Special effects maestro Brian Cox and producer and costume designer Catherine Martin were both honoured at the Australian Production Design Guild Awards on Sunday.
Cox, whose 40-year career has included credits such as The Matrix and Moulin Rouge, was awarded the Canal Road Artisan Lifetime Achievement Award, while Martin -Australia’s most prolific Academy Award winner – was recognised with the Cameron Creswell Outstanding Contribution to Design Award.
The awards, which celebrated their 10th anniversary, also marked the end of an era as Apdg president and founder George Liddle announced he was stepping down after more than a decade at the helm.
Speaking at the virtual event, he said the future looked positive for the guild.
“Technological advances change the way we work, but they are mere tools,” he said.
“The creative design mind remains. That means design practitioners will remain an essential part of all successful productions in the live performance,...

Former ABC Studios Evp Barry Jossen, now an ABC Studios-based producer, has sold a second project, ABC drama Sins. Written by Philip Levens, it is a dark, twisted, sexy soap about a modern day black widow who seduces a wealthy man while struggling to stay one step ahead of his District Attorney sister and the ghosts of her past. Sins joins Jossen’s legal drama with Barry Schindel at CBS. ABC is taking on another Latin American format with Los Roldán, an hourlong dramedy based on the 2004 Argentine telenovela/comedy series. It hails from another former ABC Studios executive, Svp drama Michael McDonald, who stepped down in July to become an ABC Studios-based producer. The Los Roldán adaptation, written by Sarah Hooper (UK’s Shameless), will be set in Miami and feature a predominantly Latin cast. It is expected to stay true to the Upstairs/Downstairs-themed original, in...

Sky One’s new comedy drama Mount Pleasant started last night with them gloating a star-studded cast and a show written by Sarah Hooper off of Shameless. The shows lead role of Lisa is played by Sally Lindsay who was reportedly really happy and excited by the new show and Sky One website even claims she ‘raves’ about it. The first episode begins with Lisa being dropped off in town by her husband of ten years Dan (Daniel Ryan) and a tiny piece of dialogue that reads, Dan, “have a nice afternoon”, then Lisa, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”, and then in unison they both say,...
