- His school's director, Naz Bokhari, was the first Muslim headteacher at a UK secondary school. He studied maths and science at A-level, with plans to become a dentist. He became interested in law because of a teacher who told him "you're always arguing", and the TV series "LA Law". He studied law at the University of North London.
- He was one of eight children. His parents were Pakistani immigrants, a bus driver and a seamstress, living on a southwest London housing estate.

- [observation, 2016] The problem of the last eight years is Londoners have been given the impression that the job of the mayor is to cut ribbons, walk the red carpet and tell a few jokes. I can do all that, by the way, as well. But actually, mayors can do a huge amount. They can use the pulpit do city hall to bring people together.
- [after the attacks on him by Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr.] I'm a reluctant participant in this dialogue with Donald Trump, because I'm trying to be a full-time mayor doing my job, and I'm not sure what he and his son have against me, and why they are tweeting about me. We're not schoolchildren.
