"Treme's" shortened fourth and final season is due to premiere on HBO on Dec. 1, but fortunately fans of the series can have a taste of the show while they wait for the final five episodes to air. A cookbook called "Treme: Stories and Recipes from the Heart of New Orleans," which was written by "Treme" story editor Lolis Eric Elie, was released by Chronicle Books on July 24.
Zap2it spoke with Elie about the cookbook, which not only gives detailed recipes from the heart of New Orleans but also spotlights the people who live there. Like "Treme," the goal of the cookbook was to share a slice of life from post-Katrina New Orleans.
"The first thing I did was go back and look at all the times we saw food on screen and we talked about it on screen and tried to figure out which of those recipes to use.

On Monday, Jan. 14, PBS' "Independent Lens" presents "Soul Food Junkies," a documentary from filmmaker, writer, activist and lecturer Byron Hurt ("Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes").
Hurt grew up eating "soul food" from the African-American Southern tradition: grits and cheese-covered scrambled eggs, buttered biscuits with gravy, bacon, collard greens with ham hocks, fried pork chops, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, fried fish, barbecued chicken and ribs, and candied yams.
While all these dishes are delicious and come from recipes passed down for generations in families, they also can contain large amounts of fat, sugar and salt.
Hurt grew up concerned about the health of his overweight father, who eventually succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. One of the risk factors for developing this kind of cancer is a high-fat diet centered on meat.
Worried this same fate was befalling others in the African-American community, Hurt set out to...

Treme, Season 3, Episode 5: “I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say”
Written by Eric Overmyer (Story), Lolis Eric Elie and Jen Ralson (Teleplay)
Directed by Alex Hall
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
This week, on Treme: Amy’s family comes to visit, Sofia can’t catch a break, and Terry does a hell of a John Wayne
While this is another solid, entertaining, and inspiring episode of Treme, it has the unfortunate distinction of coming after last week’s installment, which ranks among the series’ best. Its proximity to “The Greatest Love” calls attention to this episode’s, and the show’s, weaknesses, by far the most prominent of which is the number of characters. Many shows find tremendous success with massive, sprawling casts, but what these show do that Treme doesn’t is tie their ensembles together. Each of our main characters has its own set...

The film won Outstanding Picture of the Year with Viola Davis winning Outstanding Actress and Octavia Spencer taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

"I Love You Phillip Morris" came out of nowhere and secured a nod for the 2011 Writers Guild Awards. Based on the book by Steven McVicker, the film starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGRegor as prisoners in love received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.
"Phillip Morris" will be competing with awards-favorites "127 Hours" (screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy), "The Social Network" (screenplay Aaron Sorkin), "The Town" (screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard), and True Grit (screenplay by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen).
In the Original Screenplay category, critics-darlings "Black Swan" (screenplay by Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin), "The Fighter" (screenplay by Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson), "Inception" (Christopher Nolan), and "The Kids Are All Right" (written by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg) will be competing with "Please Give" by Nicole Holofcener. Writers Guild of America has announced the writers who receive nominations at next year's awards for their work in television. The most nod that one show gets is three, and that number is claimed by "Modern Family", "30 Rock" and "Breaking Bad".
"Modern Family" and "30 Rock", which have won Emmys, will be up against each other in comedy series and have each received two nods for episodic category. Meanwhile, "Breaking Bad" takes a nod in drama field and two additional episodic nominations.
AMC's "The Walking Dead" is vying for new series prize, battling "Boardwalk Empire", "Justified", "Treme" and "Men of a Certain Age" along the way. "Empire" in particular is also nominated for drama series against older and more prominent shows like "Mad Men" and "Dexter".

With Treme Episode 5, we're halfway through Season 1. Former Times Picayune reporter Lolis Eric Elie wrote this episode, so it's a good time to describe the headlines that may have inspired plotlines. Some are hauntingly familiar, since our new mayor has just declared a state of emergency from a man-made disaster. The Writer We start off with John Goodman's character Creighton Bernette creating a You Tube video message to President George Bush to follow his, "Fuck you, you fucking fucks" based on the work of Ashley Morris. I can only imagine what his response would have been to the quarter million gallons of oil a day filling the Gulf of Mexico and shutting down fisheries. Because now they're fucking with our seafood. And seafood is probably on the menu at Upperline where the Burnettes dine, and in the character Janette's...
