March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

In "Alice, Darling," Academy Award-nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") plays Alice, a woman dealing with a psychologically abusive boyfriend named Simon (Charlie Carrick). Things come to a head when she heads off on a secret vacation with her girlfriends (Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku), who don't know about her relationship. As Alice slowly begins to fall apart free of Simon's manipulative efforts, her friends attempt to break through the walls she's built around her.
Then Simon shows up without warning.
It's a harrowing story and one that is all too familiar for so many people. Anna Kendrick is perhaps more well-known for her comedic and musical roles in films like "Pitch Perfect," "Into the Woods," and "Trolls," so this might seem like a bit of a departure. It certainly did to "Hot Ones" host Sean Evans who asked her about it when she appeared on the show. If...

Alice, Darling is a new psychological thriller starring Anna Kendrick, who plays a movie role like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Normally cast as the upbeat, happy-go-lucky girl or a sidekick in Twilight, Kendrick plays the role of Alice, a young woman in an emotionally abusive relationship. When Alice has to lie to her boyfriend so she can spend a week on vacation with her female friends, she’s forced to confront the true nature of her relationship and deal with her friends’ concerns.
If Kendrick’s performance looks authentic in the film, that may be because she has real-life experience in that department. Kendrick has revealed in her press interviews that she was once a victim of emotional abuse herself.

Alice, Darling is a film directed by Mary Nighy and starring Anna Kendrick.
Anna Kendrick stars in this movie which is a great acting treat for any dramatic actress. She exhibits all her talent which is indisputable in this drama about abuse.
About the Movie Alice, Cariño (2022)
Fancy a drama about male abuse? Here you have one called “Alice, Darling”, a movie written by Alanna Francis which, thanks to a good screenplay, the goals of the movie are reached in an intelligent manner… that is also manipulative (as the plot reveals to us).
This is a story about psychological abuse that is well narrated and is also a “social denouncement” and you need to be prepared for this. A drama and a denouncement featuring three women who defend themselves and a friend.
Technically this has a very good screenplay that goes shaping and offering the keys to the story very...

Alice, Darling (Mary Nighy)
Everything you need to know about Alice’s (Anna Kendrick) state of mind concerning the abuse inflicted by her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) are the words “it’s not like he hurts me.” We feel Sophie’s (Wunmi Mosaku) wince in our bones—”hurt” doesn’t only become noteworthy when wrought by a physical altercation. Alice is glued to her phone to ensure she doesn’t miss a call or text. She wakes up super early to apply make-up and style her hair to Simon’s preference. Parrots all the soundbites he uses to police her eating habits about the toxicity of sugar. And literally pulls her hair out of her head whenever she has a spare second...

The new film starring Anna Kendrick is one of the few visual narratives to deftly handle the insidious effects of an emotionally abusive relationship
If not guided by an ominous score and a remarkable lead performance of brittle, jittery anxiety, it might take you a third of Alice, Darling, a new film starring Anna Kendrick as a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, to realize something is wrong. Alice’s relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), a thirtysomething Toronto-based artist with a suave British accent, could seem innocuous on a clue-by-clue basis. In isolation, a “thinking of me?” text with a kissing face emoji, or the way he drapes his arm over her like a cape, or his chiding to raise her professional ambitions, could seem like affection. The tell is in Alice’s frayed hair – barrel-curled into, as her friend Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) puts it, an outdated Gossip Girl coif and,...

Sony Pictures Classics present Florian Zeller’s The Son on 554 screens, an emotional family drama that folllows the director’s 2020 Oscar-winning The Father. As with that film, The Son is adapted from Zeller’s own stage play along with Christopher Hampton. Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath and Anthony Hopkins star in the cautionary tale of a family struggling to reunite,
Jackman is Peter, whose hectic life with new baby and new partner Beth (Kirby) is upended when ex-wife Kate (Dern) appears to discuss their troubled teenage son Nicholas (McGrath). Peter strives to care for Nicholas and be the father he would have liked but discovers that by reaching for the past to correct mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold onto Nicholas in the present. The Son received a ten-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival where it premiered. Deadline review here.

So, a couple of weeks ago we saw the “Mr. Nice-Guy” of the movies, Tom Hanks channel his inner grump as A Man Called Otto. And now a new release has another actor “pushing” out of their cinema “comfort zone”, though maybe not as jarring as Mr. H. For the last few years she’s made her “name” in bouncy musicals (even a music franchise) and frothy, but usually witty, “rom-coms”. From this film’s title, many moviegoers may think this effort falls in the latter category. And they would be mistaken. Granted it concerns modern relationships and a romance that, to put it lightly, has taken a turn. As you might guess, today’s tech “amps up” the problems. Perhaps that’s why there’s more than a touch of irony in its title, along with general menace, with what should be a phrase of endearment, Alice, Darling.

Alice (Anna Kendrick) doesn’t see herself as a victim of abuse. In fact, she insists she isn’t. Why then when Alice and her friends (played by Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku) come across a poster for a missing girl presumed to have been killed by someone close to her, can she not shake off the spectral feeling of connection to this total stranger’s tragedy? After all, she says to her friends and herself, it’s not like her boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) “hurts me or anything”.
What Alice can’t yet see – and what forms the core revelation of the understated but poignant Alice, Darling – is that abuse is not always a single action. It lives and breathes within her relationship with Simon. It is the ever-present, sickly dread that resides in the pit of Alice’s stomach, which dictates that she must cater to Simon’s every...

Kendrick impresses as a woman being deprived of emotional oxygen by a toxic boyfriend, though Mary Nighy’s film gets distracted by a subplot
Anna Kendrick gives a vehement, self-aware lead performance in this Gaslight-style suspense drama about a young woman trapped in a coercive, abusive relationship from screenwriter Alanna Francis and debut feature director Mary Nighy. There are some edge-of-the-seat moments and interestingly subtle tonal inflexions, though the story spends time on a contrived subplot about a missing girl, time that might have been better devoted to developing the central thriller storyline.
Alice (Kendrick) is in a toxic relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), an arrogant, controlling man with an uncertain career as an artist, in constant need of reassurance and always tracking Alice’s movements. The thriller drama stars Kendrick as the titular Alice, a woman who’s stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick).
In previous interviews, the actor has opened up about her personal connection to the project, sharing her personal experience of surviving “emotional abuse”.

Anna Kendrick isn’t letting anything stay up in the air when it comes to her personal life.
The Oscar-nominated actress and star of “Alice, Darling,” which she also executive produces, has been quite transparent about her emotional connection with the new drama, which spotlights a psychologically abusive romantic relationship. Kendrick plays the titular Alice, who untangles herself from toxic partner Simon (Charlie Carrick) while on a weekend trip away with her friends (Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku). Mary Nighy (“Industry”) makes her directorial debut with the feature, which premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters this week.
Kendrick started the “Alice, Darling” press tour by detailing her own experience with emotional and psychological abuse by a former partner. The “Up in the Air” and “Pitch Perfect” alum credited “Alice, Darling” for helping her “normalize” the experience and act as a therapeutic way to process her grief and recovery.

Emotional and verbal abuse can often be silent evils — affecting people, maybe even some that we love, in stealth and threatening their emotional well-being and daily functionality in ways we can't even begin to understand. Mary Nighy's directorial debut "Alice Darling" takes us into the life of someone affected by this insidious demand for power at all costs, and it does so through the intricacies of the life pulled apart by incessant abuse. The little habits, the things one remembers to do, the things they don't. How do all of those things keep the peace in your relationship?
The film stars Anna Kendrick, whose ease at slipping into more quiet dramatic roles is an asset to the story because it hinges so much on the little things. "Alice Darling" doesn't pull punches when it comes to non-physical abuse, and a marriage of solid direction, writing, and performance gives it...

Anna Kendrick has been well-known for playing quirky characters and for playing a hopeless romantic in rom-coms who gets herself in uncomfortable situations in order for her character to find true love. She earned her stardom by playing Bella’s friend Jessica in ‘Twilight,’ and she has often reappeared in other ‘Twilight Films.’ After that, she received other film roles and eventually starred with George Clooney and Vera Farmiga in the movie ‘Up in the Air,’ and received her Oscar nomination for the supporting character of Natalie Keener, a woman who fires people over the internet while Clooney played as the protagonist who fires them in person. However, she still ended up playing rom-com roles in movies such as ‘Pitch Perfect’ where she played Beca. However, Mary Nighy’s powerful directorial debut ‘Alice, Darling’ will make executive producers think twice about casting Anna Kendrick in romantic comedies.

A few minutes into “Alice, Darling,” audiences may be reminded of how 2020’s “The Invisible Man” opened: Anna Kendrick creeps out of bed at dawn, taking pains not to wake the partner we briefly assume she’s about to flee. But whereas that Elisabeth Moss vehicle was a monster movie given heft by its abusive-boyfriend backstory, director Mary Nighy’s feature debut puts a woman’s difficult exit from a dangerous relationship front and center. This is a quietly powerful drama about psychological manipulation and damage, receiving a year-end qualifying run at the AMC Sunset 5 in West Hollywood on Dec. 30 before expanding to AMC theaters nationwide on Jan. 20.

Alice, the titular protagonist of “Alice, Darling,” cannot think of lying to her boyfriend, Simon, without throwing up. Yet she insists to her friends, who have noticed her gradual withdrawal, that everything is fine. They love each other.
Sure, Simon makes her feel awful about everything: her friends, her eating habits, her job. He regularly guilts her into sex and sexting. He’s winnowed her life down to the essential, arduous project of stroking his ego. But he doesn’t hit her, rarely yells at her. So what does she have to complain about?
“Alice, Darling,” the debut feature from director Mary Nighy, picks at these common ideas — that abuse only looks a certain way, that mental scars cannot be as serious as physical ones — until they unravel. Alanna Francis (“The Rest of Us”) has written a tastefully subtle story of intimate partner violence. As Alice, Anna Kendrick hits her notes well.

Anna Kendrick has opened up about how making her forthcoming film Alice, Darling helped her recover from her own difficult relationship.
The process of filming the thriller, which deals with psychological and emotional abuse, was a “cathartic” experience for the actor.
“The movie was so personal, there was a point where I was like ‘Oh, I don’t know if this is too soon to be doing this role,” the 37-year-old said during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
The Pitch Perfect star told Clarkson on Monday (19 December) that the film discusses “the power of friendship in the way that you can get through things if you have the right people in your corner”.
“I know that’s how I got out and how I started my recovery,” Kendrick added.

Kendrick added: “That was kind of the reason that every person from every department had decided to take on the job and was really pouring their heart and themselves into it.

This premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival recently, and also stopped by the Philadelphia and Whistler Film Festivals this fall. A young woman trapped in an abusive relationship becomes the unwitting participant in an intervention staged by her two closest friends. Slowly, she starts to fray the cords of codependency that bind her… Anna Kendrick stars as Alice, with a cast including Wunmi Mosaku, Kaniehtiio Horn, Charlie Carrick, Markjan Winnick, and Daniel Stolfi. This looks outstanding, so tense at times it really seems like a horror film. A must watch new trailer.

Mary Nighy made her feature directorial debut with psychological thriller “Alice, Darling” and as she explains it, it was the desire to illuminate the title character’s inner secrets.
“When I was sent the script by Katie Nolan and Lindsey Tapscott, I read it and I felt like it was really interesting to see a character, in the character of Alice, who was struggling with so much internally,” Nighy said at The Wrap’s and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film festival. “As a director, it’s quite interesting to try and bring what’s hidden out into the light because it’s quite difficult to visualize what’s happening inside someone.”

‘Alice, Darling’ Review: Anna Kendrick Gives Her Best Performance in Weak Abusive Relationship Drama
While not quite the taut thriller it’s been billed as, “Alice, Darling” centerpieces Anna Kendrick in her best performance since “Up in the Air” made her a star (and Oscar nominee) in 2009. Kendrick is in every scene of Mary Nighy’s drama about a woman (Alice) whose reality comes crashing down over the course of a girls’ trip to a lakeside cabin: The reality is that she’s in an abusive relationship with a Newcastle artist named Simon (Charlie Carrick), who has a chokehold on her every move and decision, from her whereabouts to what she’s wearing.
from self-deception and denial to revelation and escape.
The movie opens with a close-up on Alice’s face, appearing pensive while floating underwater. It’s the sort of vaguely metaphoric shot we know will serve as a bookend, and it eventually does as the movie wraps up. Cut to Alice in the city,...

The uptight friend, the quirky leading lady, the semi-rebellious college radio DJ who harnesses the melodic potential of red solo cups: These are the roles Anna Kendrick has been relegated to for most of her career, an eclectic mix of largely comedic vehicles. Even after the actress nabbed an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Up in the Air, she seemed, still, more likely to portray a Beca than a Natalie.
But in Mary Nighy’s emotionally disquieting debut Alice, Darling, Kendrick transfixes, affirming that she has always had depth and range. The actress plays Alice, a woman made vulnerable and emotionally battered by an insidiously abusive relationship. Kendrick starts by channeling a fragility, as if Alice were made of china and any sudden moves from her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) or friends Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku) and Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) could shatter her.

And literally pulls her hair out of her head whenever she has a spare second of freedom because the pain is all that stops her from acknowledging her crippling shame.

Weekend grosses popped higher for Oscar Best Picture nominees led by Licorice Pizza, Belfast and Drive My Car.
Warner Bros. hasn’t reported grosses for Dune but at circa $150K as per industry sources it’s quadruple last weekend on more screens. Licorice Pizza and Belfast also had a big jump in runs so fatter grosses aren’t surprising. Others like West Side Story from Disney/20th are waiting on a big expansion. While total box office dollars for best picture contenders in the long haul to Oscar night won’t be setting any records, this post nom/Super Bowl Sunday/Valentine’s Day frame saw some nice moves.
Licorice Pizza from MGM/Uar went wide for the first time in its run on 1,977 screens, grossing an est. $922K, for a cume to date of $13.9M. That’s a 43% bump for the Paul Thomas Anderson pic from 786 runs last weekend.
