When director Ridley Scott was promoting his latest—and we might argue funniest—historical epic back in November, the filmmaker spoke with pride about the film addressing Napoleon Bonaparte’s legendary campaign into Egypt. As Scott pointed out to Deadline, no previous film about the Frenchman who plunged Europe into decades of war had also addressed his misadventures in North Africa and the Near East too.
“I saw these wonderful two paintings,” Scott said at the time. “One was of a man sitting on a horse staring at the Sphinx, and it was Napoleon. So I thought I had to have that because no one has done the Egyptian campaign. And the truth [is] they took it over pretty easily.”
He is partially right. Napoleon did indeed conquer Egypt with relative ease in 1798. Keeping the land proved to be another story entirely, one which Scott’s Napoleon glosses over in its...

Kaiji collide in the latest trailer for next year’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Take a look:
Update: A second trailer for the film has now landed, and it looks like this…
Here’s where we were back in December 2023…
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon sparked a minor ripple of controversy with its scene of Bonaparte’s army firing cannonballs at the Pyramids of Giza. It’s somewhat disconcerting, then, to see the same pyramids again under assault – this time frow what appears to be a giant ape wearing a robot arm.
This is Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard’s sequel to his own 2021 monster mash-up, Godzilla Vs Kong. Rebecca Hall returns as Dr Ilene Andrews, leading a cast which includes a returning Brian Tyree Henry and franchise newcomer Dan Stevens as the fleshy humans running about among the kaijus’ feet.

2023 was a surprisingly great year for several movie genres, but action fans in particular had a bounty of terrific options to choose from. When it came time for a few of the /Film writers and editors to get together and rank our favorites, our individual lists were overflowing with great titles. But in accordance with the unwritten laws/demands of the Internet, we were forced to make some tough decisions, whittle our choices down to a collective ten films, and rank them accordingly.
As is often the case, the movies that didn't make this list could easily comprise an impressive list of their own. When the inventive and propulsive "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the energetic and comedic "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," the brutal and pulpy "Sisu," the touching and hilarious "Polite Society," and the moody and subversive "The Killer" get relegated to honorable mentions, it becomes clear how...

Ridley Scott has the giggles. The revelation that I’m a New Yorker has prompted the legendary director to launch into a winding tale of the time he was on a traveling scholarship after graduating from London’s Royal College of Art.
“They said, ‘Where do you want to go?’ And, being a 22-year-old in London, I said, ‘I want to go to New York,’” he recalls.
When he arrived in the Big Apple, Scott was told that the most reasonably priced place to stay while on a grant was the Ymca.

In July 1798, Napoleon led a campaign into Egypt and Syria as a means to conquer the region and, in the words of unreliable history textbooks, to establish trade and scientific exchange. It was Napoleon's campaign to Egypt and Syria that uncovered the Rosetta Stone, although it came at the cost of about 65,000 lives. Napoleon's campaign has been famously dramatized in a series of paintings, several of which director Ridley Scott recreated for his new biopic "Napoleon." The above scene of Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) sitting on horseback in front of the Sphinx is taken from Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1897 portrait, called "Oedipus," painted to celebrate the centennial of the event.
After Scott stages a scene of Napoleon firing cannons at the Pyramids of Giza, he then recreates another notable painting, this time by French artist Maurice Orange who, in the late 19th century, painted "Bonaparte at the Pyramids." In Orange's portrait,...

“All art is autobiographical,” Federico Fellini once said. “The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” No one would accuse Napoleon, Ridley Scott’s two-and-a-half-hour epic (that’s the theatrical cut’s running time, mind you; there’s a four-hour version waiting in the wings as well) about the French dictator’s rise and fall, of being thinly veiled autofiction in period dress. You sure as hell wouldn’t call it a pearl, either. Starting with the French revolution and ending with Monsieur Bonaparte’s no-bang-all-whimper exit from this mortal coil,...

Ridley Scott has never been one to take kindly to harsh criticism. Now, Ridley Scott is defending his latest film, Napoleon, from Bonaparte’s home country, France.
In response to the apparent wealth of French critics targeting Napoleon, Ridley Scott seemed to take a swipe at the country as a whole, saying, “The French don’t even like themselves…The audience that I showed it to in Paris, they loved it.” Regarding negativity, the BBC cited Le Figaro’s review that said “Barbie and Ken under the Empire”, while French GQ said the moment that featured French soldiers — with clearly Americanized accents — shouting “Vive La France” was “deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny.”
When the BBC asked Ridley Scott if he had any words about those who are actively criticizing Napoleon’s historical accuracy, the director stated, “You really want me to answer that?… it will have a bleep in it.

Ridley Scott may be 85 years old but the prolific filmmaker behind such classics as "Alien" and "Gladiator" is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. After releasing both "House of Gucci" and "The Last Duel" in 2021, Scott is back with a new film in the form of "Napoleon." Produced by Apple Studios, the film reunites the Oscar-winning filmmaker with fellow Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix ("Joker"), with the actor playing the title role as the famed French military leader. The question is, can the duo ride to box office glory on the back of this pricey historical epic?

“Napoleonic battles are so beautiful. Like vast, lethal ballets… they all have an aesthetic brilliance that doesn’t require a military mind to appreciate.” So said Stanley Kubrick, who had long cherished the ambition of directing a film exploring the life of the Corsican-born artillery officer who rose to become the emperor of France. And Kubrick came close to doing so in the late 1960s, before being forced to abandon the project. This appreciation of the savage artistry of the great general’s battle strategies is a sentiment that you suspect was shared by Ridley Scott in his approach to Napoleon, a sturdy but uneven historical epic that traces the rise and fall of Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix), starting with the French Revolution and...

Blood flows plentifully throughout Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. It practically is a title card in the film’s opening sequence, which presages the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, future Emperor of France, with the execution of Marie Antoinette. Her dripping severed head acts as a preview of coming attractions, and how the little man in the big hat would prove to be a matchstick to 19th century Europe’s powder keg of tensions. So yes, there is gore to Scott’s brisk 158-minute SparkNotes summary of the Napoleonic Wars. Battles too, if only in brief vignettes as we bear witness to flashes of the Battle of Toulon, the Battle of the Pyramids, the Battle of Austerlitz, and of course the Battle of Waterloo (we spend a little more time on that one).
And yet, the blood I speak of is not any R-rated accentuations of Scott’s reliably visceral battlefield sequences.

There’s nothing like launching a costume drama with a good old-fashioned beheading. Unfortunately, in Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated period piece, the head belongs to one-scene wonder Marie Antoinette. How many times does that history-trampled French queen – her beautiful face pale as baby powder, her eyes wide and wild, her hair a platinum frizz – have to put up with such indignity? She’s the 18th-century equivalent of Bambi’s mom. Give me Sofia Coppola, or give me death.

In a conversation with Empire Magazine, Ridley Scott promised a cut of his latest movie Napoleon that is over four hours long and “fantastic”; this would be an exciting prospect on paper, maybe, if the two-and-a-half-hour cut of Napoleon felt like anything beyond a cursory scroll through Wikipedia. The acclaimed director’s latest historical epic––not so much sword and sandal as it is cannon and boots––starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, however, is an unfortunate slog: all filler, no killer, stretching into tedium before its rushed ending.
Napoleon Bonaparte, the 19th-century French emperor, is already a man of myth and legend: a genius military tactician; a complicated lover; short, supposedly, but by whose standards. The letters to and from his first wife Joséphine de Beauharnais (depicted here by Vanessa Kirby) paint a picture of a man aching for approval and love from those near and far. There are ghosts on and off the screen in Ridley Scott’s 28th feature, chief among them being Stanley Kubrick’s unrealized biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican military strategist who inveigled his way up through the ranks of the military to become the leader of France not once but twice. That at the age of nearly 86 Scott has stepped up to finish what Kubrick couldn’t is something the British director will no doubt relish. But though his take on the story is his own, there’s still something elusive about Bonaparte’s story that doesn’t make a coherent whole: as is consistent with history, Scott’s Napoleon is a lover and a fighter, an incongruity that leads to sharp changes in tone and a restlessly episodic narrative that can be overwhelming in its dates, names and places.

Numerous times in Napoleon, the mist settles over wintry landscapes, delicately summoning visual echoes of The Duellists, the 1977 debut feature set during the same period that put Ridley Scott on the map. Then there are muscular, large-scale scenes of warfare more characteristic of the veteran director’s later work, notably the Battle of Austerlitz, where cannon fire from Bonaparte’s army sends Austrian and Russian troops plunging to icy deaths in a frozen lake, its water stained with blood. But for all its brawn and atmosphere and robustly choreographed combat, this is a distended historical tapestry too sprawling to remain compelling, particularly when its focus veers away from the central couple.

Napoleon Bonaparte is known for being many things: Warrior, General, Tyrant, Genius, Rebel. Take your pick! For Ridley Scott’s new film, Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix brings many shades of Bonaparte’s reputation to light, highlighting the complex historical figure’s faults and strategic erudition. Today, Columbia Pictures debuted a new clip from Napoleon featuring the Battle of Austerlitz, aka the Battle of Three Emperors.
The footage finds Phoenix’s Napoleon taking the high ground, looking down on his enemies with disdain and menacing intent. As both sides of the conflict converge, Napoleon waits for his adversaries to make a grave mistake. Once carefully chosen battlefield positions reveal themselves, Napoleon’s enemies discover they’re traversing a frozen body of water. Before they can retreat to safety, Napoleon unleashes hell in the form of cannon balls pointed directly at the frigid lakebed. As the artillery pierces the ice, soldiers fall to their deaths,...

Hollywood is ready to dust off the red carpet.
After months-long dual labor strikes that prevented top actors and screenwriters from promoting their projects, star power will finally return to premieres, panels and other splashy events. It’s a huge relief for once-struck companies because too many major movies, like Sony’s starry Game Stop-stock comedy “Dumb Money” and Martin Scorsese’s big-budget crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” haven’t lived up to box office expectations without Pete Davidson, Seth Rogen, Leonardo DiCaprio or Robert De Niro on the late-night and talk show circuit. Studios and networks wasted almost no time celebrating the news that A-list talent can once again promote, promote, promote to the heavens.
At 12:03 a.m. — approximately two minutes after the 118-day SAG strike ended — Netflix issued an updated invitation to include the cast for the Los Angeles premiere of the final season of “The Crown” on Sunday.

Ridley Scott is returning to theaters this month with the release of the historical drama “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais. The film promises to bring numerous historical events to the big screen, from the beheading of Marie Antoinette to the Battle of Waterloo, but not all of them might be fully accurate.
As observed in Scott’s new interview with The New Yorker, the official “Napoleon” trailer was met with criticism by TV historian Dan Snow, who called out some of the inaccuracies in a viral TikTok post. Snow argued that “Napoleon didn’t shoot at the pyramids” (the film’s trailer depicted as much during a peek at Scott’s interpretation of the Battle of Pyramids), and he said that Marie Antoinette “famously had very cropped hair for the execution, and, hey, Napoleon wasn’t there...

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby.
For Scott, reuniting with Phoenix for the first time since Gladiator was an immense pleasure. “He’s the only actor where we talk for weeks beforehand, just chatting and arguing in an office over aspects of the character. At the end, we are on the same page,” says Scott. “He’s good for me, because he keeps me honest, and I’m good for him, because I keep him in line. Physically, he’s perfect for the role – some of his facial features are strikingly similar to Napoleon’s.”

"Who's country are we in? Mine." Sony + Apple have revealed the second official trailer for Napoleon, the next epic Ridley Scott movie about the iconic French emperor. It's still set to open in November, and this is the second actual trailer since the first trailer in July (along with a few featurettes). I'm glad they're not delaying this - we need a big movie to bring us all to theaters again this fall. An Apple Studios production in conjunction with Scott Free Productions, Napoleon is an original & personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte's origins. Along with his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. As she says: "You want to be great. But you are nothing without me." Someone who dares challenge him! Joaquin Phoenix stars as Bonaparte, with Vanessa Kirby as Josephine, plus Ludivine Sagnier,...

A new trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic “Napoleon” has arrived, and this one seems to telegraph the “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner” filmmaker’s modern approach to the story of the French leader.
A variation of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” plays throughout the trailer, which introduces Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Napoleon Bonaparte sans French accent. Scott made the decision to have all of his actors use their real accents (Vanessa Kirby uses her English accent while playing Bonparte’s wife Josephine), so Phoenix’s take on Bonaparte is decidedly American.
Written by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” is Scott’s return to the historical epic genre, familiar territory for him. Aside from Best Picture winner “Gladiator,” Scott also steered 1992’s “1492” and his 2005 film about the crusades, “Kingdom of Heaven,” only gained esteem when his superior director’s cut was released on home video.

All hail Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte.
Phoenix leads Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” as the famed French ruler. The R-rated film marks a reunion between director/producer Scott and “All the Money in the World” scribe David Scarpa, who both co-wrote the script.
The official synopsis reads: “Napoleon” is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The intention of the film is to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.
Scott previously revealed that he ended up rewriting the whole “goddamn film” to instead more fully focus on Phoenix as Napoleon. Originally titled “Kitbag,” the film was centered around the romantic relationship between Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) and Napoleon, instead.

Ridley Scott’s epic new film “Napoleon,” arguably one of the year’s last remaining mysteries, received a new trailer on Wednesday, just about one month before its theatrical debut.
The Apple film, which arrives in theaters via Sony, has not premiered at any of the fall festivals thus far, nor has it been screened widely to members of the press and industry.
But the new trailer is certainly promising, with star Joaquin Phoenix affecting a deadpan detachment as the famed Napoleon amid scenes of typically explosive Scott action that will look familiar to fans of “Gladiator,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.”
Here’s the logline from Sony and Apple:

Few directors are as legendary for making alternate cuts of their films as everyone's favorite cantankerous auteur, Sir Ridley Scott. Most notably, the "Alien" and "Gladiator" filmmaker has released several different versions of "Blade Runner" over the years, further fanning the flames of the never-ending debate over whether Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard is a human or replicant. Then there was his 1985 fantasy adventure "Legend," which went from being a critical and financial misfire to becoming something of a cult hit after Universal unveiled Scott's extended cut back in the 2000s (complete with Jerry Goldsmith's original score). The director's 2005 Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven" underwent a similar reappraisal when Scott's preferred cut of the film was made available on home media boasting a whopping 50 or so minutes of added material.

Ridley Scott has made no secret of the fact that he was impressed by Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in “Joker.” But the “Blade Runner” director doesn’t necessarily endorse all of the film’s contents.
In a new interview with Deadline, Scott reiterated that he was inspired to cast Phoenix in his upcoming biopic “Napoleon” after watching his Oscar-winning performance in Todd Phillips’ DC origin story. But he added that he didn’t like what he saw as the film’s glorification of violence.
“I was blown away by his outrageous film ‘Joker,'” Scott said. “I didn’t like the way it celebrated violence but Joaquin was remarkable. I thought he’d be an amazing asset to ‘Napoleon,’ [not only creatively] also in a commercial sense. There were only two actors I had in mind for the role. I won’t mention the other one.”
Scott has clearly spent a lot of time thinking about “Joker.

Ridley Scott Reveals He Has A ‘Fantastic’ Four-And-a-Half Hour Cut Of ‘Napoleon’ He’d Love To Screen
One of the most anticipated films coming up this fall is “Napoleon”, the historical epic from director Ridley Scott, reuniting him with “Gladiator” star Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the general turned emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
According to Variety, the film — set to stream on Apple TV+ this fall — clocks in at a hefty 158 minutes. However, Scott is revealing he’s got a far-longer cut that he feels is worthy to be seen.
In a new interview with Empire (via Variety), Scott says he’s got a cut of the film that’s about four-and-a-half hours long, describing that cut as “fantastic.”

There are a few actors in Hollywood who have developed a reputation for totally committing to their roles. Joaquin Phoenix is one such star, a dedicated actor who has been a working performer since he was a child. Known for his occasionally eccentric behavior both on and off-set, Phoenix has portrayed real-life historical figures such as Johnny Cash, along with mythical villains such as the Joker.
Phoenix’s newest role is bound to be one of his most buzzworthy. As Napoleon Bonaparte in an upcoming historical drama, Phoenix is already making headlines for his work. Notably, rumors recently started swirling that Phoenix slapped his co-star on the film, albeit for a rather unexpected reason.

Ridley Scott sets are a place where movie magic happens. They're where Thelma & Louise hold hands as they face the end of the road, aliens burst from the chests of unsuspecting astronauts, and stars like Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal come together for the long-awaited sequel to a Best Picture winner like "Gladiator." On-set spontaneity has always been a great part of some of the best movies ever made, but it's also something that can cross a line. In Scott's latest project, Empire reports that two of the lead actors toed that line well by surprising the cast, crew, and one another with a spontaneous jolt of a moment -- one that was secretly discussed beforehand.
Before Scott's "Gladiator" sequel finally comes to fruition in 2024, the filmmaker is set to release another historical epic. "Napoleon" stars "Beau is Afraid" actor Joaquin Phoenix as the titular French emperor, with "The Crown...

“Napoleon,” Ridley Scott’s historical epic about the French military leader, is nearly here (it’ll debut in theaters on Thanksgiving and on Apple TV+ at a later date). And in a new interview with Empire Magazine, Scott is revealing what made him think of Joaquin Phoenix when it came to the title role. As it turns out, while Scott and Phoenix previously worked together on 2000’s Oscar-winning “Gladiator,” the idea to cast Phoenix as Napoleon came to Scott while he was watching a different film: “Joker.”
“I’m staring at Joaquin and saying, ‘This little demon is Napoleon Bonaparte.’ He looks like him,” Scott told Empire.
Elsewhere in the chat with Empire, Scott compared Napoleon to other historical figures while noting that Bonaparte was “extraordinary.”
“I compare him with Alexander The Great. Adolf Hitler. Stalin. Listen, he’s got a lot of bad s–t under his belt,” he said.

Have you ever looked at the Joker and thought, “Hmm, I bet Mr. J would get along famously with Napoleon Bonaparte?” This line of thinking prompted Ridley Scott to cast Joaquin Phoenix in his next epic, Napoleon. Speaking with Empire about casting Phoenix as the authoritarian leader in the upcoming biographical drama, Scott says the actor’s performance as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips’ Joker is what landed him the role.
“I’m staring at Joaquin and saying, ‘This little demon is Napoleon Bonaparte,'” Scott told Empire magazine. “He looks like him.”
When asked about teaming up with Scott again, Phoenix told the outlet, “The truth is, there was just a very nostalgic idea of working with Ridley again,” he said. “He’s approached me about other things in the past, but nothing that felt like it would be as demanding for both of us. Ridley Scott told Empire magazine that Joaquin Phoenix felt clueless two weeks before cameras were set to roll on their historical epic “Napoleon.” The film marks a long-in-the-works reunion between the director and the Oscar-winning actor, who worked together over two decades ago on “Gladiator.” Phoenix is headlining the film as the French emperor opposite Venessa Kirby as his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais.
“He’ll come in, and you’re fucking two weeks’ out, and he’ll say, ‘I don’t know what to do,’” Scott said about Phoenix. “I’ll say, ‘What?!’ ‘I don’t know what to do.’ Oh God. I said, ‘Come in, sit down.’ We sat for 10 days, all day, talking scene by scene. In a sense, we rehearsed. Absolutely detail by detail.”
Scott went on to call Phoenix “the best player of damaged goods,” which is why he was so perfect to cast as Napoleon.

Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) takes on the titular role in the epic action film Napoleon, heading to theaters on November 22, 2023. The trailer provides our first good look at Phoenix as the French Emperor and opens with chaos in the streets and Marie Antoinette being jeered as she’s led to the guillotine. Additional scenes show Napoleon being given command of the army, in battle, and using the pyramids as target practice.
The trailer arrived with the official poster featuring the tagline: “He came from nothing. He conquered everything.”
The film reunites four-time Oscar nominee Ridley Scott with his Gladiator star. It also features Vanessa Kirby as Josephine as well as Ben Miles as Coulancourt, Ludivine Sagnier as Theresa Cabarrus, and Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras.
