Meet your new favorite musical. When Kimberly Akimbo premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company last December, it was a breath of fresh air, an intimate show about teenage misfits and the unreliable adults in their world that balanced hilarious comedy with aching poignancy and quirks unfailingly grounded in emotional truth. Transferring intact to Broadway, this small-scale charmer has not only retained but enriched its distinctive qualities, sweeping in as a burst of invigorating originality in a sea of repurposed movies, jukebox compilations and revivals.
Ok, so strictly speaking this is not an original work but a reinvention of David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2001 play about a lonely teenager suffering from a rare fast-aging disease like progeria, which makes her age at four and a half times the normal rate. She’s a 16-year-old — the average life expectancy of her disease — with the body of a septuagenarian.

Quinn Shephard may be only 27, but she’s already a veteran of the film festival circuit. At 22, she was lauded at Tribeca for her feature debut, “Blame,” which she also wrote (she started the screenplay in high school) and in which she starred with Chris Messina. Shephard began acting when she was 3 years old. “I just grew up feeling really comfortable on sets; like sets were my happy place,” she says, burying any clichés about troubled child actors. In middle school, she started making short films. “Film was the intersection between all the different kinds of art. I always loved visual arts and music, performance, writing — like just all the kinds of storytelling — and film was the one place where you could kind of do everything.”
Her sophomore feature, “Not Okay,” debuts July 29 on Hulu. The sharp satire explores the impact of notoriety and ambition via social media, specifically through...

In Hulu’s female-driven reboot of High Fidelity, costume designer Sarah Laux found the opportunity to tackle her first TV series, honing trendy, vintage looks for a set of music-loving Brooklynites.
Based on a beloved novel by Nick Hornby—which Stephen Frears previously adapted into a classic film—the series centers on Rob Brooks (Zoë Kravitz), a music-obsessed native of Brooklyn Heights, who runs a record store, while struggling with a series of failed relationships.
An Obie Award-winner known primarily for her work in theater—both on and Off-Broadway—Laux came to the project as a result of her longstanding relationship with Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood. “Colleen is an old friend and mentor for like 14 years. I’ve done some stuff with her, and did a feature that she recommended me for,” the costume designer explains. “I just sent her an email and said, ‘I’ve been doing a lot of theater lately,...
