraiser films reveals that not all Cenobite films are made equal. And while the top film is a given, what about the other slots?
Here are my definitive rankings…
10 – Hellraiser: Revelations (2011)
Like many major horror series in the 2000s and beyond, Hellraiser properties were driven by rights issues. Revelations suffers as a result. Dimension Films needed to release a new film or else they would lose the rights, so Revelations was rushed into production and made on the cheap.
Fans of the franchise decried the loss of Doug Bradley, who for the first time refused to reprise his role as Pinhead (let’s be honest: replacement Stephan Smith Collins never stood a chance). Still,...

“Mean Streets” may have reflected the New York City that Martin Scorsese knew, but more often than not, its many imitators reveal how little posers seem to know about acting streetwise. And yet, that doesn’t stop successive generations from trying their hand at sharing their own tales of hard-luck youth on the mean streets of … wherever they hail from, as in “Billy Boy,” whose angsty young male protagonists tempt cruel fate in a city the movie never quite gets around to naming. (There are indications “Boy” was shot in L.A. and Detroit.)

James Franco's upcoming remake of the iconic Lifetime telemovie "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?" is set to get even weirder. The original 1996 film starred Tori Spelling as a young woman with a dangerous and obsessive boyfriend (Ivan Sergei) and was essentially a "Fatal Attraction"-style thriller deal.
Franco's take on the other hand is being described as a "vampire-infused lesbian romance thriller". In this take Leila George plays theater major Leah who introduces her girlfriend Pearl (Emily Meade) to her family. Leah's mother Julie (Tori Spelling) can't shake the feeling something is very wrong and soon makes a startling discovery about Pearl.
Nick Eversman also stars while Ivan Sergei will also return for a cameo. Franco penned the story, produces and will appear in the telemovie which is being directed by Melanie Aitkenhead. The new 'Mother' is set to premiere June 18th.

Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as The Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favourite teacher (Ken Jeong), she enlists the slick but charming Wesley (Robbie Amell), to help take back her ‘label’ and overthrow the school’s resident mean girl Madison (Bella Thorne) reminding everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s Duff.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If there’s one genre I have a soft spot for, even as a thirty-odd year old man, it’s the teen movie.

In the seven years since his breakout role in "Knocked Up," Ken Jeong has played a string of extremes. His role on "Community" as the insane and diabolical Ben Chang has been unpredictable, but his turns in the "Hangover" series and "Role Models" (as the King of Laire, or Live Action Interactive Role-playing Explorers) have been just as funny and unsettling. That's why it's downright intriguing to watch him play a sensitive English teacher in "The Duff," a high school comedy starring Mae Whitman as a girl dubbed The Designated Ugly Fat Friend, a buffer for her hottie pals. We caught up with Jeong to discuss "The Duff," which was just released on Blu-Ray and DVD, and how he relished the chance to play a character who isn't threatening community college students for a living. When you first heard about the "The Duff" and inevitably learned that the title meant "Designated Ugly Fat Friend,...

Nate (Spencer Treat Clark) and Skylar (Nick Eversman) sons of sheriff Bloom Towne (Ted Levine), are involved in the accidental death of Mayor Cavanaugh’s son Dick in a hunting accident. Older brother Nate fired the deadly shot, but to protect him, younger Skylar, still a minor, takes the blame. Owning most of the town’s businesses, the Cavanaugh family itself is wealthy and influential. In retaliation, the family uses their influence to have Skylar set to be tried as an adult, rather than as a minor. Desperate and filled with guilt, Nate breaks Skylar out of the county lock-up and, handcuffed together, the two escape into the local woods. Two deputies are killed in the escape and the Cavanaugh clan, deciding that the sheriff will be unable to act impartially, organize themselves into a search team with orders to shoot on sight. Sheriff Towne joins the search efforts in...

"It was just me, in a dress," Mae Whitman's teenage tomboy Bianca notes in voiceover, as she trades in her sloppy plaid shirts and baggy jeans for a cute Lbd. We've seen this moment before, the She's All That transformation where the so-called awkward girl turns miraculously into a hottie, and this knowing aside is one of many small-but-truthful twists that elevate The Duff from the nightmare it could have been.
An internet-savvy rom-com adapted from the novel by teen wunderkind author Kody Keplinger, The Duff sounds horrifying in concept. CBS Films released their new comedy flick, "The Duff," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was very entertaining, delivering a good mixture of laughs, drama , and romance. It stars: Allison Janney, Romany Malco, Mae Whitman, Ken Jeong, Bianca Santos, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Skyler Samuels and Nick Eversman. The movie revolved around character, Bianca (Mae Whitman), who is a content high school senior until her childhood, next door neighbor friend, Wesley (Robbie Amell), informs her that she is a Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends, Jess and Casey. This newfound information gets to Bianca so much that it causes her to end her friendship with Jess and Casey, and seek out Wesley's help to unDUFF her in exchange for helping him pass his science class, which he is heavily failing. Unfortunately, the school's hot mean chick/Wesley's ex, Madison,...

I’m at a demographic disadvantage regarding The Duff, being neither an adolescent girl nor someone who enjoys comedies that aren’t funny. Based on the ads, you might expect this new teen clique comedy to have some bite – a Mean Girls for a new generation. Duff is an acronym for ‘Designated Ugly Fat Friend’, someone that more attractive girls let hang around with them for contrast – a “gatekeeper to better-looking friends” – which gives it about the most mean-spirited movie title of late. The title role is played by Mae Whitman, who is short, has distracting eyebrows, and is too old for the role, but she’s neither fat nor ugly, not anymore so than Audrey Hepburn was street trash because her face was dirty in My Fair Lady or Rachel Leigh Cook couldn’t get noticed because she wore glasses in She’S All That. Just once I’d...

It behooves me to say, before we begin, that I am nowhere near the target audience for The Duff. There is very little to make one feel old like watching high school students’ lives in upheaval when forced to give up their smartphones, when cell phones without all the bells and whistles were the big thing when I was at that age. And yet, despite this glimpse into the grim passage of time and culture, I guess there is irony in that almost everything in The Duff is familiar. Between dorky kids making good and the villainess whose job it is to make sure everyone stays in their place or the Mom who tries too hard to be hip and with it, crass humor, and a bevy of teenage misunderstandings, almost every teen cliché gets wrapped up in a neat little package. And yet, despite its familiarity, The Duff coasts by on a genuine charm,...

Mae Whitman is one of those enormously talented young actors that has been waiting in the wings for a lead role for some time. The 26-year-old already has 119 IMDb credits to her name, breaking out in the mid-1990s with small turns as George Clooney and Bill Pullman’s daughter in One Fine Day and Independence Day, respectively. She has chops for both comedy and drama, and is able to squeeze out droll laughs as the nondescript Ann Veal on Arrested Development and then break your heart as the insecure Mary Elizabeth in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Whitman has such tremendous ability on the screen that it is a pity her first major leap above the marquee is in such a mediocre film. The Duff, based on Kody Keplinger’s novel, is a silly, clichéd and rarely convincing high-school comedy – perhaps because Whitman is too fresh and beautiful...

We recently had an opportunity to catch up with Dominique Schilling (writer/director) and Caroline Risberg (producer)to discuss their new movie, A Reason, starring Marion Ross (Mrs. Cunningham from Happy Days). See what they had to say about working with a Hollywood legend, their biggest obstacle for this film and what they have in store next. What was the most memorable moment for you while making “A Reason”? Dominique: That’s a hard question. There are so many memorable moments, like when I first drove on to set or when we shot the driving scene with Magda Apanowicz and Nick Eversman. It was an extremely calm experience within the stress on set. Then there was the pool scene and the slap scene. Working with Marion Ross. I would have to say the last shot of the film got my biggest emotional reaction. The camera pulls out in one continuous...

As much as the premise requires you to believe that Mae Whitman is someone you wouldn't hang out with in high school (sorry, anybody wearing a "Tales Of Horror" t-shirt is someone we'd be friends with immediately), could "The Duff" be a little charmer just waiting to arrive in cinemas next month? Despite myself, I'm kinda curious to see how this seemingly average looking teen comedy turns out, if only because it looks like Whitman is making the most of her major leading movie role. Co-starring Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samuels, Nick Eversman, Alison Janney, Romany Malco, and Ken Jeong, the premise isn't that complicated: an ordinary gal seeks to reinvent herself for her senior year and defeat the school's lead mean girl. Listen, we've seen these tropes before in a thousand other movies, but Gold help me, there is just something about this that is working for me.
