Chris Miller will take the reins of NBC’s venerable “Tonight Show,” stepping in as showrunner as the current one, Jamie Granet-Bederman, takes a step back.
Miller joins the program from “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where he served as one of the executive producers. He has ties to Fallon, having worked for Flower Films, the production company launched by Barrymore and her partner, Nancy Juvonen. Juvonen is Fallon’s wife, and she made some popular appearances on “Tonight” during the pandemic, when the show went into an “at home” production that featured its host and his family hunkering down away from the “Tonight” set at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters.
Granet-Bederman is expected to focus on developing new projects for Fallon, who also has his own production company, Electric Hot Dog, which is one of the backers of the singing series “That’s My Jam.”

Leslie Jones's Olympic Games commentary is always a treat - and the 2022 Winter Games are no exception! However, following alleged pushback from NBC, Jones announced on Monday that she may have to stop her live narration. "i m starting to feel like this should be my last olympics i live tweet," she wrote of the Beijing Games. The comedian has been sharing videos of NBC's coverage - including her predictions of the scores of figure skaters, why she won't go skiing after watching the competitors, and more - since the Games kicked off on Feb. 4.
While announcing her departure from live commentary, Jones was seemingly referring to NBC as she wrote, "I'm tired of fighting the folks who don't want me to do it. They block my videos and they get folks who think they can do it like me. And I'm tired of fighting them. I love the...

CBS News veteran Kim Godwin is expected to become the next president of ABC News, a move that would make her the first Black executive to lead a broadcast-network news division in the U.S.
Godwin has had an offer from Disney’s ABC for several weeks, according to a person familiar with the matter, but only in the last few days did CBS CEO George Cheeks agree to let the executive out of her contract. The decision, this person says, was not an easy one for CBS to make; the company wanted to keep Godwin on board. Godwin was recently given new responsibilities at CBS’ local stations, taking oversight of news operations there in the wake of the dismissal of executives Peter Dunn and David Friend amid a probe of allegations about their behavior.
CBS News declined to comment. ABC News, CBS and Disney could not be reached for immediate comment.

Disney’s search for a new leader for ABC News continues weeks after the company unexpectedly disclosed the former president, James Goldston, would leave the post.
Goldston’s last day came at the end of March and the company has yet to hone in on a candidate to replace him, according to four people familiar with parts of the search process. When ABC News heads like David Westin or Ben Sherwood left in years past, Disney identified a successor. That hasn’t been the case in the current matter.
Disney and ABC News declined to make executives available for comment.
The quest for a news leader comes as ABC News is taking up more space in the company’s overall programming mix. The division has begun to generate more hours for primetime, where live news specials and deep dives into colorful stories have found a broader perch, and as Americans...

The future for GameStop is looking bleaker than ever before.
As has been the case for retail commerce in general this year, Covid-19 has struck a catastrophic blow to business, with those companies that were already struggling to maintain relevance on the high street prior to the pandemic either going under or just barely managing to make ends meet. The latter camp is where GameStop currently resides, and, if recent developments are anything to go by, the situation isn’t about to change anytime soon.
As part of the retailer’s Q2 earnings call with investors earlier this week, CFO Jim Bell addressed the huge wave of store closures that have already occurred over the last 10 months, how they’ve affected business and, perhaps most importantly, what’s going to happen next. Unfortunately, it appears as if job security for potentially hundreds of employees is under threat, as Bell confirms...

The NBC Sports Group said Molly Solomon has been named executive producer and president of NBC Olympics Production as well as executive producer of the Golf Channel.
The Olympics role had long been filled by Jim Bell, who left NBC earlier this month after a nearly three-decade run at the company. He had worked at the Tonight Show during his last year at the company, but his tenure was known chiefly for his work on the Olympics.

“As a broadcast partner at the PGA of America, and now as a colleague at NBC Sports, I’ve had a front-row seat watching Molly skillfully and creatively lead a tremendous Golf Channel production team,” Bevacqua said. “We are excited to put oversight...

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” fans may have noticed that house band The Roots have a lot less to perform at the start of the nightly program now. The NBC late-night show quietly dropped its opening credits a few months ago, squeezing the cold open down to a quick intro from announcer Steve Higgins, a few “hey-hey-hey-hey” bars from The Roots, and then straight into Fallon’s monologue.
The decision to drop the opener is the most notable change made so far on “The Tonight Show” since former “Today” executive producer Jim Bell took over as showrunner in October. Fallon told Variety that the idea for excising the opener was inspired by Netflix’s “skip intro” feature, which allows viewers to bypass a series episode’s opening credits and get straight into the action.

Stephen Colbert looks to have finally got a demo ratings lead over Jimmy Fallon that might survive Nielsen updating.
CBS Late Show host already had claimed its first demo lead over NBC’s Tonight Show star back when season stats through November 11, 2018 showed up. At that time, Colbert averaged 659K viewers in the 18-49 age bracket and Fallon had 657K. (Their demo ratings stood at a dead heat: 0.51 to 0.51).
When Nielsen adjusted those numbers, however, Colbert lost his edge.
Now, Colbert has once again pulled ahead in the key 18-49 age bracket. And, this time, it looks as if his lead will not get adjusted out of existence, being substantial enough – 693K demo viewers to Fallon’s 686K – to be visible in rating points rounding to a hundredth advantage: 0.54 for Late Show to 0.53 for Tonight Show.
That said, Colbert’s advantage is a slight apples-to-orange one. Here is why.
With Colbert airing repeats last week,...

Tiffany Haddish just set the bar perhaps a bit too high for future “Lip Sync Battle” performers. Going up against Jimmy Fallon at his home turf “The Tonight Show” on Thursday, Haddish was sure to save her best for last, securing an easy win in the very informal competition.
Up first, her host Fallon kicked things off with a little “Groove Is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite, complete with a nifty aerial camera-angle trick. Haddish responded with “Afro Puffs” by The Lady of Rage. She rocked rough and stuff, but it wasn’t particularly mind-blowing.
That’s when the props came out and the whole thing heated up.

Jimmy Fallon on Monday night added an unconventional twist to his “Tonight Show.” He came out from behind his usual on-screen roost — his desk — to interview actress Juliette Lewis while perched next to her on the seats normally reserved for guests.
“That’s the way things happen here on ‘The Tonight Show,’” Fallon told the actress. “No rules.”
Even so, the NBC late-night mainstay is expected to soon have a new person helping to set, and maybe break, some of “Tonight’s” rhythms.
Negotiations have begun to bring Jim Bell, the veteran NBC News and NBC Sports executive, on board to help run “Tonight,” according to people familiar with the matter.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon producer Mike Dicenzo announced this morning that he was leaving the program. His last day was today, which marked his 10th year anniversary working in NBC late-night with host Jimmy Fallon, first on Late Night and then on The Tonight Show.
Today was Dicenzo’s final taping, and The Tonight Show staff crew made sure it would be a memorable one for the departing producer who took to Twitter to share the experience. His last Tonight Show episode featured The Roots’ Questlove shouting “Deetch” (Dicenzo’s nickname) during the opening credits, one of Dicenzo’s favorite recurring Tonight Show segments, Wheel of Musical Impressions, with guest Melissa Villaseñor, and a cameo in the final credits as his alter ego, Mets Bucket Hat...

One of the three top producers of NBC’s “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” announced Monday he would step down from his role at the show, giving rise to speculation about whether someone else might be named to help lead the program in days ahead.
Mike Dicenzo, a writer and producer who has worked with host Jimmy Fallon for a decade, said via Twitter that he would leave the program, “one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made, and one I’ve been grappling with this year. Ultimately, I just felt it was time,” he said. “And thankfully, Jimmy couldn’t have been more supportive or understanding.” Dicenzo has been a longtime creative aide-de-camp to Fallon, helping devise some of his best-known late-night sketches, including one that aired earlier this year in a post-Super Bowl broadcast that featured Fallon doing a lampoon of Bob Dylan singing lyrics that described America under the Trump administration.

Exclusive: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is undergoing a major behind-the-scenes change. Producer Mike Dicenzo is leaving NBC’s late-night program. He just confirmed his departure on Twitter. I hear former Today executive producer Jim Bell is in talks to come in as new Tonight Show showrunner.
Dicenzo was part of a producing team of three The Tonight Show/Late Night Jimmy Fallon veterans who were elevated to lead the show in 2016 following the departure of producer-showrunner Josh Lieb.
Dicenzo and Gerard Bradford, who penned Slow Jam The News Featuring President Obama among other signature Tonight Show bits, assumed oversight of the show creative, while Hockmeyer assumed oversight of production. All three had been with Fallon since before the 2009 launch of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, transitioning with him to The Tonight Show. I hear that Bradford and Hockmeyer, both valued members of Fallon’s team, are expected to stay on.

As the Winter Olympics returns to the network this Thursday, less than a week after NBC’s Super Bowl Lii telecast, the Peacock network is experiencing a February to remember. The last time the same network aired both events was CBS in 1992 — obviously, the TV landscape has changed a lot since then.
Even as viewership declines for such major live events in the face of so much competition, and broadcast TV struggles to maintain relevancy, NBC will come out of February with a healthy ratings boost from the Super Bowl and Olympics. As a matter of fact, NBC is guaranteed a season-long ratings win this year among adults 18-49 and total viewers thanks to both events, in addition to the network’s NFL football coverage and hit series like “This Is Us” and “The Voice.”

While many gym selfies are meant to be motivating and inspirational, Leslie Jones recently came completely clean in hers about feeling discouraged about her body image.
In a photo posted to Instagram by the 50-year-old Saturday Night Live actress on Tuesday, she admitted that sometimes her workout efforts feel like they’re a waste of time.
“Ok back to cardio. But confession I feel like I’m doing it for nothing,” she revealed. “I know it not I’m healthy and look good but I really feel like ‘what’s it all for’ if the people you want to notice don’t.

NBC knew its day of Matt Lauer reckoning was coming. It just didn’t think it would end like this: Abrupt and in disgrace.
Lauer was in the middle of a two-year contract extension, signed last November, that kept him at the helm of “Today” through November 2018 at around $20 million a year. But Lauer’s tenure at “Today” frequently seemed precariously close to ending, as NBC groomed countless potential replacements while extending his contract.
Now, Lauer is the second morning-show anchor, following “CBS This Morning” host Charlie Rose, to be fired in recent weeks following reports and accusations of sexual harassment.
The departures could upend the tight morning-show race, particularly the competition for first place between “Today” and ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The daypart makes as much as $1 billion annually, and “Today,” as the demo leader, takes the largest slice of that cash pie.
