It’s Day 7 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 80 of the WGA strike.
With temperatures reaching 90 degrees in Century City on Thursday afternoon, Michael Chiklis, Cobra Kai co-creator Josh Heald, Dylan McDermott, Dermot Mulroney and his sister-in-law Michele Mulroney, VP of WGA West, led the picket lines at Fox Studios.
Chiklis, a SAG-AFTRA member since 1988, told Deadline he’s walking the pickets to “support my brethren in a really righteous fight for fair and equitable wages for what we do.”
The Emmy winner most recognized for his role as Vic Mackey in The Shield is asking for cool heads to reunite at the negotiating table to hammer out a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Additionally, he hopes the strike marks a turning point for the industry to be honest about the struggles it faces.

Lauren Ash, who played Dina in NBC‘s breakout hit Superstore believes that the show won’t be gone for long. In fact, she is pretty confident the series will be picked up again and even include the original cast.
“I think that that, for that show, I mean it’ll be of course logistically scheduling-wise an absolute nightmare cluster,” she joked on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast. “I can’t speak for anybody, but I really do think that there is a lot of good, all of us have a lot of goodwill towards that show and each other. And I feel like I could definitely see it happening. I’m putting it out there.”

When Jury Duty executive vp David Bernad approached casting director Susie Farris to find the jurors for his Freevee mockumentary series, he knew exactly how to pitch the project. “He said, ‘It’s what you do best: putting together an ensemble comedy,’ ” recalls Farris of the first phone call with the producer, who added that he wasn’t looking “for names.” But when she asked about the script, the response caught her off guard — there wasn’t one.
That’s because the largely improvised Jury Duty follows an entirely fake civil case in which everyone in the courtroom — the judge, the bailiff, the attorneys, the jurors, the plaintiff and the defendant — are all actors. All but one person, that is: Ronald Gladden, a Los Angeles-based everyman who believed from the beginning of jury selection to the trial’s conclusion that all of it was absolutely real.

As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.

Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.

That American Auto and Superstore share DNA is indisputable: Both are NBC workplace comedies created by Justin Spitzer that take place in the Midwest. It makes sense that Spitzer would also bring some of the same actors from one show to the next, and while some of that crossover is more obvious, eagle-eyed fans were also quick to spot Jon Miyahara, who played Brett on Superstore, in the background of several scenes throughout American Auto. The March 28 episode “Passion Project” may have just confirmed that he’s playing the very same Brett who silently sulked through Cloud 9.

Hackers seem to be getting the upper hand more and more these days and the fictitious Payne Motors on NBC’s “American Auto” is no exception. The new sitcom American Auto follows the story of the Payne Motors company and the struggles its staff find themselves in with a new CEO, Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer). In the show, Jon Barinholtz plays Wesley Payne, grandson of the company founder who believes he should be there and can do whatever he likes.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Barinholtz explained what he likes most about his character.
“The blind confidence of a white privileged man of a certain age who believes that his opinion should be heard on everything and it is something that was interesting to explore with the character for Wesley,” he said. “I think it gets him into situations where, while that seems like a not sympathetic trait, which I don’t think it is, it gets him situations where you do find some form of sympathy and you just see a...

Superstore ended in 2021 after six seasons. Fans were sad to see the series go and certainly believed that the employees of Cloud 9 had more stories to tell. At least one cast member agrees. Jon Barinholtz, the actor who portrayed Marcus White in the series, would be onboard for a Superstore reunion. The beloved NBC show still has fans.
Why was ‘Superstore’ canceled?
In 2020, NBC shocked Superstore fans when it announced that season 6 would be the series’ last. The cancelation came as a big surprise. Superstore had done fairly well for NBC, and fans were still attracted to the show week after week.
While NBC never gave a definitive reason for the cancelation, industry experts are pretty certain America Ferrera’s decision to leave the series greatly impacted when and where it ended. According to Newsweek, Ferrera’s departure signaled to NBC that it was time to wrap things up.

It’s wheels up on Season 2 of the zippy comedy, American Auto, set at fictional car manufacturer Payne Motors, and the staff is anything but idle. The opener picks up after Season 1’s finale landed new CEO Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer) in hot water; she’s gasping for dignity following an ill-fated TV profile that exposed her role in hiding a defect of one of the company’s cars. (Credit: Greg Gayne/NBC) Now that the public knows of the wrongdoing, “it’s about how Katherine and the rest of the group react to the stress of a scandal that just keeps getting worse,” says creator Justin Spitzer. It doesn’t help that Katherine still has no idea how the automotive industry operates, having come from Big Pharma. Thankfully, her previously peeved team — including Cco Sadie (Harriet Dyer), social-media-savvy assistant Dori (X Mayo), and vapid Payne heir Wesley (Jon Barinholtz...

After a first season spent reckoning with the past, with an inconveniently located statue of a dead white colonialist as the jumping-off point, Peacock’s Rutherford Falls is ready to look forward.
As characters like Reagan (Jana Schmieding) and Terry (Michael Greyeyes) start dreaming big for the town in general and for its Minishonka community more specifically, the storylines become defined less by conflict than cooperation, yielding a series that feels sweeter, more relaxed, less bogged down by the gravity of the past — but also one that seems to render its own white-guy co-lead less necessary than ever.
Initially, though, it looks like business as usual. Basically as soon as Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) returns to town in the second season premiere, he seems to fall back into his old habit of making everything about him. “I am a Nathan that knows I...

“American Auto” has been renewed for its second season at NBC.
From “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer, Season 1 of “American Auto” debuted in December 2021. The series is a workplace sitcom set in Detroit, where Payne Motors has just hired Katherine Hastings (Ana Gasteyer), its first female CEO, who found huge success in big pharma but doesn’t know the first thing about cars — not even how to drive them. Katherine and her team of executives must work to adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard.
Harriet Dyer plays Payne’s chief communication officer Sadie, Katherine’s right-hand woman who constantly saves Katherine from herself. She also struggles to fight her feelings for Jack (Tye White), a Payne assembly line worker she had a one night stand with who Katherine suddenly promoted to the corporate office, making him impossible to avoid. NBC has picked up a second season of comedy series American Auto, Deadline has learned. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.

Chicago – Jon Barinholtz keeps on rolling. After having wrapped a six season run on NBC-tv’s “Superstore” portraying Marcus, he landed another role – with the same sitcom creator (Justin Spitzer) and network – as car industry executive Westey Payne in “American Auto,” which premiered last month. And all this as he co-created “Chicago Party Aunt” for Netflix.
As opposed to to “Superstore,” where the focus was on the store level employees, “American Auto” is a workplace comedy that takes place in the executive suite. Ana Gasteyer (“Saturday Night Live”) portrays Katherine, a hard charging just-appointed CEO of Payne Motors. Barinholtz as Wesley Payne is part of the family who owns the company, and they interact with put upon VP Sadie (Harriet Dyer), Dori (X Mayo), Cyrus (Michael Benjamin Washington) and newly promoted Jack (Tye White). The quick-witted sitcom takes place as the company is in transition.

Saturday Night Live alum and all-around scream Ana Gasteyer takes the wheel as the new CEO of a struggling car manufacturer in American Auto, NBC’s new top-of-the-line comedy from exec producer Justin Spitzer (Superstore). One thing slowing down her driven Katherine Hastings: She doesn’t know a driveshaft from a dipstick! Having come to Detroit’s Payne Motors from the world of Big Pharma, “she is probably more dependent on everybody in the workplace than they even know,” says the actress. Her blind spot becomes evident this week when Katherine’s first earnings call with the board fails to rev up her team (Superstore fan favorite Jon Barinholtz and The Daily Show’s hilarious X Mayo play two of them), which has recently been injected with “everyman” input from promoted factory worker Jack. The series gets good mileage out of this vibe of inclusion, adding sharp writing and a dash of corporate America commentary.

After the rush of holiday specials and prestige movies that define December, January entertainment can often feel like a bit of a letdown. That it’s traditionally been a dumping ground for iffy-looking movies and a bit of a dead zone for new TV shows hasn’t helped its reputation.
But release patterns have changed drastically over the past few years (and even more drastically during the pandemic). Even in the worst of years there’s always something worth seeking out, and this doesn’t look like a bad year...

Coming off a five-year run as writer-producer on NBC’s The Office, Justin Spitzer in August 2013 sold another single-camera workplace comedy, American Auto to NBC, with a put pilot commitment. The script did not go to pilot, and Spitzer went on to create Superstore. After he stepped down as Superstore showrunner in summer 2019 to focus on development under his Universal TV overall deal, he took a new stab at American Auto, which was redeveloped and went to pilot — and then to series — at NBC.

Chicago – The funny meter of Netflix went off the scale last week, as the animated series “Chicago Party Aunt” made its debut on September 17th. What began as a Twitter account by comic actor Chris Witaske (who also provides his voice talent) has morphed into the cartoon adventures of Aunt Diane Dumbowski, her nephew Daniel, and an array of familiar Chicago-isms and characters.
The series was created by Witaske, veteran Chicago improv artist Katie Rich and actor/Chicago native Jon Barinholtz (Katie and Jon also character voices). Jon’s brother, prominent comic actor Ike Barinholtz, also serves as executive producer and voice talent. Diane Dumbrowski is voiced by veteran improv star, actress Lauren Ash, and her nephew Daniel is vocally portrayed by Broadway actor Rory O’Malley.
