Don’t get on Nicki Minaj’s case for showing up late to American Idol‘s Top 10 performance night. Let’s be honest: If you had known you were going to have to endure her fellow judges heaping praise (with a side dish of almost imperceptible criticism) on Curtis Finch Jr.’s dreary, off-key Fantasia cover, you’d have tuned in 10 minutes past the hour yourself.
Okay, okay…maybe we should throw a little shade at Nicki. I mean, how many millions of dollars is she paid for working three hours per week at The House That Kelly Clarkson Built?...

Never judge a book by its cover. And never judge an American Idol judge by a pre-taped, carefully edited episode. That message was made troublingly clear by the shenanigans that occurred during Season 12′s first live telecast — featuring the Top 10 women squaring off for (presumably, but hopefully not) only five spots in the finale.
Keith thought pretty much everybody — even the excruciating Tenna Torres — was just great. Nicki Minaj lowered the bar by treating contestants as if they were on the menu at KFC, drooling over their breasts and legs. And Randy Jackson pronounced vibrtao as if it rhymed with frittata,...

Cue your local locust swarm and saddle up the proverbial four horses, American Idol fans: The end times are definitely nigh!
How else to explain Zoanette Johnson being named by the show’s rebooted judges’ panel as one of the 10 most promising unsigned female singers in the country? Yes, Zoanette Johnson, the same chick whose tattered, Season 12 audition cover of “The Star Spangled Banner” caused Keith Urban to literally fall out of his chair — and was punctuated by an alarming booty drop.

If you think Nigel Lythgoe has an easy job, consider this: Despite producing the No. 2 show of the 2011-2012 TV season in terms of total viewers and the coveted 18-49 demo, American Idol‘s executive producer is still in the unenviable position of defending the show’s ratings and creative direction in the face of public criticism from his own boss.
We caught up with Lythgoe prior to Idol‘s Season 11 finale to get his thoughts on how the season had played out, why female contestants can’t win seem to take home the top prize, what he thinks of his high-profile singing-show competitors,...

Dungeoness crab Jimmy Iovine brought a much-needed reality check to last night’s American Idol with his frank and succinct few-second reviews of season 11′s Top 24 contestants. He should probably just step in and have a seat as a fourth judge!
Anyway, one comment he made about 15-year-old Eben Franckewitz stood out to me. Eben, you’ll remember, is the floppy-haired cherub who tried to set fire to a beloved Adele song on Tuesday’s Top 13 Guys performance night, but then it rained. Giant drops of reality poured down from the top of the Idoldome in thunderous spurts of “oh no you didn’t!

After 33 million plus votes were cast this week, the first live two hour results show of the season came upon us and half of the contestants met their end of the American Idol journey. Results were satisfactory for the most part. But that doesn’t mean the results weren’t a bit shocking. While Hollywood Week is the toughest part of the competition for the contestants, the first live results show is the toughest par of the competition for the viewers.
Producer, Jimmy Iovine made his first (pre-recorded) appearance of the season with his criticisms before each elimination. His comments could not have been anymore on point for Chase Likens, Phil Phillips, and Jeremy Rosado who were the first contestants to find out their fate. Dear America,
You don't know me, but I'm the guy who's been sitting on his couch for several hours each week for nearly 10 years yelling things like, "Are you effing kidding me?," "Seriously, that guy/girl?" and "Oh, come on, how is it possible that we're even watching the same show?"
I did it because, like you, I was entranced by "American Idol" and the drama of watching potential stars climb their way to the top each week. I held on because I knew the payoff would be that triumphant final night when the confetti falls, Lionel Richie (or Kiss, or some other act your mom loves) sings a duet with a finalist and we get to hear that awful coronation song...

Let's quickly clarify how this is going to work: America has voted through five girls and five guys. Six contestants will be asked to sing again, and from those six, the judges will choose three.
Got it? On to the finalists!
We're focusing on the guys first. Chase Likens, Jeremy Rosado and Phillip Phillips are called to center stage.
Except instead of telling us which of them is going on and which of them is going home, we get commentary from Jimmy Iovine. Who sounds like he's hocking "As Seen On TV" products. He wants to sign Phillip immediately. Smart man, Jimmy.
Jeremy's the first to be eliminated. Chase is also Not sticking around. Phillip Phillips is our first guy to the Top 10. And my 15 year old self squealed a little in excitement.
Now it's the girl's turn. Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Hallie Day, and Brielle Von Hugel join Ryan on the floor.

America voted for five girls and five guys, and the judges each got a wildcard pick on the first “American Idol” results show of the season. That means there are 13 singers moving forward as finalists.

Some days, it’s depressingly easy to take the cynical approach to recapping American Idol: Like when Randy makes a “doo-doo” joke, or Steven bats over .500 in using “beautiful” to describe the night’s performances, or J.Lo serves her patented “intense/meaningful” facial expression with all the practiced ridiculousness of a RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant.
But after Wednesday night’s installment of Idol — during which the Season 11 Top 12 women took the stage — an altogether different kind of emotion is the order of the day: Earnest excitement.

One night after the guys got their chance to shine (with varying degrees of success) on "American Idol," it was time for the girls to step beneath the spotlight on Wednesday's two-hour telecast. And while some seized the moment, well, even more seemed to wilt under the pressure.
And sure, you could blame it on nerves, but with so much on the line — only five were guaranteed to make it through to the next round — let's just say there's going to be plenty of girls sweating it out during Thursday's (March 1) results show. Not even Adele could save them. Who delivered the goods? Here's our grades for the girls ... the good, the bad and the,...

Welcome back to American Idol! Last night the men delivered a round of mostly lackluster performances, but as you know, girls just want to have fun (and sing Adele, probably), so I had high hopes for tonight. Ryan Seacrest kicks things off doing a little cheer because Scotty McCreery is contractually obligated to return to the show in a few weeks. He then introduces the judges: Jennifer Lopez! Randy Jackson! The "controversial" Steven Tyler, who seems mostly asleep until someone mentions a girl in a short skirt. He's like a pervy dormouse.

Top 12 Girls: American Idol Recap
I think my own personal feelings about American Idol at this point can be summed up in two words: cautiously optimistic. While the girls had a couple more train wrecks than the guys, they also had a few more standout performances. Again, I'll address song choice and judging at the end, so here are the grades for performance and relevance, as well as a few side notes about attire.
Chelsea Sorrell "Cowboy Casanova" I have no issues with contestants singing songs from former contestants. However, it rarely works, because people tend to go for the big hits, the familiar favorites, and usually suffer in comparison. (More on this later.) Chelsea felt a little behind the whole time, and not quite comfortable on stage. Relevance: B+ Performance: C+
Erika Van Pelt "What About Love" I love that Erika chose not to belt out this performance, but...

After a decidedly lackluster night with the Top 13 male vocalists, it was the girls' turn to take the "American Idol" stage. While things started out wobbly for a number of singers, by the latter half of the show, we'd had three powerhouse performances that easily blew the guys out of the water. I think critics say this every year, but I truly believe that a number of these women have the talent to break the four-year streak of young, white, male winners -- we'll have to see whether America agrees.
Chelsea Sorrell: "Cowboy Casanova"
Of all the Carrie Underwood songs to tackle (and it's always a risky choice on the show that discovered her), Chelsea picked one of the least flattering for her voice. The speedy, mid-tempo rhythm had her rushing through her phrasing, and because she was concentrating so hard on nailing the lyrics and staying in time,...

Wednesday night was the girls night to shine on American Idol as their first live performances of the season took place. A half hour into the two hour broadcast, judge, Randy Jackson admitted that the judges gave “some passes in judgement” when the boys performed on Tuesday night. So the judges got their act together and took their roles as judges just a bit more seriously this time around. The night started off just as strong as boys’ night but it wasn’t until Hallie Day made her way to the stage that this became a broadcast worth watching. If Day doesn’t make it to the top 13, we mine as well turn the voting over to Vote for the Worst. But let’s get to those before Day for a moment…
Country music jump started the night as Chelsea Sorrell graced the stage with her best Carrie Underwood performance.

Tonight the Top 12 girls take the American Idol stage for their first taste at live performance.
And speaking of that stage- again - I had a thought today: Isn't this stage only used, typically, during the semifinalist rounds, which usually last much longer than this year's? Are we going to be seeing this stage again? Or did producers sink a ton of money into renovating this stage for one week of performances? Why do I even care?
These are the things I ponder while driving, y'all. Anyway, let's get to it. The girls have Contestant Cams and we've got songs to hear.
Chelsea Sorrell's up first. I'm from the south, but Chelsea? Chelsea's Southern. So Southern I can barely understand her. She tackles Carrie Underwood's "Cowboy Casanova." When you do a song by an Idol, the same rule applies regarding performing a current hit: you best do it better than the original.

Is it just us, or are your expectations higher for the women than the men at this stage of "American Idol"? We just feel like there are so many good females, while we not only didn't feel that way about the guys last night, but we also feel like several of the good ones kind of whiffed. Just us?

No female has won since 2007, but the ladies proved on Wednesday that it may be their year to take back the crown.

It was ladies' night on "American Idol" Wednesday (February 29), and if the performances of the Top 12 females are any indication, it could be the ladies' season as well.
Indeed, Tuesday's shaky performances from the guys may have had fans worried about this year's installment of "Idol." But several ladies turned in big, show-stealing songs on Wednesday that restored faith to the season at hand. And while no female has won "Idol" since Jordin Sparks took the crown back in 2007, this could be the year a woman puts an end to that dry spell.
Fittingly, this potential female domination comes at a time when the biggest force in pop music is Adele, and the chart-topping diva's presence loomed large over Wednesday's show.

American Idol voting results have always been kept top secret by producers until the winner is revealed under a rain of confetti in May. That leaves Idol fans scrambling for way to assess how their favorite is doing from week to week.
Ever since Idol allowed contestants to have individual Twitter and Facebook accounts, fans have been keeping a week-to-week record of how the contestants stack up against each other. Of course, Twitter and Facebook followers are not a foolproof way to assess who is winning the Idol game, but it can offer some interesting information.
So who’s winning now?...

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - American Idol has narrowed down their contestants to 24 hopefuls, and in a surprising twist, host Ryan Seacrest revealed that too many contestants were cut, so the Fox singing competition will be adding one more spot to the semifinalist lineup. Jermaine Jones, Johnny Keyser, Richie Law, and David Leather will be vying for the coveted spot on next week's episode. And now, an almost verbatim transcript of what went down on Thursday night’s “final judgment” episode of American Idol:
Randy: So listen dude, you came in with a really strong audition, and we thought you could go all the way, but then in Hollywood Week you had your ups and downs.
J.Lo: Sweetie, this is really difficult, because you had some great moments, but your Vegas solo was not your best performance.

Last night, the top 24 "American Idol" semifinalists were chosen. While cameras have followed contestants like Shannon Magrane and Heejun Han from their initial auditions, Thursday marked the first time audiences saw Hollie Cavanagh and heard her impressive pop voice.Hollie auditioned last season and just missed making the Top 24. This season, she's had the least camera-time of any of the semifinalists -- none of her musical performances from the previous audition rounds have been shown, which is pretty unusual. What makes Hollie's lack of screen-time even more unusual is that the judges agreed she could win the whole thing last season if she came back this year. Watch this clip from last year's show (jump to 2:43):While there's been no explanation for Hollie's lack of camera time (calls to "Idol" were not returned), she will probably still fare well. Remember, Season 7 winner Kris Allen flew under the radar until the live shows.

American Idol’s overlord gargoyle Nigel Lythgoe has cooked up quite the season 11 twist: A 13th guy will join the top 24 on Tuesday’s live show. In the running (clockwise from left): operatic gentle-giant mama’s boy Jermaine Jones, awful cowboy Richie Law, wee Michael Jackson impersonator David Leathers Jr., and hot-tub denizen and former J. Lo paramour Johnny Keyser.
What’s bizarre (other than Idol’s insistence on a “mugshot chic” presentation of the four contestants) is that Johnny Keyser didn’t even make it past the group round in Vegas. His dismissal itself was odd — until then,...

The judges announced there will be 13 guys in the top 25 this season on 'American Idol.' Do You think the last spot should be given to Johnny Keyser? After four of the longest hours of American Idol in the history of the show, we finally discovered our top 24 contestants for season 11, but there was a catch! On Thursday, after approximately 4,256 hours of auditions, callbacks, comparisons, falsettos and fainting spells (not to mention the occasional bit of nudity and some stuff on a battleship), "American Idol" finally whittled the masses of dreamers down to the Top 24.
It was a ride, to say the very least, but at long last, we know the names and faces of the folks who will battle it out to become the heir to Scotty McCreery's crown. Of course, keeping track of all the hopefuls can get rather difficult (especially since so many of them are country singers), which is why we've once again taken it upon ourselves to break down each of them in handy-dandy bios. Hollie Cavanagh has been American Idol’s kept woman of season 11. The 18-year-old first auditioned in Austin last season — anyone else remember the Agonizing Commercial-break Cliffhanger they used to heighten the drama on little Hollie’s near-nervous breakdown and subsequent shot at a second song? It’s one of their favorite tricks! So I was shocked the producers didn’t trot out last year’s footage once the tiny blonde sprite was finally shown tonight. The Voice of Ryan even said “Her Idol journey began in Galveston…”

On "American Idol," we pick things back up with Adam Brock, whom the judges have really been putting through the wringer as he cries and cries and they keep peppering him with questions. After all this, he has to be through right? And then, yes, he is.
Jeremy Rosado is next and frankly, we've never been in love with him. We think he could get cut and that'd be Ok. But then, his final performance is pretty great. Hmm. That's a tough one. It makes J.Lo bounce up and down like she's having a fit. At his final judging, J.Lo says they watched him "vividly," which .... huh. And then she misuses "transcendental." She means "transcendent," we're pretty sure.
Now we have Shannon Magrane, who sings "The Trouble With Love" for her final performance, which is a great song, and she does really well on it. We'd like to see her make it,...

This week on American Idol, the semifinalists were chosen! Forty two contestants were cut to the top twenty four which made for some very painful eliminations yet still one of the most talented top twenty four of the series. The judges came face to face with each remaining contestant individually to give the good and bad news, with explanations in tow. While the cuts were deep and disappointing, for the most part, the eliminations made complete sense. As of yet, there were no cuts that left us speechless… but we’ll have to wait until the rest of the top twenty four is revealed tonight for that to remain true.
Setting the bar high for her fellow competitors, Elise Testone made it to the top twenty four and is definitely a force to be reckoned with. She’s the one to beat. Jen Hirsch, who may remind some of Demi Lovato,...

Jennifer Lopez showed her true colors on Wednesday’s “final judgment” episode of American Idol – a shimmeringly hypnotic hue of emerald green, to be exact.
Indeed, the Gigli star’s sequined dress was so shiny, it actually managed to reflect the image of her “deeply concerned” face and cast lustrous jade pools back onto her throat. It also sent me into a daydream that she was some kind of glamorous alien, just moments away from peeling back the rest of her human skin, revealing a V-like visage, and devouring whole the American Idol contestants who failed to crack the Season 11 Top 24. “I’m sorry baby,...

Little surprise -- including the proliferation of fake cliffhanger drama -- was the name of the game for Wednesday's "American Idol" episode, during which 14 of the top 24 semifinalists were revealed. "American Idol" revealed its final 10 semifinalists Thursday (February 23), rounding out the Top 24 that will compete for America's votes during season 11's live episodes, which begin next week.
The remaining 10 contestants were chosen from the pool of 42 sent to Las Vegas to compete for the chance to perform on the live shows. The first 14, including Heejun Han (Heejun Han!), were unveiled during Wednesday's episode.
Thursday's show picked up with the cliffhanger from Wednesday, regarding the fate of 27-year-old Adam Brock. The teary-eyed Brock made it, of course; "American Idol" can be cruel (see last week's brutal "Gotcha!" twist), but it's not cruel enough to let a contestant hang in the balance for a full day and then not let him through.

You know what would make American Idol better? Or The Voice? Or X Factor, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, or any reality competition requiring an assessment of talent? If it was acceptable to tell auditioners, "You're very talented, but I'm sorry, you're a loser. Thank you for your time."
Loser. That's a word I need to hear more. Because here's the thing about Idol's eleventh year of pop pageantry and growly Georgia-on-my-Mind-yness: I can't root for contestants who sing well but reek of contrivance, ineptitude, or losery loserness. Pop music is not about operatic supremacy, dammit! It's about flair, self-confidence, nerviness, and maybe not looking like a meek shopper at Forever 21. God! We got to meet some of the top performers for season 11 of 'American Idol' Feb. 22, but will Adam Brock make the cut? Following last week's Las Vegas auditions, Jennifer Lopez, Stephen Tyler and Randy Jackson got down to business and dropped more than half of the nearly 50 singers on the Feb. 22 episode of American Idol. Sitting surrounded by a pond of blue lit water, the judges broke the news to the anxious contestants, sending 14 to the top 24. Another week, another wholly unnecessary, post-audition audition episode of "American Idol," because the judges are apparently unqualified to accurately measure talent until they've heard a contestant sing at least eight times in four different venues. Everything that was revealed in this episode could've been covered in a five minute montage, but the producers have a two-hour timeslot and they're determined to make you sit through every monotonous minute, gosh darn it!
Since I am not nearly as sadistic as the creators of "American Idol," all you really need to know is included in the handy list of survivors and lucky escapees below. I suggest you save your DVR space and just drop in for the last five minutes of the Feb. 23 episode, when the show will roll out its annual "Ridiculous Dancing Montage" that will remind you of the Top 24 in one manageable, filler-free chunk.

We're paring down the list from the 42 people who made it through Vegas to American Idol's Top 24. Tonight, contestants will make the walk to their final judgment. It's like the Idolgeddon.
Before their final auditions and learning their fate, contestants were treated to Le Reve-The Dream, a Cirque du Soleil show, as both a reprieve from competition and a chance to scope out the stage where they'll sing what may be their swan songs. It's one night off before some of their lives will be drastically changed.
They've chosen their numbers, their instruments, their outfits. The contestants are ready. So are the judges. So are we. Let's get to it.
Jen Hirsh is up first. We got to see about 20 seconds of her final audition. Randy said it was "okay" for her. In her sit-down with the judges, Randy says it's about being the best of the best of the best.
