Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Shah Rukh Khan…and….well Shah Rukh Khan
Directed by Maneesh Sharma
Rating: ****(4 Stars)
Welcome home, Shah Rukh. What a triumphant return to form for an actor whose career has been lately beleaguered by sub-standard scripts and mediocre directors. This time Shah Rukh is in the mood to kill….And we don’t mean that just as a metaphor. As this far-from-frothy take on the very complex star-fan relationships develops into a ominous cat-and-mouse chase, Shah Rukh grips both the characters—yes, for those who came in late he plays both the star and the fan—in a firm grasp that makes us …simply gasp.
Shah Rukh is in full command of both the characters. He gives both Aryan and Gaurav ample room to grow, grow apart and then clash in ways that shows what skilful scripting can do to a superstar’s yearning to excel.

The hammer is a favourite weapon of aggression among the characters who form the immensely unlikeable family in Titli.
They use the hammer to smash faces and in one sequence to even smash the hand of a loved one.
But it’s the hammering of the individual’s self-esteem that Titli hits you the hardest with. Titli, played by newcomer Shashank Arora, the youngest of three brother in a low-life Delhi family of car-jacking criminals, takes his newly-wedded wife to her lover, watches them disappear in the bedroom and sits quietly waiting for the couple to finish its business.
It’s a moment where the silence of anguished helplessness pierces the irony of the plot.
This is not your martyr husband Ajay Devgn from Sanjay Leeela Bhansali Hum…Dil De Chuke Sanam leading his reluctant bride back to her beloved. This is a world stripped of sublimity and grace, of...

By sheer coincidence, three of this year's National awards winners Sujoy Ghosh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rituprano Ghosh are shooting for two different films together but would be joining up to travel to Delhi to collect their National awards together. The plan is for Namrata Rao (who has received the National award for best editing in Kahaani) and Vidya Balan to join the Kahaani team for a party after the National awards on May 3. Says Sujoy, "Yup, we are all going from Kolkata together for the National awards. Me, my director Rituparno Ghosh and Nawazuddin who is in Kolkata shooting for Buddadeb Dasgupta's film, we'll all go together to Delhi. In fact the schedule for Ritu's film Vyomkesh starring me has been delayed only because we're taking a break to go to Delhi for the National awards." Sujoy says Kahaani would remain special for the team. He has decided not to rush into the sequel.

Here is more from our Toifa special reports this time with director Sujoy Ghosh. Now this was quite the free-ranging interview as Sujoy Ghosh, completely jet-lagged by long flight to Vancouver, was clutching to his coffee and sinking into the way-too-comfy couch. After an onslaught of photos and autographs, we got talking about the interconnectedness between editing and scripting, and the glorious character of Kolkatta in Kahaani.
How did you construct the city as a character of this narrative in Kahaani? Did you look to any Ray films for inspiration?
It’s basically what you know, I was born in Calcutta and grew up in Calcutta, so I knew the city well. Plus we had this whole motive of Maa Durga, running through the whole film, so that’s the whole reason for doing it in Cal, because I know the city. I suppose Kahaani could have been easily be set in Vancouver also,...
