It’s almost 2018, and neither Elm Street nor The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are in the best of shape.
The former was last rebooted back in 2010, when Samuel Bayer resurrected Freddy Krueger for a new generation and, well, let’s just say the end product struggled to leave much of an impression. Wes Craven’s horror masterclass is by no means finished, though, what with plans in place for a second reboot, one that will presumably begin to step out of the shadows in 2018.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, on the other hand, has been steadily pumping out one sequel after another ever since Tobe Hooper’s seminal classic introduced those blood-thirsty cannibals back in ’74. The latest incarnation, Leatherface, took things in a decidedly different direction, though Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s prequel will ultimately be remembered as an uninspired mess.

Dread Central's been covering indie filmmaker Sonny Fernandez's Diy projects almost as long as we've been in business, and he's back with a new trailer and stills from his latest, Lake Villa Vamps.
This particular film is noteworthy as it marks Sonny and the gang at Down Twisted Studios' ninth production and first animated feature. It follows a group of bloodthirsty, murderous vampires as they are tasked to save the world from the mighty Brethren, a werewolf empire intent on taking over.
Full of blood, action, drama, and romance, Lake Villa Vamps was written and completely animated by Dt founder Sonny Fernandez and has all the makings of the usual Down Twisted film. It promises to take viewers places they've never gone before, including a whole new world.
With voice work from Dt veterans Cody Tergesen, Sam Ova, and Edgardo Osorio and introducing a whole new slew of talent including Matthew Brooks,...

Indie filmmaker Sonny Fernandez is back with a new project that's aimed at letting his imagination run free without the worry of budgetary constraints. How to do this, you ask? Well... make it animated! Read on for your first look at the Lake Villa Vamps.
The flick is the first animated film released by Down Twisted Studios, and that means they no longer have a budget problem to worry about. With no budget and no limitations they can finally, truly release all the epic craziness they've been struggling to achieve with their low budget features of the past.
Lake Villa Vamps is animated entirely by Sonny Fernandez and tells the tale of a group of bloodthirsty, psycho vampires who get tapped on the shoulder and told that they've been prophesied to save the world. What follows is an epic tale which will bring them to the very brink of the universe!

Indie filmmaker Sonny Fernandez is at it again and promises his latest project, The Complex, is unlike anything you've ever seen, a mind-bending journey to places you may never come back from! Read on for the details.
The Complex, the latest film from Sonny Fernandez and Down Twisted Studios, stars Cody Tergesen, Sam Ova, Justin Kavlie, and Kim Haarman. It's a sci-fi/horror extravaganza as only the folks who brought you the indie classics The New Girls and The Last Battleground can do it.
The film follows a mysterious man, his face wrapped in bandages with no memory of his past, as he wakes up in a hallway. The only clue to his identity is a number tattooed on his wrist: 109. He is now a prisoner in an endless building with no windows and no clocks, a place where escape seems impossible. He's not alone, however; there are others, and...

Sonny Fernandez, the low (or should I say no?) budget auteur behind a slate of indie films such as The New Girls, Bleed and The Aborted doesn't have top of the line performances or production values in the horror films that he has been producing. However, what his films have that help make up for that is a lot of spirit, heart and, most importantly, originality. Sonny Fernandez has been taking chances with each and every single film he has made to date. He thinks outside of the box and doesn't compromise his vision to fit into someone else's vision. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of Sam Raimi when he started out with The Evil Dead. Can this passionate, no budget horror director score a breakout with his brand of off beat horror films that deliver something unique and distinctive? Only time will tell, but Sonny Fernandez...

No, I'm sorry. There's no such thing as 'Crappy Movie Poster Monday' - I just made that up as an excuse to show you this really awesomely bad independent horror movie poster. Enjoy.
This is the official poster for an independent horror film called Highway 91:
What's that? Maybe I'm taking the poster image out of context? Alright then:
This pretty much speaks for itself, don't you think?
The filmmaker, on his production company's Facebook Page, asks about this DVD cover, musing "I think it's pretty much done...but should I leave the quote or take it off?? Hmmmm...."
The quote on the cover is from that paragon of grammar and journalism, Horror-Movies.ca, that also had this to say about the trailer for Highway 91: "This badboy features, zombies, bullets flying into craniums, brains exploding and of course just utter gore, you know, the good stuff." Which just proves...

The king of no budget features, the master of paper mache, the modern day Todd Sheets, Sonny Fernandez is back... With zombies!!! Fernandez' new film Highway 91 is his most ambitious (and best looking) project yet, using actual latex and digital effects, Sonny has come a long way since fake cardboard bazookas. The story for Highway 91 is simple, a group of survivors must survive serial killers, bloodthirsty scavengers, religious cults, and motha-fucking zombies on their way to an outpost that's supposedly zombie free.

And now for something a bit different ... indie filmmaker Sonny Fernandez, who's currently shooting the (as he describes it) "crazy super-bloody zombie movie" Highway 91, sent over a video montage featuring clips from the film backed up by the first official song from the soundtrack.
What happened was Fernandez's friend Topher, who does much of the music for his flicks, and his other pal Sky grabbed a guitar and decided to play a song. Fernandez says, "They didn’t even take off their zombie make-up. The song came out so good, I decided to make it an official song on the Highway 91 soundtrack, and I took that performance and made it into a music video featuring clips!"
For a look at the director's earlier work, check out Bleed, which has finally been released on a 2-disc special edition remastered DVD that includes commentary from Fernandez as well as stars Cody Tergesen,...

The shopping season starts early if you have a gamer who is also a horror fan on your chopping list. On Tuesday, Namco will release the much anticipated Splatterhouse on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. If you have been following Uncle Creepy on Twitter, you've heard him gush about this game. According to him ... there are lots of things gushing in this title.
If you're not much of a gamer, there aren't many horror goodies to get excited about this week. Unless you're down for an Asylum created CGI whale competing with your turkey (pun intended), along with a couple of other creatures. Rounding up the list is a British import and a cool looking indie offering that looks to make you shed some plasma.

Gory greetings horroryearbook alumni! Welcome to another exciting edition of It Came From The Mailbox, a column where your old pal Brain Hammer reviews whatever random crap the good folks at horroryearbook decide to throw my way. This time around I was contacted directly by my old chum Sonny Fernandez. Sonny is the hardworking mastermind behind Down Twisted Studios. He currently holds the record for being the director whose films I have reviewed the most. I've already reviewed five of his past efforts in previous Icftmb columns. You can check out those reviews here: Bleed, Aborted/Cold Blooded, The Last Battleground.
