Surfer and surfboard shaper Dennis Pang was born in 1953 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The son of a Waikiki surfer and beach boy, Pang first learned how to surf at age nine. Dennis was a junior divisions finalist in the 1967 Makaha International contest, competed in the 1970 World Surfing Championships in Victoria, Australia; and finished ninth in the 1986 Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event at Waimea Bay, Hawaii. Pang began shaping surfboards in 1969 and got his first steady shaping job with Surfline Hawaii in 1976, which was also the same year that Pang received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii. Moreover, legendary surfer Gerry Lopez was an early shaping mentor for Dennis. Pang shaped surfboards for such companies as Lightning Bolt, Local Motion, and Town and Country before eventually starting his own company called Dennis Pang Surf Designs. Among the notable champion surfers that Dennis has made surfboards for are Wayne Bartholomew, Sunny Garcia, Michael Ho, Dane Kealoha, Larry Bertlemann, Dave Rastovich, and Christian Fletcher.
