Imtiaz Ali, who redefined romance in Bollywood, had announced his divorce with wife Preety last year, after being married to her for more than decade. Though speculations were on the rise that a certain Pakistani actress Iman Ali was responsible for this, Imtiaz never went on record to talk about his personal life. And now, ironically, the estranged couple is coming together for a film which will be a love story. Based on the lines of the epic romance of Laila and Majnu, we hear that Imtiaz Ali will be seen actively participating in the process of the making of the film. Though Preety remained tightlipped about the details of the cast and crew, she maintained that Imtiaz indeed will be involved with the film and will be the creative director of the same. It is also being said, Imtiaz's brother Sajid Ali will be directing the same. Talking about the love story,...

This week the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor flew to Bangkok to shoot an ad for a Pakistani product...only to return to Mumbai to rumours that she has been replaced by Deepika Padukone in Karan Johar's Shuddhi. "All rubbish," says a close friend of Kareena's. "Karan Johar and she are like siblings. Neither would do anything to hurt the other. Kareena is still very much part of Shuddhi. Pataa nahin yeh kiski buddhi hai. The film has been delayed for Hrithik's health reasons. But Kareena and Hrithik are all set to start the film in July." The ad in Bangkok for a cell phone brand was shot with hotshot Pakistani director Farooq Mannan, regarded as the Imtiaz Ali of Pakistani's ad world. Says Kareena's friend, "She hadn't heard of Farooq Mannan...none of us had. Then she saw his last ad for the same cell phone company featuring Iman Ali...

Kill List (18)
(Ben Wheatley, 2011, UK) Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, Michael Smiley, Emma Fryer. 95 mins
Who knew there was a missing link between Mike Leigh, Andy McNab and The Wicker Man? That's how unpredictable this macabre and outlandish tale is, but it unfolds in a credible modern-day Britain scarred by foreign wars and domestic recession. Circumstances lead a blokey hitman and his partner to accept a dodgy new assignment – and by the time they start asking questions, it's too late.
Attenberg (18)
(Athina Rachel Tsangari, 2010, Gre) Ariane Labed, Vangelis Mourikis, Evangelina Randou. 97 mins
Fans of Dogtooth will be ready for another prime dose of Greek oddness. Beneath the animal impersonations, silly walks and bad sex lies an intelligent, intimate study of human behaviour.
Fright Night (15)
(Craig Gillespie, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant. 106 mins
A teen vampire horror remake that benefits from superior effects, a shrewd Las Vegas setting, and some lively comedy.

Back in 2007 a British-Pakistani friend strongly recommended the film Khuda Ke Liye, which she watched with us. Having never seen a Lollywood film before, I recall being impressed with the production values, acting, music and concept. Now years on with the export of so many great Pakistani singers to Bollywood (Adnan Sami, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam) it was only natural to be watching a film where I’d seen the director’s first film and in which singer Atif Aslam makes his acting debut.
Bol (Speak up) is the second film written and directed by Shoaib Mansoor and has done extremely well in Pakistan. Like his first film, this is also a social commentary, which looks to reflect a slice of society, as well as challenge it.

“You cannot really reprehend mediocrity, you can only regret it. But you can and must condemn the gifted filmmaker who has it in him to combine artistic integrity with a consciousness of dual responsibility to the viewing public and to the man who backs him but who yet keeps postponing the great film ….and yet compromise just this little , just this once” –Satyajit Ray
Stating the obvious, not many Pakistani films get to be exhibited on silver screens in India. Stating the even more obvious, these are bad times for local cinema in Pakistan. The annual output of films made in Pakistan has dropped from 59 films produced in 2001 to a mere 14 in the previous year. And it’s no secret that not many of these films are trailblazers. The sporadic exhibition of lackluster films has made us (west side of the Wagha divide) effectively numb and apathetic when it comes...

Mahesh Bhatt has always been a frontrunner when it comes to importing talent from Pakistan. From actors to musicians to singers, Bhatt has always utilised talent from across the border in his movies. The latest is, popular Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed, who was cast in a significant role in Jashnn, is making a movie - an Indo-Pak collaborative effort - with Bhatt playing a noteworthy role in this endeavour, handling the creative aspect of the film. The film, titled Balaa, will borrow talents from India and Pakistan and will produced by Shahzad Naseeb and Sameena Humayun Saeed. Shagufta Rafique, who has penned a number of films for the Bhatts, will script and direct Balaa, which will star Humayun Saeed in the lead, while "talks are on with Pakistani actors Iman Ali [Khuda Kay Liye] and Juggun Kazim [who hosts talk shows on Pakistani television]," Humayun informs me. CHENNAI, India -- "In the Name of God" ("Khuda Kay Liye") is the first Pakistani film to be released in India since 1965, when war between the neighbors led to a ban on exchange of cinema. With 100 prints in India, compared to 20 across the border, the movie is part of a new agreement to show each other's films, a step that may revive the theater business in Pakistan, where Lahore was the center of sub-continental cinema before it shifted to Bombay post 1947.
The movie tells us that Islam is progressive, but the interpretation of its teachings are often twisted by fundamentalists. It has a lengthy scene where the only Indian actor in it, Naseeruddin Shah, playing an enlightened Moulana Wali, exposes myths about Islam. Not exactly festival material, it attracted good crowds in Pakistan, and decent audiences in the first few days in India.
Set in the U.S., Britain and Pakistan, the plot follows two musician-brothers. One is brainwashed into extremism; the other becomes a victim of this post 9/11 hysteria. Sarmad (Fawad Khan) drops music and marries Mary/Maryam (Iman Ali), a London-bred Pakistani girl, against her will on the radical instruction of Moulana Tahiri (Rasheed Naz). Liberal Mansoor (Shaan) is tortured as a suspect in the U.S., where he is learning music, while his new American bride, Janie Austin Marie Sayre), is left holding placards of plea.
Despite poor production values, too many artistic liberties and stilted acting that point to debuting director Shoaib Mansoor's weaknesses, the film may touch the heart. Meanwhile, some tunes are bound to haunt you long after the curtain comes down.
