Montreal’s Frontières, the industry arm of Canada’s Fantasia Film Festival, has announced its winners.
In the official selection, “Freya” proved unbeatable, taking home the Post-Production Award by PurpleDOG Post worth Cad$10,000. The same award – and Cad$5,000 – was also given to Forum’s “In the Heart of the South” and Genre Film Lab’s “Alligator.”
The Pitch Deck Award, offered by The Film Deck, went to “Animal Realm,” presented in the Shorts to Features section.
“We are extremely grateful to PurpleDOG Post and The Film Deck for supporting us with the awards this year. Our plan is to continue doing it and hopefully grow, by partnering up with the companies that can support filmmakers in their production process,” Annick Mahnert, Frontières executive director, told Variety.
“Each of these projects has a specific identity and they are all extremely original. I know they didn’t have an easy job selecting the awardees.

One of my favorite movies from SXSW Film Festival earlier this year was Slash/Back, a fantastically creative tale that follows a group of young girls who are tasked with saving their small community of Pangnirtung, Nunavut from tentacled aliens. The film, which could be compared to a mashup of Attack the Block and The Thing, not only showcases a group of fierce, feminist, Indigenous girls kicking alien ass, it left me with a smile on my face.
Written by Nyla Innuksuk, in her screenwriting debut, and Ryan Cavan (Sinister Switch), and directed by Innuksuk in her directorial debut, Slash/Back features wonderful performances by its young cast, which includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky. Slash/Back was filmed on location in Pang and utilized a combination of practical effects and CGI to create the spectacular alien effects.

Scripted by Innuksuk and Ryan Cavan, the film has the following synopsis:
Set in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the majestic mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean, Slash/Back opens as the village wakes up to a typical summer day. No School, no cool boys (well… except one), and 24-hour sunlight. But for Maika and her ragtag friends, the usual summer is suddenly not in the cards when they...

"What they don't know, is that we're the best hunters there is." Rlje Films + Shudder have revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Slash/Back, which first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. This radical little indie sci-fi is about a group of teenage Inuit girls from Pangnirtung, Nunavut (see Google Maps) - a town way, way up on the North East coast of Canada - closer to Greenland than anywhere else. When Maika and her ragtag friends discover an alien invasion in their tiny arctic hamlet, it's up to them to save the day. Utilizing their makeshift weapons and horror movie knowledge, the aliens realize you don't mess with girls from Pang. Starring Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth, and Chelsea Prusky. It was co-written with Ryan Cavan with Nyla Innuksuk, making her feature screenwriting and directorial debut. It's landing in theaters in October! This is pretty...

A group of resourceful teenagers defend their island community in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, from body-possessing extraterrestrials in the official trailer for Slash/Back, coming to theaters, On Demand, and Digital on October 21st via Rlje Films before heading to Shudder later this year.
Directed by Nyla Innuksuk and written by Innuksuk and Ryan Cavan, Slash/Back stars Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth, and Chelsea Prusky.
I had a chance to see Slash/Back through Popcorn Frights Film Festival this year, and it's an absolute blast with compelling characters and creepy extraterrestrial effects that pay homage to John Carpenter's The Thing.

Shot in and around the remote fishing village of Pangnirtung near the arctic circle, Nyla Innuksuk’s debut feature Slash/Back opens with a researcher taking permafrost samples discovering a smoking hole in the tundra. His research into it is cut short when a tentacle reaches out and attacks him. Stuck in a town so small and remote that even Walmart won’t open a store there, the girls “borrow” a boat and cruise out to a remote cabin to hang out. But when a strange-looking polar bear attacks Aju things take a turn for the worse.
It might not be The Thing, but body-jumping aliens are back in the frozen north. And it’s up to a group of Indigenous girls, Maika (Tasiana Shirley...

40th Anniversary Classic Giallo Film Tenebrae Coming July 26 in 4K Ultra HD: "Italian horror master Dario Argento elevates the giallo genre to new heights with 1982's Tenebrae, a darkly humorous and notoriously grisly murder-mystery that many consider to be one of his finest works.
Now, Synapse Films, in conjunction with Arrow Video, makes this gory suspense classic available for the first time on Uhd in a new 4K restoration for Tenebrae's 40th anniversary!
American mystery author Peter Neal comes to Rome to promote his newest novel, Tenebrae. A razor-wielding psychopath is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. Rlje Films and Shudder have acquired Nyla Innuksuk’s “Slash/Back,” an alien invasion thriller that premiered to raves at this year’s SXSW.
The two companies are business units of AMC Networks. The film is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD/Digital before streaming on Shudder later this year. Shudder is focused on horror, thriller and supernatural content, so the appeal is obvious.
“Slash/Back” is the feature directorial debut of Innuksuk, who also co-wrote the film with Ryan Cavan (“The Secret Goat”). It stars a young cast that includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky.
“The brilliant effects, strong female leads and fun, adventurous story make this a film we know audiences are going to love,” said Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at Rlje Films.
Critics embraced the film after it debuted at SXSW, with Variety‘s Peter Debruge writing, “Indigenous director Nyla Innuksuk...

In the simplest terms, Nyla Innuksuk's "Slash/Back" is "Attack the Block" meets "Reservation Dogs." Innuksuk honors Inuit roots by opting away from another "Stranger Things"-style coming-of-age horror hybrid that takes place on suburban streets. "Slash/Back" transports viewers to the Canadian territory of Nunavut, precisely the hamlet of Pang, highlighted by glacier-created fjords and Baffin Island mountains for incredible natural production values. Innuksuk and co-writer Ryan Cavan write about teenagers processing their Indigenous surroundings as much as global adolescent problems like curfews and crushes, for a uniquely Inuit creature feature that's got enough of what monster fans might crave.

In “Slash/Back,” something sinister from outer space lands a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, and humanity’s first line of defense proves to be a group of Inuit girls armed with nothing but their wits and a bunch of traditional hunting and fishing tools. In most low-budget alien-invasion movies, the heroes/victims are fairly generic, whereas the extra-terrestrial threat is what draws the crowd. But Native helmer Nyla Innuksuk (who co-wrote with Ryan Cavan) turns that equation inside-out, making this spunky band of save-the-world teens the main reason to see her movie — although the novel far-north location and reasonably fresh monster effects don’t hurt.
Innuksuk shot her debut in and around Pangnirtung, a tiny fishing community in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, where the sun never sets. Surrounded by snowy tundra, this gorgeous, remote location looks out on distant mountains, suggesting a less-intense version of John Carpenter...

Sure, it was great to experience this year’s lineup of feature films at TAD08, but also included with each screening was a generally-fantastic short film, mostly of the darkly humorous variety. Here, then, is a little wrap-up of the short films I saw that got the ghouls giggling this last week.
#1: Treevenge. Canada, 2008. Directed by Jason Eisener. Rating: 9/10
A great concept, beautifully executed. We follow the brutal hacking, packing and deco-racking of a group of prescient Christmas trees as they go from the forest to xmas morn in a cul-de-sac of middle class families. Then they snap, with gruesome and hilarious results, attacking and killing everyone in the neighborhood, from the unbelieving parents to an unforgettable scene with a little baby. Gory and yet oddly funny. You’ll never look at an xmas tree the same way again.
#2: The Auburn Hills Breakdown. Canada, 2008. Directed by Geoff Redknap.
