South by Southwest is heading to London.
The event, which bills itself as “the world’s leading festival celebrating the convergence of creativity, culture and technology,” is expanding with SXSW London in June 2025.
The move gives SXSW, which was founded in 1987 in Austin, a presence in Europe. SXSW previously expanded into the Asia Pacific region, with SXSW Sydney, in 2023. Organizers said each of these events will feature “their own distinct flavor,” making SXSW “an indispensable three-stop tour for the global creative community.”
“As a lifelong fan of SXSW, I truly believe that it’s more than an event — it’s a movement, a platform where the world’s greatest minds, musicians and motivators come to share their passion and their vision of the future,” said Randel Bryan, managing director of SXSW London. “SXSW London will build on Austin’s incredible legacy, presenting an event that underpins why SXSW is the...

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is saying no to a version of the Msg Sphere. On Monday, the mayor rejected plans to bring a version of the entertainment venue to Olympic Park over concerns of light pollution, the high electric cost, and the impact on nearby heritage sites.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has shot down plans for a local venue identical to Las Vegas’ new Msg Sphere, The Standard reports.
After Madison Square Garden Entertainment opened the doors to their $2.3 billion sphere in September, the company was keen on making Stratford, London the next location for one of its ultra-futuristic, high-tech domes. But Khan rejected the proposal, reportedly citing the potential light pollution, whopping electricity bills, and threat to local historical sites.
“London is open to investment from around the world and Sadiq wants to see more world-class, ambitious, innovative entertainment venues in our city,” a representative told The Standard. “But as part of looking at the planning application for the Msg Sphere, the Mayor has seen independent evidence that shows the current proposals would result in an unacceptable negative impact on local residents.”

Dame Joan Collins has issued a complain to Sadiq Khan after being almost knocked down by a cyclist.
The Dynasty actor, 89, was getting out of a taxi in Covent Garden when she says she was “crashed into” by a “masked cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement”.
The incident prompted her to post an Instagram message to Mayor of London to “do something” about cyclists who ‘consider themselves above the law”.
“Getting out of a #blackcab on the way to @rules_restaurant, we discovered #maidenlane was closed to all traffic,” she wrote on Thursday (23 February).
“However, that didn’t stop a masked #cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement from crashing into me, almost knocking me over. How much longer must we live with closed roads and cyclists who consider themselves above the law?
She continued: “Why don’t you do something @mayorofldn @sadiq before this...

Jeremy Clarkson has claimed that James May has been influenced by “lefties” as he criticised his The Grand Tour co-host’s support of 20mph speed limits.
Last week, May voiced his support for proposed plans to make 20mph the default speed on new or redesigned urban streets, as well as in residential areas.
Appearing on the Today programme on Radio 4, May said that he “hates to say I’m very right-on”, adding that he “would agree that a blanket 20mph would probably be a little bit knuckle-headed, but in a lot of urban places, city centre, towns and villages, actually 20mph makes perfect sense”.
Writing in his column in The Sun, Clarkson hit out at the comments from “m’colleague” May, suggesting that the former Top Gear host was now backing “leftie” plans.

Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial newspaper column about Meghan Markle has become the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s most complained about article.
The column, which was published in The Sun on Friday 17 December, had received more than 17,500 complaints by 9am on Tuesday the following week.
“We will follow our usual processes to examine the complaints we have received,” an Ipso spokesperson told the Pa news agency.
“This will take longer than usual because of the volume of complaints.”
The article was removed from The Sun’s website at Clarkson’s request following the backlash, a spokesperson for the publication said.
The spokesperson added that the number of complaints would be subject to change.
The number also surpassed the total number of complaints the media regulator received in 2021, which was 14,355.

Jeremy Clarkson has issued a statement following his inflammatory comments about Meghan Markle in a column for tabloid The Sun.
On Monday, the “Clarkson’s Farm” presenter shared a statement on social media, saying he is “horrified to have caused so much hurt.”
“Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it,” Clarkson tweeted. “In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”
In Clarkson’s Dec. 16 column, titled “One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B*ks,” the former “Top Gear” presenter wrote of Markle: “I hate her. Not like I hate [Scottish National Party leader] Nicola Sturgeon or [British serial killer] Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.

Taylor Swift’s partner Joe Alwyn has been listed as a co-writer on a new track from her forthcoming album Midnights.
“Sweet Nothing” will be released on Friday 21 October along with the highly anticipated album.
Alwyn, an actor who recently starred in BBC drama Conversations with Friends, has been dating Swift for over five years.
He has previously appeared on writing credits for songs from Folklore and Evermore, but under the pseudonym of William Bowery.
On the new track, only Swift and Bowery appear as writers, unlike the majority of the album tracks that include several songwriter co-credits.
Across the album, Swift’s long term friend Zoe Kravitz is listed as a writer, as well as Lana Del Rey, who features on “Snow on the Beach”.
However Swift appears alone on credits of “Vigilante S***” which she apparently wrote by herself.
Earlier this week, the singer confirmed a forthcoming appearance...

Prince William and his father King Charles III greeted mourners in a surprise appearance. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/Alpr/AdMedia
The royal family is showing their steely determination and pragmatism (most likely learned from the Queen herself) this week, as they’ve all put aside their own grief to greet mourners on several walkabouts, hold vigils at the Queen’s coffin, walk in a procession, and speak to dignitaries.
The new Prince of Wales and King Charles III made a surprise visit to South Bank near Lambeth Bridge in London today as they greeted mourners who were waiting in line for a chance to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II.
Her body is currently Lying-In-State at Westminster Hall and will be moved to Westminster Abbey in a formal procession on Monday for her funeral service.

Charles III has officially been proclaimed the King of the United Kingdom and fourteen Commonwealth realms during a meeting of the Accession Council in London on Saturday morning. It is the first time in history the ceremony has ever been televised.
U.K. networks including BBC, ITV and Sky broadcast the ceremony live at 10Am local time as did U.S. networks including NBC, where Savannah Guthrie was anchoring for an early morning special of the “Today Show.”
Broadcasting the Accession Council ceremony is significant and, according to historian Vernon Bogdnaor “a sign of the times that the monarchy has to adapt to a more open and less deferential society,” as he told BBC News.
When Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne in 1952 there was not even a discussion that the ceremony should be televised while a debate then ensued over broadcasting her coronation the following year. In the event,...

London, Sep 10 (Ians) The England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) has expressed its desire to hold Indian Premier League (Ipl) games in the country in the future as the lucrative domestic T20 tournament looks to expand, said a report in mirror.co.uk quoting the Telegraph.
New Ecb chair Richard Thompson has drawn comparison with the NBA and NFL, who play some of their games in the UK, and hoped that England could stage Ipl matches in the future as well, with the cricket’s governing body in the country hoping to double attendances from two million to four million.
“The NBA and NFL come here, so why can’t we host the Ipl? The Ipl has grown its window by another three weeks and I don’t think it cannibalises other competitions because (many England) players are playing in it anyway,” Thompson was quoted as saying in the report.

Some 16 cities across the U.K. have thrown their hat in the ring to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, which can’t be held in Ukraine due to security concerns.
After weeks of discussions, it was revealed on Monday that the U.K. would host the event on behalf of the war-torn nation — and the idea has evidently landed well with cities all around the country. Not even six hours since the news broke, the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), which organizes the contest, said in a statement that 16 cities plan to bid.
“Bidding is expected to be competitive, with several mayors, councillors and MPs already informally expressing an intention to bid, including representatives from: Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Wolverhampton,” said the Ebu.

Update: The first main event of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations concluded shortly after 1pm local time in London today. Eyes were on the iconic balcony at Buckingham Palace where the monarch made her first appearance at about 12:30pm on a beautiful day one might call fit for a queen. She has rarely been seen in public of late owing to health problems in the past year. From her vantage point, she inspected the troops with the Duke of Kent as the Trooping the Colour neared its conclusion.
At just before 1pm local, the queen was joined by her family including Prince Charles, Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge and their three children, as well as several other royals. The queen’s grandson Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, were in attendance but not seen as they watched the Trooping the Colour from the Major General’s office.

The parody by “The Simpsons” of British singer Morrissey wasn’t received well by Morrissey, or at least those close to him.
In a Facebook message on Morrissey’s official page signed by his manager Peter Katsis, “The Simpsons” was called out for “expounding on vicious rumors” regarding Morrissey, who has been criticized for comments in recent years on race. He has referred to Chinese people as a “subspecies” and mocked London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accent.
“Sadly, The Simpson’s show started out creating great insight into the modern cultural experience, but has since degenerated to trying to capitalize on cheap controversy and expounding on vicious rumors. Poking fun at subjects is one thing. Other shows like SNL still do a great job at finding ways to inspire great satire,” the post said. “But when a show stoops so low to use harshly hateful tactics like showing the Morrissey...

While “The Simpsons”’ parody of a “depressed British singer from the 1980s” — clearly styled at least partially on erstwhile Smiths frontman Morrissey — has gotten rave reviews in many quarters, the man himself is apparently less than thrilled. The singer was satirized as an imaginary friend of Lisa Simpson’s named Quilloughby, from a fictional band called the Snuffs, who, like Morrissey, was a vegan with a quiff a glum outlook.
The character was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch; the episode was titled “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” in reference to the group’s 1986 single, and it features many references to the singer (an Oscar Wilde poster) and the Smiths’ album artwork.
Morrissey has made multiple questionable comments about race over the course of his career, particularly in recent years, in which he has supported a right-wing British political group, called Chinese people a “subspecies” and mocked London mayor Sadiq Khan’s accent.

Reactions are incoming from friends and colleagues about Helen McCrory, the “Harry Potter” and “Peaky Blinders” actress who died on Friday from cancer at the age of 52.
Steven Knight, creator of “Peaky Blinders,” released a statement: “Helen was one of the great actors of her generation. She was so powerful and controlled and this is so sad.” McCrory played Aunt Polly on the series, which announced this year that would it be ending with Season 6.
“Peaky Blinders” star Cillian Murphy said, “I am broken-hearted to lose such a dear friend. Helen was a beautiful, caring, funny, compassionate human being. She was also a gifted actor — fearless and magnificent. She elevated and made humane every scene, every character she played. It was a privilege to have worked with this brilliant woman, to have shared so many laughs over the years. I will dearly miss my pal. My love and thoughts are with Damian and her family.

When the clock strikes midnight tonight, we finally get to say goodbye to the horrible year that was 2020. Well, anyone who can stay up that late, which can be a bit of a challenge for those of us with little kids.
A word of advice for new or adventurous (or drunk) parents who were planning on waking their children up just before midnight local time to join them in a countdown, toast and a kiss — don’t. We’ve tried — and failed at — that.
TheWrap’s got a better idea: party like — and with — the Brits. They may not have a giant ball, and the typical Thames fireworks spectacular has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but London Mayor Sadiq Khan promised a “unique broadcast” as Dec. 31 gives way to Jan. 1.
The replacement special is intended “to remember 2020 and look forward to 2021,” according to the government’s website.

The fund will support arts venues including independent cinemas.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched a £2.3m emergency fund to support culture and creative industries, including independent cinemas, at risk due to the impact of coronavirus.
Of the total amount, £150,000 goes to the British Film Institute (BFI) to help up to 25 independent cinemas in London.
The London Assembly says the money is for organisations most at risk of falling into administration and unable to benefit from government schemes.
It is financially supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable foundation of billionaire former New York mayor and former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg.

Attendees of south London screening say Vue ban after Birmingham brawl was ‘ridiculous’
“Sadiq Khan and Boris Johnson need to go watch this,” says Tyrone Harriett, a youth worker from south London, of Blue Story, the film which sparked controversy this week after Vue and Showcase Cinemas pulled it following a mass brawl in Birmingham.
The move led to accusations of “institutional racism”, “negative bias” and “a systematic and targeted attack”.

The President had some jolly ranchers, but also some lemon sours in the early part of Saturday’s tweetstorm.
A new deal that will open up more of the European market to beef exporters was touted by the Commander-in-Tweet via a tweet from Sen. John Hoeven.(R-nd). No longer will the continent have to ask, “Where’s the beef?”
On a less friendly note, President Trump noted a mean girl tweet from Katie Hopkins on London’s micro-mayor, Sadiq Khan. “The nipple-height Mayor of Londonistan has Never been so unpopular. He has Minus approval ratings because we are stab-city. ” As with ratings and presidential polls, approval ratings are never far from the Trump mind.
Finally, the President found time to tweak China’s tail, reminding them that countries are lining up for deals that would avoid tariffs. “No help from Fed,” was the lone down note there.
We’ll update as more rolls in.

In one corner, we have President Donald Trump, coming into the ring at 6’3 inches. On the opposing side of the squared circle we have ABC news anchor George Stephanopoulos, who measures 5’5 inches in height. Obviously, there’s a bit of a vertical difference.
The President subtly pointing that out during his interview with Stephanopoulos led to a free flow of outrage today on social media, stemming from the President referring to Stephanopoulous as “a little wise guy” during his testy ABC news interview.
The social media world seemed more bothered by the height issue raised than the substance of the conversation. Perhaps the pent-up animosity dates back to early June and Trump’s height snipe at London mayor Sadiq Khan, whom the President said via Twitter reminded him of New York City mayor Bill De Blasio, “only half his height.” Khan claims to be 5’6 inches, with De Blasio a robust 6’5 inches.

An hour after apparently tweet-quoting Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on the “incredible success” of his U.K. trip, President Donald Trump was back to castigating the media – or, rather, “the totally Corrupt Media” – for not giving him credit for the “Best Ever!” economy.
This morning, Trump, who will commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day with other world leaders today and tomorrow, was agitated about his reported poll numbers. “If the totally Corrupt Media was less corrupt, I would be up by 15 points in the polls based on our tremendous success with the economy, maybe Best Ever! If the Corrupt Media was actually fair, I would be up by 25 points. Nevertheless, despite the Fake News, we’re doing great!”

Donald Trump and Melania are finally greeting Queen Elizabeth in the UK ... and the pomp and circumstance is quite the show. The Prez and First Lady arrived at Buckingham Palace Monday for lunch with the Queen and several other royals, including Prince Charles and Camilla. Donald Trump has landed in the UK for his official state visit and in addition to slamming the Mayor of London, he has renewed his attacks on CNN and owner At&T.
Trump seemingly took aim at the news network, after making it to London and landing at Winfield House, the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in Regent’s Park. Unfortunately for Trump, Fox News stopped broadcasting in the UK in August 2017.
“Just arrived in the United Kingdom. The only problem is that @CNN is the primary source of news available from the U.S. After watching it for a short while, I turned it off. All negative & so much Fake News, very bad for U.S. Big ratings drop. Why doesn’t owner @Att do something?,” he tweeted.
“I believe that if people stoped [sic] using or subscribing to @Att, they would be forced to make big changes at @CNN, which...

YouTube is putting its money where its mouth is in a bid to combat gang violence in the U.K.
The company has created a £600,000 grant in collaboration with London mayor Sadiq Khan -- or roughly $760,000 -- to tackle a rise in knife crime in recent months that experts believe is partly associated with the glamorization of gang violence on YouTube and other social platforms, according to Metro. Funds will be predominantly allocated to Catch22 and Redthread -- charity organizations that help young people harness social media for good.
"We have seen violence increase in London and across the country and I have been concerned about the number of videos online that glamorize gang violence and inflame tensions," Khan, who recently launched a social media campaign dubbed #LondonNeedsYouAlive, said in a statement. "[YouTube's] investment … plays a key role in the long-term public health approach I am leading in London.”
