TIFF continues to build out its speaker lineup despite the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes barring a number of participants from this year’s 48th edition.
Of note, actor Viggo Mortensen will appear on stage in Toronto to discuss his feature directorial debut, the western The Dead Don’t Hurt, a movie he also stars in with Garret Dillahunt, Danny Huston and Vicky Krieps. Despite the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mortensen will appear at TIFF under the guise of director. He’ll be joined by producer Jeremy Thomas and Regina Solórzano. Global rights are available on The Dead Don’t Hurt; HanWay Films is handling.
Also having onstage conversations in the Visionaries section are Oscar winners Guillermo del Toro and Spike Lee.
Last week, TIFF announced that Pedro Almodovar, who is already receiving a tribute at the fest, Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and the stars of Korean disaster epic, Concrete Utopia, are already set to have sitdown conversations.

Panelists emphasise importance of diverse voices on Cannes panel.
The non-fiction community isn’t stuck in a “liberal bubble,” said Kathy Im, director journalism & media, The MacArthur Foundation, during a Cannes Doc Day panel of documentary experts discussing the challenges and opportunities of making non-fiction films in the “post-truth” era.
“I don’t think that we should apologise that we care about human rights, we care about health care, we think climate change is real,” Im said. “These things are universal. If we look carefully at some of the documentaries that are being made in the Us, if you look at the body of work supported by liberal foundations or public television, there is quite a bit of diversity.”
Diversity of voices and reaching a diverse audience is important, added Carrie Lozano, director of Ida’s Enterprise Documentary Fund. “I want to urge filmmakers that you can be creative to be more universal. We can tell...

The Cannes Marche featured an enhanced documentary offering this year.
Producer Lawrence Bender remembered that it was a decade ago at Cannes when he launched Davis Guggenheim’s An Inconvenient Truth [pictured], the climate change film that starred Al Gore. “Every once in a while you get lucky, lightning strikes, we didn’t change the world but we added a few bricks to the process,” he said. “Millions of people saw the movie a lot was affected… We have made an enormous amount of progress.”
Bender was speaking at the first Doc Day conference at Cannes yesterday, organised by the Marche’s Doc Corner and The Ford Foundation’s Just Films with Screen International as the media partner. The Day had the theme of Global Awareness For Social Justice: Impact-Making Documentaries.
