Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)
Directed by Daniel Stamm
Starring Patrick Fabian (Interview), Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Tony Bentley
When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort,...

Zombies of Mass Destruction
DVD
Director: Kevin Hamedani
Starring: Janette Armand, Doug Fahl, Cooper Hopkins, Bill Johns, Russell Hodgkinson
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: March 23, 2010
For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we'll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.
For the last of these 8 Films to Die For, I chose to save Zombies of Mass Destruction. The general idea of zombies -- some form of infection...

Warning - This post contains major spoilers!
My absolute favorite film genre is the zombie movie (along with French new wave and rip-n-strip wrestling) and I think I've seen every single zombie or zombie-related movie ever made, including the Italian classics, low-budget independents, and of course the entire series from zombie God George Romero (the original Dawn of the Dead is the greatest horror film ever made.)
I've even seen Emmanuelle on Zombie Island ... soft and hardcore versions.
My point is that I thought there was nothing a zombie movie could do to surprise me ... until I saw Zombies of Mass Destruction.
Zmd is guilty of the usual low-budget zombie film offenses - bad (sometimes horrendous) acting and an uneasy mix of horror and comedy (which Shaun of the Dead did perfectly, but is a tricky proposition). But it has something no other zombie film has ever given us - gay heroes.

Now in it's fourth year, Horrorfest, the annual cinematic showcase for After Dark Films, has established something of a reputation as a platform for fresh, daring filmmakers to get themselves noticed. More than just a simple market for nasties, the After Dark label stands for quality by way of authenticity, delivering horror films by genre lovers for genre lovers. In addition to this yearly frightfest, After Dark recently announced a new venture to develop their own projects, in partnership with SyFy, NBC, and Lionsgate, titled After Dark Originals. Aiming to do for horror what the Sundance Institute did for the American indie, the eight slate series will begin production next month with a view towards theatrical release later this fall.
Titles featured in this year's Horrorfest include:
The Reeds
Starring: Anna Brewster, O-t Fagbenle, Will Mellor, Danny Caltagirone, Scarlett Johnson, Emma Catherwood, Geoff Bell

The extent of wit in the new horror comedy Zombies Of Mass Destruction can be summed up in its title and tagline (‘A Political Zomedy’ –ha ha). Mixing political and social commentary with undead shenanigans is a novel idea and Zombieland and Shaun Of The Dead proved that Zombie comedies can work when done right. While George Romero was no stranger to political messages hidden in his horror films, Zombies Of Mass Destruction makes blatant political statements about everything from abortion to religious zealotry to the suspicious treatment of homosexuals and Muslims in post-911 America. Unfortunately Director-writer Kevin Hamedani’s ambitious debut, though goofy and good-natured enough, is hampered by a too-broad script where 4 out of 5 of its jokes fall completely flat. Zombieland it’s not, but thanks to that film’s success, Zombies Of Mass Destruction is the one Horrorfest film that I can see having some big-screen afterlife post-fest.

Zombies of Mass Destruction is one of six other films that have been officially announced as participating in the 8 Films to Die for Film Festival. In celebration of the announcement Zmd now has a sleeker more political look in this second one-sheet. Slyly political and horrific in one bite, Zmd will be available to fans across America beginning January 29th, which begs the question when is Horrorfest coming to Canada? The answer to this question requires further debate, but for now check out the latest promo' material for Zombies of Mass Destruction right here.
A synopsis for Zombies of Mass Destruction:
"An idyllic island town is under attack the that most invasive of pests: zombies! Port Gamble is being overrun with braineaters and the people seem powerless to stave them off. But wait, a rag tag band of rebels is trying to turn the tide and push the invading hoards of undead back.

After Dark Films’ 2010 Horrorfest 4 will feature Typecast Pictures’ Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction in its “8 Films to Die For” series. The festival runs for one week in theaters across the United States from January 29nd until February 5th, making it the largest nationwide film festival. So far the lineup is looking pretty good but I’m still baffled at this addition. Kevin Hamedani directed Zmd and co-wrote with Ramon Isao. Janette Armand, Doug Fahl, and Cooper Hopkins star. From the press release: “In Zmd, a conservative island community is under attack! Port Gamble, Washington is being overrun with braineaters, and the people [...]

Just as we suspected upon first learning that Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction had been acquired by After Dark Films, it was confirmed today that the "political zombedy" is the fifth film scheduled for Horrorfest 4, After Dark's one-week nationwide film festival (aka 8 Films to Die For) that's running from January 29nd to February 4th in 2010.
