The Painter is another tale of a former covert operative forced to pick up his weapons and get back in the game. Can director Kimani Ray Smith and writer Brian Buccellato find a way to give the year a fresh start with the usual assortment of high-stakes espionage mixed with personal and professional betrayals?
Peter was one of the CIA’s top agents until he was sent to kill the same person his wife Elena’s team was sent to bring back alive. She lost the child she was carrying, and their marriage fell apart soon after.
It also destroyed his trust in the agency and in his adoptive father Henry Byrne. He adopted Peter after his parents, who were also agents, were killed in a...

Awkwardly arriving the very same day as “The Bricklayer,” with Aaron Eckhart as an ex-CIA agent with the titular dayjob, “The Painter” has Charlie Weber as ex-cia agent who has taken up … well, you can guess. This more humbly scaled actioner likewise finds its uber-tough erstwhile operative reluctantly forced back into activity amid a conspiratorial hail of bullets. From that shared starting point, Brian Buccellato’s script finds its own path. But neither he nor director Kimani Ray Smith locate much credibility or suspense in an uninspired tale that also features Jon Voight, as well as Madison Bailey from the Netflix series “The Outer Banks.” Lacking in most departments beyond decent pacing and adequate technical polish, this forgettable thriller launches in limited U.S. theaters Jan. 5, and on digital platforms Jan. 9.

"Tell me about the people who came to kill me." Paramount Movies has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller titled The Painter, made by the filmmaker / stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith. This is yet another one of these dull action movies being dumped right onto home video / VOD right away. An ex-CIA operative turned painter is thrown back into a dangerous world when a mysterious woman from his past resurfaces. Now exposed and targeted by a relentless killer and a rogue black ops program, he must rely on skills he thought he left behind in a high-stakes game of survival. Charlie Weber stars as Peter, with Jon Voight, Marie Avgeropoulos, Luisa d'Oliveira, Leah Gibson, and Madison Bailey. This looks like the most obvious & generic action plot ever, a must-save-a-girl-by-killing-everyone repeat and nothing else. // Continue Reading ›...

Also let’s be honest Mandy, Colour Out of Space and Primal are all cracking movies in their own right and these are his latest outings; so you never know, much like Josh Brolin and Matthew McConaughey had their comebacks, we may...

"He's crazy... like me!" This already debuted in the US last month. Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed a second trailer for the sci-fi fantasy action martial arts movie made by Greek-American filmmaker Dimitri Logothetis (director of 2018's Kickboxer: Retaliation) called Jiu Jitsu. It's opening in the UK in just a few more weeks, which is why there is another trailer. Described as "basically Predator meets Mortal Kombat meets National Treasure," the action film is about an ancient order of Jiu Jitsu fighters who face a vicious race of alien invaders in the form of a fighter named Brax. They must battle him for the survival of Earth. That's all you really need to know besides the killer cast: Nicolas Cage along with Alain Moussi, Frank Grillo, Rick Yune, Marie Avgeropoulos, Juju Chan, and Tony Jaa. If this still looks like something you might enjoy, then rent it today and have fun!

It’s not the worst idea in sci-fi B-movie history: a ruthless alien race, that also happen to be experts in the martial arts, invade the planet every half-dozen years to battle its most exceptional warriors. The fate of mankind is at stake, but in “Jiu Jitsu,” writer-director Dimitri Logothetis (“Kickboxer: Retaliation”) makes the absolute least of a promising concept. Shamelessly cribbing from the original “Predator” (1987), “Mortal Kombat” (1992), and “The Bourne Identity” (2002),
After he is saved by a Burmese fishing boat, Jake Barnes (Alain Moussi), a severely injured master Jiu Jitsu fighter, recovers, but suffers from amnesia. Mimicking his state of confusion, it’s not clear when the film takes place — though the characters refer to their location (where much of the action unfolds) as Burma, which became Myanmar in 1989, so one can only assume that the film is either set prior to 1989, or is in some kind of alternate...

The following contains The 100 spoilers.
In a pivotal moment for the fate of humanity during The 100’s series finale, the Disciples and Wonkru found themselves devolving into war. The Disciples were awaiting what they thought would be The Last War, an existential battle to determine whether humanity would transcend to a higher plane of existence. Wonkru (and some former Eligius prisoners) were there as a distraction to buy Clarke time to stop Cadogan from bringing about The Last War and/or transcendence. With the Grounders facing off against an army as technologically advanced as the Disciples, and one that had bested Sheidheda so quickly a few episodes prior, it’s no surprise that Sheidheda was able to deceptively be the shot heard ‘round the world and send things into chaos.
But as Raven and the higher consciousness in Abby’s form looked on, it wasn’t any of the studied Disciples who intervened,...

The 100 came with a few surprises when it decided to introduce a universe of new planets, and Levitt was definitely one of them.
Levitt was a character that came out nowhere, but along the way, he had perfect timing and the compassion that Bardo was desperately lacking. He was there for Octavia when she needed a person in her corner, and just like that, he became the outside man on call.
From the moment he watched Octavia's memories and learned that there was another way to live, Levitt was trying to find the middle-ground between his life's mission and experiences he never had before.
Jason Diaz took on the challenge of exploring Levitt, building a character from mannerisms and unspoken motivations.
To have a storyline set in a place like Bardo, there needs to be a promise of something better. Levitt took that title on in stride, offering kindness to...

At least one actor who got the chance to try her hand at directing on The 100 is honing that craft in future projects.

Warning: This post contains spoilers from “The 100” series finale.
Wednesday’s series finale of The CW’s “The 100” packed plenty of drama, but one particularly heart-wrenching scene between Levitt (Jason Diaz) and Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) had to be “sacrificed” at the last minute, showrunner Jason Rothenberg told TheWrap.
Don’t worry, we know exactly what you missed.
The finale was shot in early March just before the production shutdown, forcing the episode to be shot over two days instead of the originally intended three. Rothenberg, who served as writer and director for the ending to the sci-fi drama’s seven-season run, says he got to fit just about everything he wanted into that shocking finale episode — except for one “emotional” scene that we’ll never get to see.
“Levitt was supposed to shoot somebody when they walked into the Stone Room, and that beat alone with the stunt...

We've reached the end of the road, and The 100's penultimate episode just geared us up for an insane series finale. Not to mention, it gave us literally the most painful Season 1 callback we could have ever imagined.

As The 100 nears the end of its seven-season run, the creator and executive producer Jason Rothenberg was joined by cast members Marie Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon, Tasya Teles, Shannon Kook, Jr Bourne and Shelby Flannery in a pre-taped panel for Comic-Con@Home to reflect about their time on the CW sci-fi series. In addition to that, Rothenberg gave audiences some vague hints about the backdoor prequel pilot to the series which aired earlier this month.
“We definitely started the season wanting to make sure we didn’t leave anything on the field,” said Rothenberg about wrapping up seven seasons. He added that he recognizes the series leaves a lot of unanswered questions throughout the seasons that he wanted to answer and said that the prequel episode helped “fill in a lot of the blanks”. For example, he pointed out that the episode addressed why the bunker was empty...

A character can leave a lasting impression from the second they appear, whether we know it or not.
Sometimes it is about the story that the character is involved in, but in this case, it it was about the energy that character brings that helps The 100 stand out differently. Ilian was that character; from the moment he appeared on the show, it changed expectations.
Chai Hansen delivered a touching and epic performance as a person who found himself a bit lost but used that to motivate himself.
It wasn't only about how Ilian played a role in other people's stories once he crossed their path; it was also about the peace he could find in himself after struggling towards redemption.
Chai took the challenge of introducing a new character and made it an unforgettable experience that the audience spent with Ilian. It was so easy to root for Ilian because...

The 100 Season 7 Episode 7
Lindsey Morgan (who plays Raven Rayes) directed a crackling episode of The 100 that treats us to a heaping pile of wonderful character moments and more mysteries than you can shake a stick at. Sheidheda continues to prove why he had a reputation as a master strategist and Emori comes into her own as a leader on Sanctum while Murphy struggles with the opposite impulse. Meanwhile, some of the most formidable women on the show found themselves imprisoned on Bardo, and Jackson helped Madi lay down her burden as Commander and simply be a kid.
Gabriel took a deal from Anders to join the Cypher Team rather quickly – so quickly that I’ve got to think his plan is to gather intel and play double agent. If he had stopped to consider it and searched his soul a bit, turning against...

When is it too late to have specific conversations?
The 100 brings that question our way while also making us wonder about the communication it is trying to have with its audience.
During The 100 Season 7 Episode 7, Gabriel and the others allow themselves to join the cult in Bardo. Gabriel gets to help code-break while the others are presumably disciples now.
Meanwhile, Emori was trying to unite the people in Sanctum while Sheidheda had a plan to tear them apart. Murphy and Nelson were the pawns stuck in the middle of the Sanctum chessboard, and Emori's life is now on the line.
Last but not least, Clarke and the others arrived in Bardo only to find out that Bellamy "died." And somewhere more suspicious, Anders woke up The Shepherd, who turned out to be Cadogan.
"The Queen's Gambit," written by Miranda Kwok, forced characters into impossible places where they ended up...

The 100 fans, mark your calendars for July 8th. This is the broadcast date for the seventh season episode of The 100 that will act as a backdoor pilot for The 100 prequel series in development at The CW.
A backdoor pilot is the industry term for when an episode of an already-existing TV show does double duty as a regular episode and a concept for a spin-off show. The episode and potential series will be set 97 years prior to the events of The 100, shortly after the nuclear apocalypse that ended most life on Earth and sent a portion of humanity into space to wait out the nuclear fallout for the next century.
Jason Rothenberg, who developed The 100 series from the young adult book series of the same name by Kass Morgan, will also be developing the prequel series, alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. Rothenberg wrote the backdoor pilot episode,...

The 100 Season 7 Episode 2
“The Garden” flits back and forth through time to introduce us to the world beyond the Anomaly, and by extension, to properly reintroduce us to Hope and the Anomaly itself, now known as the bridge. Quite literally a world apart, it’s a magical hour of television that stands as one of the series’ best episodes.
Drawing on the longstanding, well-earned redemption arcs of Diyoza and Octavia and their extremely close bond, this episode asks the question “what makes a family?” and “what kind of life would be enough?” Like The Magicians’ highly celebrated “A Life in the Day” before it, the time dilation on Sky Ring allows Diyoza and Octavia to spend a decade raising a child together without losing more than a few days back in Sanctum. So much of the wonder of this episode belongs, truly, to Marie Avgeropoulos and Ivana Miličević,...

Going back to where it all started doesn't mean you will end up in the same place, but there's also no way to escape it.
At least if you're in Skyring.
It is safe to say that history will always have a way of repeating itself.
During The 100 Season 7 Episode 2, the story explored the time Octavia and Diyoza spent on Skyring after they went into the Anomaly last time. Echo, Hope, and Gabriel arrived at Skyring and faced their future, determining what's next.
And for those keeping track, Bellamy Blake was still nowhere to be found.
The same can be said for Sanctum, since there was no insight after that twist during The 100 Season 7 Episode 1.
"The Garden," written by Jeff Vlaming, crafted a fascinating new world by blending the past and the present, all to create intrigue about the future.
In what was possibly the most visually and emotionally striking...

Octavia Blake has been with The 100 since the show first premiered, representing all that the show continues to thrive on.
And in many ways, it feels like Octavia exists as many people, getting the chance to have a completely new approach every season. From innocence to chaos to redemption, Octavia is always there to explore the many possibilities of growing up as a person.
None of that would be possible without Marie Avgeropoulos taking on challenge after challenge each season, creating a new way to look at the character each time she goes on a self-driven journey.
The last time we saw Octavia, during The 100 Season 6 Episode 13, she was trying to help Gabriel solve the Anomaly mystery.
But her involvement took a turn when Hope showed up out of nowhere, stabbed Octavia at her request, and then stayed in her place. Octavia was taken by the Anomaly, as she was bleeding in Bellamy's arms,...

It is all in the details, especially the ones that you don't see.
