Few shows have managed to achieve what Game of Thrones has. Over the years that it was on air, the show built itself a loyal fanbase who felt every emotion the characters felt. Game of Thrones established itself as a cultural phenomenon and gained followers throughout the globe. Not even the countless heartbreaking deaths in the show could turn its audience away.
Game of Thrones (2011-2019)One of the many things that Game of Thrones is known for, whether it’s the TV or the books, is its gruesome and hard-to-watch scenes. One scene that was a bit too much for the audience in particular was the one involving Ramsay Bolton and Sansa Stark on their wedding night in season five. We just unlocked horrible memories, didn’t we? Well, while the scene should have been difficult to film for Sophie Turner, the actress revealed that she actually enjoyed it.

"Game of Thrones" has been off the air for several years now, and the prequel series "House of the Dragon" has taken over the world that author George R.R. Martin created in his novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire." While the controversial finale of "Game of Thrones" soured a lot of fans (including myself) on the show, all you have to do is think about Maisie Williams' portrayal of Arya Stark to remember why we loved it in the first place. Getting to watch a young girl who always knew she didn't want to be like everyone else grow, change, get more powerful, and set off on a massive sea adventure at the end was a wonderful thing, and something I wish there was more of on television.
While there were many things that didn't translate well from the books, Arya's character absolutely did. Perhaps you, like me,...

Richard Madden dazzled audiences as The Young Wolf Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," which made his shocking death during the infamous Red Wedding one of the most earth-shattering moments in the series' history. Madden has been acting since childhood but was an absolute force on the stage, having studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Soon after, he toured with Shakespeare's globe company as Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet," later reprising the role in the West End production in 2016 with his newfound "Game of Thrones" fame. However, as Bryan Cogman, who also served as a story editor on the TV series, discussed in "Inside HBO's Game of Thrones," Madden got the gig for reasons outside of his acting resume.
"At first we just liked Richard because he was the odds-on favorite for 2009's Best-Dressed Man in Scotland Award," said series co-creator D.B. Weiss. "He did indeed win – and in addition to his clothes,...

Across the eight seasons of "Game of Thrones," there are many moments that are infuriating, most of them intentional. These are the acts of violence and injustice done to characters we love that make us connect even more to those particular characters. In season 1, the major instance of this is when the newly minted king Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) orders the beheading of Ned Stark (Sean Bean). It's a moment that changed not just "Game of Thrones" but television drama as a whole forever. What's interesting about the moment, though, is that it was actually an inevitability that we just wanted to tell ourselves wasn't going to happen.
A few episodes before that, in the appropriately titled fifth episode, "The Wolf and the Lion," there was a moment I'd argue was even more infuriating. Ned and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) have a duel, and as the two men are fighting,...

We all know "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to be one of the funniest films of all time. What the film gets less credit for is being remarkably ingenuous in its use of limited resources. They may be regarded as a legendary comedy troupe now, but when they were creating their take on the King Arthur legend, they only a few hundred thousand pounds to work with. Adjusted for inflation, it still wouldn't even be £3 million five decades later. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is a rather expansive film, as each knight of the Round Table has their own storyline that sends them to various places.
So, how were they able to have such a large scope with so little money? Clever framing, specific set decoration, and the beauty of a historical location. The vast majority of "Holy...

Some pretty horrible things happen to people on "Game of Thrones." Characters get beheaded, maimed, burned, castrated, assaulted, blinded, paralyzed, and just generally injured across the show's eight seasons. The world created by George R.R. Martin in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel series is unforgiving, and no one is safe from the pain. Even though so many gruesome things happen, there is a surprising lack of visual evidence from the harms some characters endure. Jaime Lannister has his hand chopped off, but he gets to wear a golden prosthetic in its place. In the books, Tyrion Lannister has his nose sliced off, whereas in the show Peter Dinklage just sports a scar across his face. The Hound's head had been burned, but the burning took place prior to the show's starting point.
There's several reasons for this. Having someone wear a prosthetic or laborious makeup season after...

One of the stranger things about the history of "Game of Thrones" is that two pilots were filmed for the series. General practice in television is that a network will order one episode of a show to see how it turns out. A test subject, if you will. Based on the success of that pilot, they will green light the series or can it. Rarer are the instances of a pilot being shot and not going well, but the network has some faith in the show that they opt to shoot a new pilot for the series. This is what happened with "Star Trek" all the way back in the 1960s, where the original pilot, "The Cage" (which didn't even include Captain Kirk), was shelved and a new pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," was made and aired as the show's third episode.
"Game of Thrones" is another one of these shows.

Top Hollywood writers took to social media to express defiant support for their first union walkout in 15 years and showed their feelings about studios being unwilling to meet their contract demands.
The Writers Guild of America announced the work stoppage will begin Tuesday afternoon. The union also released a list of claimed responses from the studios to their proposals, which helped fire up members.
“The Shield put FX on the map,” wrote FX’s Snowfall writer-producer Sal Calleros. “Mad Men put AMC on the map. House of Cards put Netflix on the map. Writers did that. Not some CEO. Know what you get when you put CEOs in creative lanes? You get Quibi.”

By and large, author George R.R. Martin was extremely happy with the debut season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. The casting process — in which he actively participated — discovered so many ideal unknowns, the show handled some of his iconic moments perfectly (“The death of Ned Stark could not have been done better,” Martin has said), and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss managed to add new layers to certain characters (such as Cersei Lannister, as seen during her chat with Robert Baratheon about their ruined marriage).
There were, however, two scenes in the show’s first season in 2011 that bugged the best-selling author — and both were due to the production trying to make the most epic TV series of all time on a budget that was then considered sizable (6 million per episode), yet far from what was needed to pull off the author’s vision.

HBO is officially franchising its hit fantasy series “Game of Thrones” with the launch of the prequel spinoff series “House of the Dragon,” and fans got their first look at an official teaser trailer on Thursday. “Game of Thrones,” the biggest hit in HBO history, concluded its eight-season run in May 2019, but even before that, HBO had begun developing various potential spinoff possibilities with the aim of greenlighting the one(s) they liked best.
Which brings us to “House of the Dragon,” the first spinoff to officially be ordered to series. The show certainly looks like “Game of Thrones,” but it features all new characters and a different timeline. The world’s most ambitious corporation is making the world’s biggest TV show. Amazon is hard at work on “The Lord of the Rings,” the series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary epic fantasy franchise, which was previously adapted into the equally beloved “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy, as well as many other adaptations. This will be the first time “Lotr” is being made into an ongoing TV series. It’s going to be a big deal. And by “big deal,” we mean “cost over a billion dollars to make.” Amazon paid $250 million for the rights alone, in a deal the attorney who negotiated it called “the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen.”
The show was announced in 2017. The eight-episode first season is in production now, and the second will start shooting soon after. The series is expected to run for five seasons.

If there is a definitive reason for genre fans to maintain their Amazon Prime subscriptions (besides the free 2-day shipping), it’s the company’s long-gestating untitled Lord of the Rings television series. The New Zealand-based production successfully endured a lengthy pandemic-era hiatus to complete its pilot this past fall, and continues work on subsequent episodes. Yet, the recent exit of cast member Tom Budge seems to signal that the purportedly billion-budgeted series is facing creative difficulties.
Budge revealed his departure from the ensemble of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series with an Instagram announcement, which was complemented by a thematically-appropriate vintage Johnny Cash performance of “Ring of Fire.” However, the circumstances over his exit were not exactly pun-worthy.

Ready to journey back to Middle-earth? Amazon's big-budget TV adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, Lord of the Rings, has found its stars. Following Will Poulter's departure from the series, Game of Thrones alum Robert Aramayo has signed on to star alongside a handful of other actors, including Ema Horvath, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, and Sara Zwangobani.

The upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series at Amazon has unveiled the show’s official synopsis.
The epic series is described as follows:
“Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

“Game of Thrones” and “Lord of the Rings” writer-producer Bryan Cogman has struck a multiyear overall deal with Entertainment One, which follows his most recent overall at Amazon Studios.
Under the terms of the agreement, he is set to develop scripted television and new media projects for eOne. First up on his slate is a contemporary series based on Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo,” to be produced by Mark Gordon under the latter’s deal with eOne.
“I’m delighted and honored to call eOne my new home and very excited to work with Michael and his terrific team,” said Cogman. “eOne’s global reach and its dynamic, wide-ranging library of IP make it a truly exciting place to tell stories. And the opportunity to reimagine ‘Yojimbo’ with Mark is nothing less than a dream come true.”

The pair of characters making up popular Game of Thrones romantic couple originally were conceived as brother and sister — and no, we’re not talking about Jaime and Cersei.
Missandei and Grey Worm — played by Nathalie Emmanuel and Jacob Anderson, respectively, on HBO’s juggernaut of a fantasy series — were at one point in the storytelling brother and sister. The revelation is one of many in Entertainment Weekly scribe James Hibberd’s new book on the TV show, Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series.

Exclusive: The classic spaghetti western that helped launch Clint Eastwood’s career looks to be getting the TV treatment as we are hearing Mark Gordon Pictures is developing A Fistful of Dollars as a series. The company has acquired the rights to the 1964 film as well as the Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai epic, Yojimbo, which the Eastwood film was based on. We are also hearing Game of Thrones scribe Bryan Cogman is in talks to adapt the series.
Yojimbo and its shot-for-shot remake A Fistful of Dollars tell the story of a wandering stranger, “the Man With No Name,” who comes to a town riddled with violence and uses wit and skill to trick the town’s competing gangs into destroying each other.
The series will pull from this source material for an original, contemporary retelling of the story.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

The recently vacated lead role on Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series has gone to Game of Thrones actor Robert Aramayo.
While Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings television series seems to be tapping into the momentum of quasi-feudal themes left behind by Game of Thrones, it may have just cemented such a notion with the casting of series alumnus Robert Aramayo for a lead role.

Mere moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual PGA Awards. This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures) are almost always Oscar finalists in Picture. This seems likely to hold true again this year. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

“His Dark Materials” star Morfydd Clark has landed a lead role in Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series.
She joins a cast that includes Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle and Maxim Baldry. Sources say Clark will play young Galadriel, the character famously portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” films. This would mark one of the first major characters from the book or film announced for the show.
Amazon declined to comment. Reps for Mawle did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
The “Lord of the Rings” series is being developed by the writing team of JD Payne and Patrick McKay. Additionally, “Game of Thrones” alum Bryan Cogman has signed on as a consulting producer on the project with J.A. Bayona set to direct multiple episodes. Amazon gave the series a two-season order when it was first announced.

Shortly after HBO released Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, the Golden Globe nominations were unveiled and its considered a surprise that the series was virtually shut out. After the long wait, the truncated final season arrived this year and rather than take a victory lap, it was showered with complaints.
When the series, adapting George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, arrived, people were stunned at its scope, sweep, violence, sensuality, and strong performances. You weren’t sure who to root for as the status quo kept shifting and beloved characters kept dying in unexpected, messy ways.
Phrases and names seeped into public consciousness just as the series began exhausting the extant prose and then charged ahead while Martin struggled to finish the current novel, in the cycle. Series Executive Producers/Writers/Directors David Benioff & D.B. Weiss got direction from Martin and then increasingly veered off in their own direction.

Will Poulter will not be appearing in Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series after all, Variety has learned exclusively.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, scheduling conflicts will prevent the “Bandersnatch” and “Midsommar” actor from joining the show based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Variety had exclusively reported on Poulter’s involvement with the series back in September. The exact nature of the role Poulter was to play remains a mystery, but the search for a replacement is now underway. Other actors reportedly attached to star in the series are Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Maxim Baldry, and Ema Horvath.
