The Fever (Maya Da-Rin)
The Fever, director-cum-visual artist Da-Rin’s first full-length feature project, puts a human face to a statistic that hardly captures the genocide Brazil is suffering. This is not just a wonderfully crafted, superb exercise in filmmaking, a multilayered tale that seesaws between social realism and magic. It is a call to action, an unassuming manifesto hashed in the present tense but reverberating as a plea from a world already past us, a memoir of sorts. – Leonardo G. (full review)

At the end of every calendar year, critics rank the best movies of the past 12 months. But why wait that long when first-rate cinema is opening every month? This ongoing list is proof that there’s plenty worth celebrating all year long. While the quality of studio movies tends to peak in the summer and fall seasons, they represent just one small piece of the much larger equation. For those of us tracking a range of quality movies released throughout the year, the hunt often begins much earlier, when many of these titles first surface on the festival circuit. Other indies benefit from savvy marketing strategies, a cavalcade of rave reviews, or awards season buzz, but all of them deserve singling out as the best indies of the year so far.

As a model, Agyness Deyn walked runways for Chanel and graced the cover of British Vogue, but never trained as an actor. You’d never guess, judging by her kinetic performance as swaggering bass player Marielle Hell in Alex Ross Perry’s punk rock epic “Her Smell.” Since officially retiring from modeling in 2012, she learned on the job — not a bad tactic, considering she’s worked with pedigree directors like Terence Davies and the Coen brothers in her relatively short career.
It was on Davies’ “Sunset Song,” in which she plays a farmer’s daughter dealing with abusive men and impending war, that Scottish actor and director Peter Mullan taught her the art of leaving a character’s darkness on the set. While shooting in Luxembourg, she opted to share a car with Mullan every morning, where she wisely picked his brain.

A ferocious Elisabeth Moss elevates Her Smell’s rickety rise-and-fall storyline.
Elisabeth Moss’ incandescent performance, probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen her do before, is the raw, beating, bloody heart of Her Smell, the sixth feature film from writer/director Alex Ross Perry. In her third collaboration with Perry, Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) plays Becky Something, leader of the influential all-female punk rock trio Something She. Once an arena-filler, Something She is playing smaller venues and clearly on the decline, with Becky herself a drug-addled, slow-motion catastrophe whose personal downward spiral is pulling everyone within her circle into the abyss with her.
Bass player Marielle (Agyness Deyn) is fighting to keep the band together while strapped with a cocaine habit of her own; drummer Ali (Gayle Rankin) is the only seemingly straight one but the victim of some of Becky’s most vicious barbs; and Becky’s long-single...

There’s a temptation to call “Her Smell” a greatest-hits compilation of the films of writer-director Alex Ross Perry. After all, it’s got the pitch-black humor of “The Color Wheel,” the narcissism of artists behaving badly from “Listen Up Philip” and the spectacle of Elisabeth Moss as a character spiraling out of control, just like “Queen of Earth.”
There’s more than a little nihilism in these films, delivered with those laughs that get caught in your throat, and Perry couldn’t be less interested in how likable or redeemable his characters might be. Something of a cult filmmaker until now, Perry calls things as he sees them, and he would appear to see them through the bleakest perspective possible.
But this is new material from the challenging auteur, one that reflects a deeper sense of maturity, displayed mainly in the idea of the possibility of redemption. Moss’ Becky Something,...

Women and music are at the center of two new Specialty releases this weekend. Fame knocks the hell out of Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss in a five-alarm fire blaze), a ’90’s indie punk rocker who leads a riot grrrl band that she bombards with near-constant verbal abuse. Those backstage tantrums can do damage to anyone who gets too close. Narcotics or narcissism? Pick your poison. Becky chooses both — and you don’t want to get in her way. Can you really commit to a movie that makes you want to bolt for the exits? You can if it’s this one.

And there are also teen-singer dramas, animated comedies and no less than three big superhero films coming out — perhaps you’ve heard of these crazy kids called “the Avengers?” Here’s what you need to see in April.

We have a trailer for Her Smell, written and directed by Alex Ross Perry (Christopher Robin) and starring Elisabeth Moss as an aging ‘90s rockstar who needs to get her shit together. It premiered at Tiff to good reviews from critics who generally found it uneven but still worthwhile. Christina Newland at Sight and Sound said, “What really elevates the film's darkness is its propensity to find light, redemption and communal love in the destructive throes of the music scene.” So that sounds pretty good.
Also pretty good is the rest of the cast, which includes Dan Stevens, Cara Delevingne, Agyness Deyn, Gayle Rankin, Ashley Benson, Eric Stoltz, and Amber Heard. It hits theaters on April 12.

"You're a mess." "No, you're a mess." Gunpowder & Sky has released a new, full-length trailer for Alex Ross Perry's latest, titled Her Smell, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. This received some rave reviews from critics, another music film following so many others from the festival circuit last year. Elisabeth Moss (who also starred in Alex Ross Perry's films Queen of Earth and Listen Up Philip) plays a self-destructive punk rocker named Becky Something who struggles with sobriety while trying to recapture the creative inspiration that led her band to success. The impressive cast includes Cara Delevingne, Dan Stevens, Agyness Deyn, Gayle Rankin, Ashley Benson, Dylan Gelula, Amber Heard, Eric Stoltz, with Virginia Madsen. This looks like a wild 'n crazy punk rock drama with all the usual punk nonsense. Here's the full-length official trailer for Alex Ross Perry's Her Smell, direct from G&S's YouTube...

Elisabeth Moss plays guitar and sings a grungy anthem about flirting with death in the trailer for Her Smell, a new film by Alex Ross Perry. Her blonde hair and the tone of the song, a cover of the Only Ones’ “Another Girl Another Planet,” recall Hole and Courtney Love. But despite the glee she feels onstage, the clip shows that Moss’ character, Becky Something, has a darker side.
“Becky Something, she’s a woman,” Agyness Deyn’s character, Marielle, tells her. Something rejoins, “She’s a user.” “You’re a mother.

Elisabeth Moss’s latest role has her flirting with death…or at least singing about it.
In “Her Smell,” Moss plays a former ’90s punk rock star named Becky Something. The singer and her band, Something She, once filled arenas but now she struggles with addiction, motherhood, getting older and fading fame.
“I always flirt with death, I look ill, but I don’t care about it,” Moss sings in this first trailer for the film. “I think I’m on another world with you.”

Elisabeth Moss has become one of television’s most powerhouse performers thanks to her Emmy-winning role on Hulu’s drama series “The Handmaid’s Tale” — not to mention seven previous Emmy nominations (six for “Mad Men” and one for “Top of the Lake”) — and now she’s about to become the same on the big screen thanks to “Her Smell.” The punk music drama reunites Moss with her “Listen Up Philip” and “Queen of Earth” director Alex Ross Perry, but never has the actress gotten this volatile and monstrous of a role to sink her teeth into.
“Her Smell” stars Moss as Becky Something, the lead singer of the all-female punk group Something She. Perry’s script uses a five-act structure that tells Becky’s entire story through fiv extended scenes that match the character’s drug-raddled claustrophobia and emotional release. In a not-so-bold prediction, when the books are closed on 2019 films, few performances will stand out as much as Elisabeth Moss in Her Smell. Alex Ross Perry’s punk epic tackles a fierce range of emotions across its five intimate scenes as we follow Becky Something (Moss), a rock ‘n’ roll legend who is dealing with a different side (and level) of fame. The director, with his team of composer Keegan DeWitt, cinematographer Sean Price Williams, and editor Robert Greene, create a music film no other and now the first trailer has arrived ahead of an April release.

Distinct from musicals, music biopics, and documentaries, fiction films about the challenges faced by musicians in practicing their craft have been around since the earliest days of cinema. From The Jazz Singer and A Star Is Born to recent releases such as Not Fade Away and Inside Llewyn Davis, the tribulations of musicianship have long fascinated filmmakers and audiences alike. Although these struggles are typically emphasized for dramatic purposes, rarely is the viewer subjected to the downward spiral of one of these artists for the overwhelming majority of the runtime, let alone with such intoxicating lucidity; a feat that Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell accomplishes with flying colors.

In “Her Smell,” Elisabeth Moss tears into the role of Becky Something, a strung-out hellion indie rock star of the early ’90s, like an angry lioness ripping through a slab of raw meat. Just taking on the part of a rock ‘n’ roller represents a major change of pace for Moss, who has tended to play cautious and pensive characters. But in “Her Smell,” Moss doesn’t just “let loose”. She dives headfirst into crazy, abandoned, fuck-it-all grunge narcissism. She plays Becky as a walking train wreck of borderline personality disorder who has elevated herself into a theatrically self-destructive druggie dominatrix. Becky may be an unholy terror, but that doesn’t mean she’s not a star. The stardom and the rancid solipsism are two sides of the same spectacularly damaged coin, and Moss herself has the star quality, and the fearlessness, to pull that off.

It’s easy to hate Becky Something, the hurricane of rock n’ roll destruction at the center of Alex Ross Perry’s “Her Smell.” Played with ferocious intensity by actress and producer Elisabeth Moss, the star’s third teaming with Perry sees Moss hitting another high note after the pair’s vicious “Queen of Earth,” but it also comes with a timely addiction narrative that she was eager to get right.
Told in a five-act structure and interspersed with flashbacks, “Her Smell” unfolds over nearly a decade as Becky and her bandmates struggle with the price of fame and creative freedom as their band, Something She, rises and falls, mostly due to Becky’s whims.
As the band cycles through bad gigs (three out of five of the film’s acts take place in grimy backstages) and even worse trips, Becky is forced to grapple with the havoc she’s wreaked on everyone around her,...

Benjamin Naishtat’s ’Rojo’ still leads the way.
Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell and Simon Jaquemet’s The Innocent are the latest titles to land on Screen’s Toronto Platform jury grid, and have moved into third and fourth place respectively to date.
Her Smell achieved a 2.8 average, splitting the opinion of Screen’s grid critics. Both Justin Chang of the La Times and Radheyan Simonpillai of Now/CTV gave it top marks of four stars (‘excellent’); Vincent Le Leurch of Le Film Français was less enamoured, giving it one star (‘poor’).

Moss plays the monstrous, self-destructive singer of an all-girl band overtaken by younger, prettier rivals in Alex Ross Perry’s unsettling punk drama
When the party’s over, who has to clean up? That’s the question posed by Alex Ross Perry’s punk drama, an unfocused if convincing account of life at the tail end of the 90s alt-rock boom. Resembling a fictionalised, feminised version of Dig!, the documentary classic about the demise of Brian Jonestown Massacre and their lead singer Anton Newcombe, Her Smell is built around a performance of near-unwatchable toxicity by Elisabeth Moss, who channels a combination of Courtney Love and Heath Ledger’s Joker with her spiteful, slowly imploding rock star.
Moss plays Becky Something, the lead singer of all-girl band Something She, one-time Spin cover stars who are now being lapped on the toilet circuit by younger, hungrier, prettier outfits. Much of the blame...

Here's the trailer for a new horror thriller called Patient Zero that tries to do something a little new and different with the zombie genre. The story follows a man played by Matt Smith who has the unique ability to speak "the Infected's new language" and leads the last survivors on a hunt to find Patient Zero and a cure. Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) is helping him on his journey. The big twist is, the infected don't feel they are diseased, they feel that they are the solution and the cure to get rid of the human infection.
This actually looks like a solid movie worth checking out. It was directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky and this is the synopsis:
In this new pandemic thriller, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected,...

"Something new and smart is evolving..." Sony has debuted the trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Patient Zero, another attempt at mixing up the zombie genre with new ideas. The twist in this one is that one guy has the unique ability to speak "the Infected's new language" and leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Matt Smith stars as Morgan, the one with the skill of communicating with the undead/zombie/creatures but goes up against a formidable opponent when they find The Professor, played by Stanley Tucci. The cast includes Natalie Dormer, Clive Standen, Agyness Deyn, John Bradley, Colin McFarlane, Pippa Bennett-Warner, and James Northcote. As interesting as this "pandemic" film seems, there's so much of the usual tropes in this it doesn't seem like it really has anything new to offer. Here's the first official trailer for Stefan Ruzowitzky's Patient Zero,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The science is ludicrous, the story is almost entirely free of drama, and the finale descends into the hoariest, most ridiculous clichés of the genre. But the future smart-house porn is lovely. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big science fiction fan

A clever but unformed hunk of speculative science-fiction, Lennart Ruff’s “The Titan” is essentially two parallel stories of survival that are being told at the same time. One is physical and intimate; the other is abstract and infinite. Strangely, they’re both far more interesting on their own than they are cut together, but each of them poses a handful of intriguing questions about our instinct for self-preservation, asking us to locate the point at which trauma might change the basic foundation of who (or what) we are. If only these questions were posed intriguingly, and not just churned through the machinations of genre shlock that doesn’t have the courage to be as smart as either of its stories require it to be.
The year is 2048, and the Earth isn’t going to be inhabitable for all that much longer. It’s the usual cocktail of apocalyptic trouble: nuclear war,...

Netflix has released a new trailer for Sam Worthington's upcoming sci-fi action thriller The Titan. I really like the concept of the film and it looks like it's going to make for an exciting movie.
The story is set in the near future and Earth's lifespan is coming to an end. For mankind to continue their existence they need to find a new home and that home is the Saturn moon of Titan. Worthington plays a man who signs up for a military program that will transformer him into an enhanced human called "Titans" who would be capable of living on that moon, which they hope to colonize. As you might expect things don't go as planned.
The movie also stars Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson, Agyness Deyn, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Corey Johnson. Here's the synopsis:
A military family takes part in a ground-breaking experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration.

"The goal? To relocate humanity to another planet and avoid extinction." Netflix has debuted a new official trailer for the weird sci-fi action film titled The Titan, starring Sam Worthington. Set in the near future, the plot is about a military program to develop superhumans called "Titans" to help us colonize Saturn's moon Titan, but the side effects are deadly. Worthington plays a hot shot Air Force pilot who becomes the first successful Titan creation, but things start to go dangerously awry as time goes on. The full cast includes Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson, Agyness Deyn, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Corey Johnson. This trailer is thankfully better than the first trailer, but this still just looks so frickin' weird, and they don't even show him in his fully finished alien form by the end. I don't even know if I want to watch this? Does anyone? Here's the official Netflix trailer...

Good news, freshman dramas! Perennial Emmy nominees “Better Call Saul” and “House of Cards” have taken the year off for creative reasons, opening the door for new shows to break through in Best Drama Series. As a refresher, last year’s seven nominees were “Better Call Saul,” “The Crown,” “House of Cards,” “Stranger Things,” “This Is Us,” “Westworld” and eventual winner “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “Game of Thrones” is expected to make a triumphant return to the category after being ineligible last year, but which brand new dramas could take advantage of the changing Emmy tides?
Netflix boasts a vast array of first-year gems, including “Altered Carbon,” “Mindhunter,” “Ozark” and “Seven Seconds.” “Ozark” looks to be a strong contender at the Emmys after earning nominations at the SAG Awards for leads Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, and the Golden Globes for Bateman.
