Korean indie production house, Imtv is developing and will produce a drama series based on the New York Times best-selling novel, “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See.
The story is set largely on the remote Korean island of Jeju, among the community of ‘haenyo,’ women who earn a living by free diving for mollusks, seaweed and other sea life from the depths of the ocean.
Representatives of a rare semi matriarchal society, the women work while the menfolk typically stay at home, though property is passed down along male lines.
Celebrated activist and Nobel Prize-winner Malala recently boarded a documentary project about the haenyo of Jeju that is set up at the A24 U.S. indie studio.
See’s wholly minutely-researched, but fictional, story is an evocative tale of two best friends whose bonds are both strengthened and tested over decades by forces beyond their control. The best-selling...

Mumbai, Nov 23 (Ians) Director Abhishek Kapoor claims Vaani Kapoor is the only actress who has the courage and sensitivity to essay her role in his upcoming film, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.
Vaani stars as Maanvi opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, and the filmmaker shared a glimpse of her look in an Instagram post.
In his caption with the image of Vaani, he quoted American writer Lisa See.
" 'While she is lovely, we need to remember that her face is not what distinguishes her. Her beauty is a reflection of the virtue and talent she keeps inside', Lisa See," wrote Abhsihek.
"The #beautiful @vaanikapoor is the only one who has the courage, sensitivity and fragility to be my #maanvi," he added.
Vaani has three big films coming up. She has just wrapped up Bell Bottom co-starring Akshay Kumar, and will also be seen in "Shamshera" with Ranbir Kapoor, besides Abhishek Kapoor's film.

Thanks to our friends at Pinnacle Films, we have two Snow Flower And The Secret Fan DVDs to give away to our Australian readers. This is a beautiful and elegant film directed by Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club). You can check out my full review. About Snow Flower And The Secret Fan: Inspired by the bestselling novel by Lisa See, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan tells the story of seven-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily, in 19th century China, who had their feet bound at the same age and on the same day, which sealed their fates together as laotongs bound together for eternity. Isolated in their marriages, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, between the folds of a...

From Zhang Yimou to Wayne Wang and Ang Lee, film-makers are playing a key part in reshaping China's relationship with its past
If history could be converted into stock options, China would have plenty to cash in: more than 4,000 years' worth. But the first round of big-budget films since the country's emergence as a 21st-century power have, mostly, taken the narrow view of those four millennia: unfailingly epic and hoarsely patriotic. 2002's Hero set the mould – shockingly, as it was directed by the former dissenter Zhang Yimou. Jet Li's nameless swordsman ultimately decides to abandon the film's central assassination because he realises that the king of Qin's dream to unify the whole of China is more important. It's not hard to detect the Communist party's beatific smile behind that plotline. As the noughties wore on, the martial arts in Yimou's films grew ever more formalised and claustrophobic, closer to...

Young Chinese girls in Hunan province used Nushu, a language that no men could read, to communicate with one another. Now a new film aims to tell us more about it
A decade ago Chinese-American author Lisa See was researching an article on footbinding when she found a reference to Nushu, the world's only "women's writing". Though the origins were murky, the script revealed a culture of women's relationships and sparked the idea for her novel, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, the film of which, co-produced by Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendi Deng, is released tomorrow.
After having their feet bound at around the age of seven, girls in Jiangyong County in Hunan province would live indoors – first in the "women's chamber" of their own homes, and later in the homes of their husband's family. To ease their isolation and offer support in their pain, girls from the same...

Snow Flower & The Secret Fan is released on 04 November 2011 on Blu-ray and DVD. We have 3 copies of the DVD to give away courtesy of Fox Searchlight Pictures.
Inspired by the bestselling novel Snow Flower And The Secret Fan by Lisa See, the film is a timeless portrait of female friendship. In 19th-century China, seven-year-old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong – or “old sames” – bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan.
In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong’s descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection,...

Chicago – Wayne Wang’s “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” is such a stunningly inert film that it’s almost worth seeing to watch a movie with no thrust whatsoever. Probably due to a language barrier, the film features two of the least effective lead performances of the year, which keeps the audience from engaging in the story emotionally and just leaves them wondering how this book became a bestseller.
There are many problems with “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” but the biggest is the assumption that subject matter is enough to sustain viewer interest. You know those manipulative TV movies, often on Lifetime, in which in the true story is so devastating that it feels like the filmmakers thought there was so much power in it that they didn’t need to bother with anything else? Such is the case with “Snow Flower,” which was clearly intended...

So many films these days focus on male/female relationships and romantic fairytale notions of love, but what about the special relationships women have with their best girlfriends? That special bond between friends is explored in this new period drama from director Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club).
Set in both contemporary Shanghai and back in the very traditional 19th century China, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan explores what is means to be a best friend - a sworn sister bound together for life by an ancient tradition.
Not only is this a beautiful story of female relationships, but it is also wrought in tradition and what it means to be a woman living in one of the largest economic power structures in the entire world.

The book club gals are either going to love this movie or hate it. The rest of us will simply utter a big collective “Meh.” “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” is an ever-so-tasteful, watered-down and unnecessarily-improved-upon adaptation of Lisa See’s bestselling 2005 novel of the same name. The novel, a favorite with book club groups, was set in 19th-century China and told the story of two women, Lily and Snow Flower, who, though unrelated, were paired together as “laotong,” or sisters, from childhood on. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, adapted from Lisa See’s 2005 novel, tells parallel stories of lifelong female friendship in 19th century China and modern Shanghai. Early reviewers find that Wayne Wang’s adaptation fails both in comparison to the novel and to his 1993 hit the Joy Luck Club. Three sources (AP, Msm, and Movie Minute) call the film “clumsy”; it seems that Wang’s decision to navigate between rural period China and urban Shanghai comes off a bit like Julie and Julia. The critics wish that they had more of the real thing, rather than the modern rediscovery. Read the early reviews and watch the trailer below. Fox Searchlight opens the film July 15. While critics applaud the director for featuring actors who are relatively ...

Don't call Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan trophy wives. The women, who are married to media mogul Rupert Murdoch and ex-mgm CEO Harry Sloan, respectively, tell Harper's Bazaar about their new roles as Hollywood producers for their first film, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. The Wayne Wang movie, adapted from Lisa See’s elegant and stirring 2005 novel about a lifetime female friendship in 19th century China, stars the Murdoch's Australian chum Hugh Jackman and ingenues Li Bing Bing and Gianna Jun in a two-tiered contemporary/period story. Filmed in metropolis Shanghai as well as rural village Hengdian, the movie is shot partly in Mandarin. Not surprisingly, the North American distributor is Twentieth Century Fox; Searchlight opens the film July 15. Murdoch and Sloan respond to ...

Fox Searchlight's new trailer for Wayne Wang's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is luscious, warm, and emotionally stirring -- kind of like Wang's other opus about familial Chinese legacy, The Joy Luck Club. The new movie reunites him with Ronald Bass, who co-wrote that screenplay and this adaptation of Lisa See's novel. It comes out July 15, but will you be bothered to forsake the summer diet of skanky blockbusters in its honor?...

Sure, there have been plenty of movies about friendship before. (Come to think of it, don't most films touch on that subject in one way or another?)
And there have been movies about friendships that last a lifetime.
But a movie that follows a friendship that spans over centuries?
Sounds like a new spin to us.
And that's exactly what "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," based on Lisa See's hit novel, is about.
The story begins in 19th-century China, when two 7-year-old girls, Snow Flower and Lily, are matched as laotong, or "old sames," and linked for eternity. When their families try to keep them apart, they write to each other in a secret language between the folds of a white silk fan—hence, the name.
In a parallel story in modern Shanghai, their descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to save their own friendship despite demanding careers and love lives.

"Experience an extraordinary friendship that is strong enough to last lifetimes." Fox Searchlight unveiled the official Us trailer on Apple for the domestic release of Wayne Wang's new film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, based on Lisa See's bestselling novel, starring Gianna Jun and Li Bing Bing. Sneak Peek the new poster supporting the upcoming feature "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan", directed by Wayne Wang and produced by Florence Sloan, Wendi Murdoch, and Hugo Shong.
Angela Workman adapted the original screenplay, revised by Ronald Bass and Michael Ray, based on the 2005 novel, "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan"by author Lisa See.
Filmed in China, the cast stars actors Li Bingbing, Jun Ji-hyun and Hugh Jackman,
Setting her book in nineteenth century China, See writes that 'Lily', the narrator, was born in 1823 — "the third year of Emperor Daoguang's reign". The novel begins in 1903, when Lily is 80 years old. During her lifetime, Lily lives through the reigns of the four Chinese emperors, 'Daoguang' (1820–1850), 'Xianfeng' (1850–1861), 'Tongzhi' (1861–1875) and 'Guangxu' (1875–1908).
The film follows Lily's great grandchildren who presumably take a different path than their ancestors.

Director Wayne Wang has never been a director that could be easily pigeonholed. He broke through with a trifecta of critical and arthouse faves with “The Joy Luck Club,” “Smoke” and “Blue In the Face,” but he’s also tackled more mainstream fare (”Maid In Manhattan,” “Last Holiday”) while still taking chances on ambitious independent pics (”The Center of the World”). So it's no surprise that his next effort, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," is another gear change for the director, a detailed period piece based on the novel by Lisa See that explores the relationship between two girls in…...

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.

Up until now, the main thing that most readers might know about Wayne Wang's new movie, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, is that Hugh Jackman has a small appearance performing a song during one scene. The film will start to get a lot more exposure soon, as Fox Searchlight has picked it up for distribution in the States. Wang directed the film from a script by Ron Bass, Angela Workman and Michael Ray, which adapts Lisa See's novel. The story, as THR describes, is a "cross-generational drama [which] explores female friendship through two relationships separated by more than a hundred years." In other words, the tale is right in Wayne Wang's wheelhouse, as he's done really well in the past with films like The Joy Luck Club, before he dove into studio tripe like Maid in Manhattan and Because of Winn-Dixie. We don't yet know when Fox...
