Right from the beginning, Dirt 4 obviously seeks to build on the success of the critically acclaimed Dirt Rally, whilst simultaneously reaching for the more mainstream audience of the previous entries in the series. It’s a much calmer experience than the other numbered entries, and where the art of the traditional rally has lost ground to more and more outlandish interpretations in previous games, it is back with a vengeance this time around.
As a result, Dirt 4 feels a bit odd, but only if you overthink it. The development team have built a game that seeks to unite fans of both the traditional rally games that made them famous (and in 2015, who showed their support through sales of Dirt Rally) and, erm… whoever it was that kept buying the previous entries in the Dirt series.
Whilst Dirt 4 may have lost some of its identity, it remains extremely credible – and enjoyable.

Codemasters and Koch Media have announced that Dirt 4 will hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in June 2017. Hot on the heels of 2016’s critically and commercially successful Dirt Rally, Dirt 4 takes the passion and authenticity of off-road racing to the next level, whilst also reintroducing gamers to white knuckle truck and buggy racing in Landrush.
From the press release:
Dirt 4 will feature a game changing system called Your Stage; an innovative rally route creation tool that allows you to produce a near infinite number of unique stages at the touch of a button. You choose your location and set the route parameters then Your Stage does the hard work to create a unique rally stage that you can race, share with your friends and then challenge them to beat your time. Your Stage allows experienced rally players to create longer, more technical routes, whilst newcomers can create simpler shorter routes as they hone their skills.

When it comes to video games, the rally racing genre is a strange beast. Far more people appear to take part in the digital version of the sport than would ever be caught watching an event live or on TV and this has led to rally games almost being a staple of each new generation.
Codemasters recently brought their take on the sport back to consoles with the universally (and deservedly) acclaimed Dirt Rally, while Milestone carried on their work in the genre after losing the official Wrc licence, releasing the passable but unremarkable Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo. The beneficiaries of Milestone’s loss were French developer Kylotonn Games, who grabbed that official licence and released Wrc 5 last year.
With this year’s attempt – Wrc 6 – they’ve added some improvements to the mix that bring the game closer to the real deal than you’d expect. At times, there’s...

Pining for a current-gen racer in the mould of the classic Wipeout? Then Formula Fusion could be the game for you...
One of the early hits that established the PlayStation as a must-have console, Wipeout was the epitome of 90s cool. With its pounding music, sleek design and breathtakingly fast action, Psygnosis' futuristic racer briefly seemed like something from another planet.
Created by developer R8 Games, Formula Fusion has the same adrenaline buzzing through it, with its anti-gravity racers hurtling along twisty, trendy-looking tracks. While this is an entirely separate game from the Wipeout series, it does have certain elements in common: Cold Storage, who provided music for almost every Wipeout entry, will provide a new soundtrack. The Designers Republic, who were responsible for the Psygnosis games' trendy look, will offer similar duties on Formula Fusion.
The studio itself comprises some industry veterans who've worked on the likes of Grand Theft Auto,...

With GRID2 out now, we chart the development of Codemasters' racing heritage, from BMX Simulator to the present...
Last April, Codemasters announced that it was to abandon other genres in order to focus exclusively on racing games. For those with fond memories of Codemasters' long history, which included budget action adventures like the Dizzy series, quirky management games like Rock Star Ate My Hamster, or maybe the Brian Lara Cricket series, it might have seemed like the end of an era. Yet since its very earliest days, racing games have formed a key part of the British publisher and developer.
From an early age, siblings Richard and David Darling had an interest in computers, and were selling their own games via classified ads in magazines by the early 1980s. Before they founded Codemasters, they were selling games to the UK publisher Mastertronic; the Darlings'...

Forza Horizon has been announced by Microsoft Studios. The spinoff in the racing franchise will be released exclusively on Xbox 360 later this year.
While few details of the project were revealed, a teaser trailer shows cars on open roads as well as scenes of concerts, suggesting elements of a playboy and party lifestyle as well as driving beyond the franchise's usual racing circuits. It will be developed by Playground Games, a UK studio created by former Dirt, Toca and Colin McRae developers, which Forza studio Turn 10 described as a "partner". "At the same time [of Playground Games's founding two years ago] we were looking for a partner to push this vision, gamers to car lovers and car lovers to gamers," said creative (more)...

Sony have announced a new system that will allow you to play your Umd games on your shiny new Ps Vita. Sort of.
They have announced a program called Umd Passport, which will allow you to register your PSP Umd games to your Psn account, then download them to your Ps Vita at a discount price, as can be seen in this handy picture below.
As you can probably see, the process is rather simple.
On your PSP you download the Umd Passport program, once you insert the Umd to the system you are able to register it to your Psn account following the on screen prompts. The game will then be available for purchase at a discount on your Ps Vita.
You will also be able to easily transfer your PSP saves to your Vita. This can be done through your PS3 or PC via the Ps Vita Content Management program,...

Codemasters F1 2011
If you like to drive fast, you’ll love F1 2011 from Codemasters, a credible upgrade to its predecessor, the aptly named F1 2010.
The question I have after spending a night circling track after track in far-flung venues around the world is whether it’s worth the nearly $60 investment or whether you’d be better off playing an F1 arbitrage game and buying last year’s version, which plays pretty well and realistically for a price tag of only...

Dirt 3
After having reviewed two racing games in recent weeks, I was less-than-enthused when Dirt 3 from Codemasters arrived by mail. My mistake.
While you can’t judge a game from its cover, you can tell a lot about user experience within seconds of popping it into your game console. In this case, I had Dirt 3 up and running in single race rally mode, at the easiest level, with all assists on, inside of 90 seconds. There was an opening sequence, but...

Codemasters vice president of development Gavin Cheshire has confirmed that Colin McRae: Dirt 3 is currently in the works. Speaking to Edge magazine, Cheshire revealed that Codemasters' Birmingham studio is contributing to the third instalment in the successful rally series. "There's some great stuff coming from Birmingham that's going into Dirt 3," he said. "Dirt was a complete reboot - we threw away what was going on and redid it completely - and then we rebooted Grid because it wasn't top gun, and then we rebooted Dirt 2." He added: "I'm not saying we're throwing all the codebase away, but we're throwing the thoughts away and coming out with something fresh and (more)...
