David Nevins has a new role at ViacomCBS. The longtime Showtime chief will now oversee scripted originals for streaming service Paramount+.
Nevins will keep his Showtime title but will step down from his role as chief creative officer at CBS.
Nevins’ new role comes amid a broader reorganization in ViacomCBS’ streaming executive structure, led by the division’s chief executive Tom Ryan. Wednesday’s reorganization was preceded by Julie McNamara’s exit earlier this month as head of originals for Paramount+. Last week, another top digital executive, Christy Tanner, exited as well.
Additionally, Tanya Giles was named to the newly created role of chief programming officer for streaming. The former MTV Entertainment Group executive will be tasked with shepherding ViacomCBS’ entire streaming programming strategy that includes Pluto TV.

Christy Tanner, the executive vice president and general manager of CBS News Digital, is leaving the network, after playing a central role in the expansion of the division’s streaming service Cbsn.
“It’s been eight years since I joined CBS Interactive, five years since I joined CBS News Digital, and … never years since I took some solid time off,” Tanner wrote in a memo to staffers on Thursday.
“The fact is I haven’t wanted to miss a minute of the incredible opportunity it has been to work with you – building Cbsn into the leading streaming news service, transforming CBS News Digital into a powerhouse and establishing news as a pillar of CBS All Access, Paramount+ and Pluto.”
No successor has been named, but her exit comes on the heels of the combination of the news and stations divisions, led by Neeraj Khemlani and Wendy McMahon.

Christy Tanner, one of CBS News’ top streaming executives, is leaving the company after eight years. Tanner announced her exit Thursday morning.
Tanner, who joined CBS News during the advent of the streaming era, is one of the architects of Cbsn, the company’s free streaming news channel. In her role as executive vice president and general manager of CBS News Digital, Tanner oversaw CBS News across all digital platforms, including CBSNews.com.
Tanner is the latest high-ranking female executive to leave ViacomCBS in the last few months. CBS News EVP Kim Godwin, a leading Black news executive, left the network to lead rival ABC News in April. TheWrap also learned that Stefanie Schwartz, the EVP of ViacomCBS Digital Studios; Nathalie Bordes, the SVP of data and insights at CBS Interactive; and Sarah Jeon, the EVP of business development and strategic partnerships at ViacomCBS Digital, have all left the company in recent months.

TV streaming wars have erupted in Hollywood and are wreaking havoc on Madison Avenue. They are even making a splash in places like Gainesville, Ga.
Wesley Lowery recently visited this town in the northeastern portion of the state, part of an effort to create a report for “60 Minutes Plus,” the new streaming-news counterpart to the venerable CBS newsmagazine. Lowery, one of a handful of correspondents hired for the Paramount Plus series, focuses on the plight of health care workers amid the coronavirus pandemic. “A lot of them haven’t had much relief,” notes the journalist, who takes a few minutes to discuss his work even though he has just about 48 hours before his story is slated to go out over the digital ether.
TV counterparts such as Lesley Stahl or Bill Whitaker usually get 12 to 13 minutes to tell their stories. Lowery says he may get as many as 20 to 30. “We are at a time when,...

Exclusive: When streaming news outlet Cbsn hit its goal last year of roughly 1 million streaming starts per day, CBS News Digital EVP and Gm Christy Tanner ordered celebratory cupcakes for the newsroom, decorated with “1M” in frosting.
In 2020, a year marked by Covid-19, a tumultuous election and weeks of uprisings against racism, Cbsn has blown away its 2019 total of 327 million streaming starts. The free, ad-supported service says it has racked up 1 billion as of this week, with a “start” defined as an engagement of any length. Overall viewing time on Cbsn has averaged about one hour.
There won’t be cupcakes — or a physical newsroom to celebrate in — for a while, as CBS News has been a 95% virtual operation since March 13 due to the pandemic. But still, a number is a number, even though (as Tanner readily acknowledges) the kind of third-party measurement that has adjudicated the ratings wars between...

Chicago is the next stop for ViacomCBS’ streaming-news plans.
The media company is today launching a Chicago-focused edition of Cbsn, its streaming-video news operation, marking the ninth local version of the service. ViacomCBS owns Chicago’s Wbbm and the company has been developing a series of locally based streaming-news outlets in markets where it owns stations.
Local news is critical as the nation grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, says Adam Wiener, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Local Digital, in an interview “We need to provide local audiences with 24/7 access,” he says. “We do it on our websites already and with the Cbsn local streams, and we are now doing that with the video product.”

So I wake up after tossing and turning all night over the Coronavirus crisis, tune into CBS News This Morning, and there are hosts Mary Calvi and Chris Wragge standing in the pouring rain, the awning for the CBS Broadcast Center in the background. They are talking about how the building – the New York nerve center for numerous network and local newscasts – is shut again for precautionary reasons. Closed last week after people began testing positive for Covid-19, the building began to reopen with skeleton crews, but now it’s closed again. The local anchors cut to La-based Hermela Aregawi, who quarterbacked the newscast and introduced numerous CBS News This Morning journalists, all standing in the rain, in streets all over New York.

The climate crisis is a frequent visitor to the plot of Hollywood movies, sometimes as a catalyst in disaster pics such as “The Day After Tomorrow,” sometimes as part of an allegory about Mother Earth, as Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky have said is the case in “Mother!” The bombastic depictions of global warming and the havoc it portends have typically been more limited to fiction than documentary, save for the theatrical impact of “An Inconvenient Truth” in 2006.

When it comes to delivering news to young consumers, Evp and General Manager of CBS News Digital Christy Tanner says there’s no need to tailor the way stories are created or distributed — and doing so can be “insulting” to the viewer.
“As far as we’re concerned, a news viewer is a news viewer, and there is really no need to pander to any demographic,” Tanner told TheWrap. “To me, saying that you need to do differently for younger viewers would be akin to saying you need to speak more slowly when you are talking to an older viewer because they might be hard of hearing.”
While the strategy may differ from competitors, such as ABC News, which draws a clear line in the sand between content for digital natives and programming for older viewers, it has so far been effective for the news organization. The company’s 24-hour streaming network,...

As the amount of streaming platforms entering the market multiplies, the risk of consumers getting lost in the rush increases, according to Universal Content Productions and Wilshire Studios president Dawn Olmstead.
At Variety‘s TV Summit, Olmstead spoke on a panel about how streamers are taking over the business and the impacts they are having on content creation. She cited the fact her 71-year-old, not entirely tech savvy father had discovered that he could watch “Ozark” anytime he wanted on Netflix as an example of how things have changed.
“The content for streaming has become broader, it was a little more youth focused, more niche,” she said. “Some of the content has become more four-quadrant, reaching more diverse audiences.”
Olmstead also revealed that actors and creatives are now coming to studios like Ucp with lists of platforms they would like their prospective show to air on.

Continuing its rollout of local direct-to-consumer streaming services, CBS has launched Cbsn Los Angeles.
The company’s television stations and interactive units teamed to ramp up the La effort, which follows the debut last December of Cbsn New York. Plans call for additional launches in other markets where CBS owns stations. The local news services complement other ad-supported CBS offerings like CBS Sports HQ and Et Live. They will ultimately be included as live channels for subscribers to pay streaming service CBS All Access in their respective markets.
As in New York, the La venture features round-the-clock anchored programming, coverage of live breaking news events in the region as well as an extensive library of on-demand local news programming. The daily lineup includes live streams of Kcbs (CBS 2) and Kcal (Kcal 9), regularly scheduled newscasts and additional weekday one-hour newscasts at 7Am and 1Pm produced exclusively for the platform.

Variety co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein sat down with key leaders in the media industry Monday at the Venetian in Las Vegas for Nab to discuss the impact of direct-to-consumer marketing on content and audience engagement.
“I would bucket what we’re looking at at Nab, would be news gathering tools for CBS News, distribution and end monetization,” Christy Tanner, Evp of Cba News Digital, said at the panel co-presented by Accenture. “There’s a third part — a fourth part — that is a real challenge for us in the streaming space, which is the lack of third party measurement. If there’s one area that I would love to see a demonstration, or somebody offer a solution for, it’s third-party measurement of the Ott space.”
Denise Colella, Svp and head of advanced advertising and strategy at NBCUniversal, explained that the company aims to keep its clients on the forefront of advertising technology.

Continuing its direct-to-consumer push, CBS has launched Cbsn New York, the first of several planned services to stream anchored news coverage from its owned stations in major local markets.
CBS Television Stations and CBS Interactive teamed on the new initiative, which follows the entry four years ago of Cbsn, an ad-supported streaming extension of the CBS News brand. Less than two weeks ahead of the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, Hulu is bringing ABC News Live and CBS News’ Cbsn — two made-for-the-internet, 24-hour news channels — to its over-the-top live TV service.
Starting Thursday (Oct. 26), Hulu With Live TV subscribers will be able to tune to three news streaming channels: ABC News Live, Cbsn and Cheddar, the startup news network that joined the lineup this spring. The $40-per-month package also includes traditional cable news nets CNBC, CNN, CNN International, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, and Hln.
For Hulu, ABC News Live and Cbsn — both of which are available to watch for free on other platforms — let it plug in name-brand news programming essentially for no cost. The news orgs will expand their reach by getting in front of Hulu’s skinny-bundle user base, which last month hit 1 million subscribers.
